What's the longest time anyone has had a U3S running for?

Chris Wilson 22 August 2017

Just curious as to how long people have had a U3S or other U series
powered up none stop for, and how the reliability has been. I leave
mine powered up 24 hours a day, seven days a week, only a mains power
outage will stop it, was actually thinking of running it on solar but
probably not worth the hassle nor cost effective.

2 years easily.

I have 2 x U2's and a U3 DDS.

Only time they have been off is for the odd firmware upgrade, otherwise they sit their running 24/7 with GPS calibration.

In fact I thought about this only recently when I was up in the roof space (where they live in the dark). and I wondered about having an Uptime counter
on them (mechanical).

Maybe it's an idea for Hans in future U3S updates ?

I switch my U3s off if I am not at home. ?What's the position on unattended operation?
It can run a couple days if I am around at home.

Additionally, how many are running unattended in the UK ?

CB was legalised in the UK when it was mainly because of the persistent demands of the continuing illegal operators despite prosecution (OK they were miffed when they were given FM but that's another story).

I am not sure that tactic would work with UK Amateur Radio Licensing though (so no, I am not advising it).

LOL you can tell who the Windows users are. Better reboot it at least once a fortnight if you don't want to see the BSOD ;)

Luckily the U3S's are running HansOS.

Are you in the UK ? If so, and you read the License Terms you will see it depends on which License you hold and which band you TX on if I recall correctly.

But no flying to the Bahamas for a three month holiday, there's a two hour maximum shutdown clause.

It can run a couple days if I am around at home.
PS, IANAL

I would have to dust off my licence or dl a new version it's been so long. ?Just a question for UK users as without checking I wasn't sure of the current situation. ?
For me with a full UK licence I'm taking no chances until I check and switch off I am not at home. ?
Thought somebody would have known the answer to the question however without sarcasm!

Best not ask that question:-)
It's something much asked. In the UK or in most other countries I think the rules have to be stretched a lot for anyone to feel really comfortable about it. Even at home exactly what is attended operation?
But on the other hand who is going to notice a few 100 Mw in the ham bands when Ofcom allow so many interfering devices?

Hello Alan,

When I say left on, not TX'ing, I usually TX at night after dinner, I
mean sat there with GPS running, I can't afford the electric bill,
anything else aside, running this amp 24 hours! LF power is
expensive, a BS170 doesn't cut it ;)

I switch my U3s off if I am not at home. ?What's the position on

Why ? (You only need read and understand two basic clauses of the UK licence to remain legal, and run your 400w all band , all mode beacon.)

I do wonder if? those asking the questions solder their own PL259's, or get a club member to do it for them ?

Blimey I'll go and look it up. ?What a bunch of time wasters that can't answer a simple question. ?Makes me wonder if they actually know or have a licence even!!

Let's first hit this from a technical angle - the electronics in the 3S should work for a very long time !? Reliability science is statistical - but we can be pretty confident that a properly built unit can work a very long time.? The one key caveat is an appropriate bias for the BS170 - the power output recommended by the designer.? Honestly a few extra mW don't do us much use except in heat, if you understand dB math.? For reference I have mine running at 300 mW on the lowest bands and just under 200 mW on the higher HF bands.? (BTW with reasonable, not huge, antennas - this is enough power to reach half way around the world down to at least 7 MHz - looking forward to seeing if I can reach Asia or VK/ZL on 3.5 MHz this winter with 300 mW and my vertical.?

The legal side -- read your nation's regulations.? I won't say any more here!? If your nation does not permit unattended operation, best to have some off time.? Perhaps rules can be refined someday to permit unattended, mW level operation.? Running higher than necessary ERP would not aid our collective cause.? As I am crossing oceans with 200-300 mW one can wonder when more is needed (although I may boost my output, but not my ERP, on 160m due to my antenna).

enjoy your radiations -- this is all cool stuff

Curt

I can think of a couple of U2s that have been running continually since 2013.
