"Walmart Parking Lots on The Air" - WOTA

Actually, it looks like LOTA is going to happen. Regardless of what you think about any of the "OTA's", if you operate out in public, consider a small sign that says something like: "Ham radio in action. Visitors welcomed!" It should be a great way to make the public more aware of ham radio.

Comments should be made at /g/SoftwareControlledHamRadio and off Hans' site.

Well, it was amusing at first. Walmarts on the air.

But the more I thought about it, the more it became a friendly?
way to bring Amateur Radio to the masses. Yeah, I know, the serious hams
are against it. Because? Well, it isn't serious!

Me, I'm going to be calling "W1FRA with Walmarts on the air"? when I am in one of their
parking lots.?

It's always fun to introduce people to ham radio.

I just read a thread on here regarding a potential "Lakes On The Air" and why not - I actually live steps from a Lake and could activate regularly!

That said I also live about a mile from a Walmart - 10 minutes by bicycle!

As I see it THIS has more advantages (especially for 'mature' operators) there are "washrooms", food, medical supplies and some even have a McDonalds - and What a Promo for Ham-Radio!

And the beauty of this is a lot the pre-work has already been done - every Walmart has a store number!!!

Imagine saying to the XYL - just off to Walmart (need anything?) and returning an hour or so later with 10 Activation's and a carton of milk!?

Activations could be on VHF/UHF and HF and YEAR ROUND - operating from that quiet corner of the parking lot - you know, where the RV's Park!

Probably follow a similar set of guidelines to POTA? (or become an 'honorable non-employee of the Month' and have your pic in the lobby!)

Chris, Personally I think many of us that follow this site are tired of hearing how to wind a toroid or why is my QDX dead or half dead or some other degree of dead.? 98% of what is on this site now has to do with QDX's. Once in a while it's nice to take a break and have a little fun. Like others have already told you, block out what you don't want to hear.? W0DF
