Using a PC Gaming headset with mic for phone SSB operation

Hi All,
?
I'm looking for some guidance please.
?
I'm considering on repurposing a PC Gaming headset with built in mic. Conveniently, the headset has separate 3.5mm jack plugs for the headphones and mic. I'm going to use a foot switch for the PTT.
?
Wiring the PTT foot switch to the QMX+ is, I think, straight forward. The switch is wired between the ring and sleeve terminals of the QMX+ mic/paddle 3.5mm socket.
?
The headset mic is another matter...
?
As I understand it, and please correct me if I'm wrong,? PC's provide mic bias voltage on the ring terminal and the audio from the mic is connected to the tip terminal. That leaves the sleeve which just goes to ground or sleeve to sleeve.
?
On the QMX, the mic connection and mic bias voltage is provided on the tip terminal.
?
Would I be right in thinking, connect the ring and tip of the mic from the headset to the tip of the QMX to make it work?
?
Thank you in advance.

Replying to my own post...

The microphone is plugged into the QMX Paddle port; this stereo 3.5mm jack plug is for both the microphone signal AND the PTT switch.?

  • Ring-to-ground is the microphone connection
  • Tip-to-ground is for PTT (close the connection tip-to-ground to initiate transmiussion)
So, on the QMX, I would need to connect the mic between ring (with bias voltage for the mic) and sleeve.
?
Still not sure if I need to connect ring and tip together on the mic of the headset to connect to the ring terminal of the QMX.

There's a lot of confusion about the PC microphone connector wiring because the first sound cards that used 3.5mm microphone input usually used tip for the audio and the ring for the bias voltage giving you a choice of whether you wanted the bias or not.
?
These days, most devices seem to just use the tip for both bias and microphone - since most microphones elements prefer that approach.
?
Unfortunately there's no agreement about whether the tip and ring need to be connected together in case you plug the microphone into an old style sound card.
?
You'll need to measure with an ohmmeter between tip and ring to find out, and I suggest always checking this out yourself to be sure.
?
Hope this helps.

Hi Mario,
?
That's good to know. Will look into it.

Thanks for posting.

All of my old gaming headset adapters short the tip and ring, putting input mic audio on both.? So I can't use them for qmx.

This is the circuit I use for my Heil microphone, this just has a TS connector, no ring.

Hey Chris,
?
That is exactly what I'm thinking.? I think, that should work nicely.?
?
Thanks for posting the diagram.
?
Cheers.
