the next time someone asks when SSB firmware will be ready

My bet is Hans would LOVE to make a big announcement at FDIM, as with the introduction of the QMX+ last year. And adding SSB a year after introduction would indeed be a coup.Hi Todd, are you saying that we will have to wait until mid May? LOL, see below: Speaker Listing for FDIM 2025 Thursday MAY 15 2025 In no certain order ... Hans Summers G0UPL - "Bringing SSB to QMX" ... Giuseppe Marullo IW2JWW - JN45RQ |

Hi Todd, are you saying that we will have to wait until mid May?Yup, I knew he was speaking at FDIM, so that's why I suggested that. It would have a certain poetic resonance with last year's release, and May is NOT FAR OFF. And there is the title of that talk, which could be given before the firmware's release, but would have a bit more relevance afterward. I offered that speculation purely in jest. I know absolutely nothing. Except that Hans has strong (and hard-learned) boundaries on offering release dates. Boundaries are good for mental health. I very much commend Hans for practicing this important component of self-care. |
Hi,
?
I have worked SSBat about 2 watts and astonished the other hams I was talking to while they were running hundreds of watts (evil grin). It is about picking the right band at the right time of day and that changes according the whims of the propagation faeries. And maybe they are influenced a little by sunspots.
?
The QRPLabs radio I want to see is the QSX. I am already past my expiration date like the oldest carton of milk in the dairy cooler. I hope Hans does not wait too long.

Bill,
?
What will the QSX do that the QMX could not?
The new approach to SSB transmission may well prove superior to what was planned for the QSX.
There are a few enhancements to the QMX that I might like to see
but the first few versions of the QSX would have things to change as well.

On the plus side, a SSB radio limited to 5w is still going to have limited appeal (and utility). Maybe the SSB-enabled QMX will be the basis of a new radio with a bigger RF output. Would he have to change the name to QRO-Labs? :-) (If I was his only customer, he'd have to change it to QRS-Labs...) ?

as unlike the launch of a new product which results in a flurry of orders then a trickle of kits as he ships them, there are a lot of QMX / QMX+ already out there waiting for the firmware update to be released?

If someone wasn't going to post that, I was going to.

My previous comments in this thread have generally been shown inaccurate (except the unprovable and unserious FDIM prediction). However, I'll hazard another wild guess:
I don't think there are enough QMX owners out there to crash the qrp-labs webhost. AND... I wonder if even half of QMX owners will update the firmware the very day it is released. For sure there'll be a lot of excited people when SSB is released. But "a lot" as a proportion of QMX owners is still... not many! (Also, the firmware file is not huge; Bittorrent really shines with large downloads.) On the other hand, I think a new market will open for customers who use SSB primarily and want a tidy and economical package for S/POTA. The building/fulfillment crews in Turkey might experience a mid-year Christmas rush! I guess my sincere hope and wish is that Hans will profit enough to make all the support hassles worthwhile AND to give him some breathing space for whatever his next project will be. Because you know he has ideas cooking. And the group gathered on this forum seems to enjoy the way he thinks! Also, we know he already has a wishlist of other firmware features. |

It feels worse than it is with reading 31 messages on one central theme. I may never finish this topic! Or, the next message Hans may announce he has SSB finished and tested, even for unexpected radios to transmit or to receive it. I think I'll go to the last message and work back---Foul thought; that last message is this one!
