#qmx SSB Firmware beta 1_01_009 release #qmx

Hi all

I updated the?SSB?beta?testing webpage of the brave, here:??and released?firmware?version?1_01_009 to it.?

Changes in this version:
  1. More small USB tweaks directed at Win7 to try and get the Serial COM port working again.
  2. Bug fix: USB gain not loaded at power-up.
  3. Bug fix: Sync calibration screens display issue (wrote over top of previous cals without clearing them first).
  4. Calibration quit and set error vector to zero when the phase error cannot be properly measured.
Note that every QMX+ I have tried, has completed SSB calibration successfully using Run all. On some QMX some bands cannot calibrate phase error properly; what happens now is that (per change #4 above) the phase errors are written to zero which is equivalent?to?switching off phase predistortion for that band. At least the other bands can use phase predistortion and the sync optimization etc will also be correct; I will work?on trying to find a solution to these less usual cases.?

Many thanks for your feedback so far. Hopefully if I can resolve Ludwig's Windows 7 issues we could be getting close to an official SSB firmware version.

Hi,
?
Does Calibration work from the menu?
How do you calibrate for a single band of choice?
Can you stop calibration? Like if you see a problem, (without crashing and having to reinstall firmware and reset? )
Have you tested menu calibration??

Also why is the power output 3 watts on CW on 20, and? 1.2 watts on CESSB Two Tone???

Hi George

Does Calibration work from the menu?

Yes, calibration works both from the menu on the terminal and on the LCD on the decixe if no computer is attached.?

How do you calibrate for a single band of choice?

In the terminal you press +/- to go to the band and calibration tyow you want (phase, USB sync, LSB sync). Then press the 'O' key to run one single calibration. On the QMX itself use the Tune rotary encoder to go to the calibration you want then press the Tune button to run that one alone. This information is also on the SSB beta page.?

Can you stop calibration? Like if you see a problem, (without crashing and having to reinstall firmware and reset? )

On the terminal menu, Ctrl-Q exits the calibration screen, consistent with the way other screens are excited.?

On the QMX LCD, the right button (a.k.a. Exit button) exits the calibration. Which is also consistent with how to exit everything else, exit a sub menu, exit menu editing or whatever, on both QCX and QMX-series transceivers.?

Have you tested menu calibration??

Yes, in both terminal menu and QMX LCD menu.?

George,
?
for CW, during a dit or dah, you have a constant envelope. This is related to your power output. For SSB the envelope is not constant. If the peak envelope power (PEP) is equal to the CW power, the mean value you will be less. Calculating for a two tone signal it should be 50% (-3dB).

TNX Hans and Ludwig !? Appreciate the help.
I will try again.?

Hello Don

I loaded .009 on my 20-10 QMX this morning and decided to do a calibration to see if there were and changes.?
I now get and error ¡° Phase Calibration not possible¡±. This is something new. I didn¡¯t see it on earlier releases. This only appears on 20 meters. All other bands calibrate fine.
?
What would cause this and is it a problem that needs to be repaired?

I mentioned this in reply to an earlier thread. See here:

In summary with the current methodology, phase error measurement isn't always possible. I haven't seen this failure on a QMX+ but it has been reported by others too on a QMX. When the calibration can't he done, the phase error is set to zero, to avoid making anything worse. Don't forget the performance is already very good even without the phase pre-distortion. Of course I'll try to find ways to improve the calibration so it works in these cases too. But for now setting it to zero is a good interim solution.?

I was having issues with the calibration of my QMX high band on 10m with 1_01_007. ?However, with 1_01_009, all bands calibrate up fine. ?
?
Thanks for the update Hans

Installed 1_01_009 on my QMX 60 - 15 m version.. All good so far, done calibrations including USB IMD sync on all bands , and LSB for 40 m.? Would there be any point in running LSB IMD sync for other bands as I will not use LSB for other bands than 40?

No point, you're right. You can do the sync cal but if you don't use LSB except on 40m then the sync cal results won't be used.?

Hi,
I read the Calibration section again. I may have missed it. In calibration is the Mic supposed to be connected? I ask because my Mic may be causing some issues, and I don't trust it.

I was nervous, but ran the full SSB calibration from a terminal after installing version 1_01_009, and I was surprised to find it finished without blowing the BS170s this time. Everything seems to be working well. I'm getting about 4.3 to 2.2 watts depending on the band. I'm assuming everything is okay, is there somewhere I can look to see if all is well? I would nice nice if it slapped me on the back and said, 'good job Joel!' but I would settle for a big green light or something:-)

Many thanks for this version Hans,
?
Unfortunately, this time one of my BS170s blew during the calibration cycle of my QMX+. I used the R command to do the batch. Only one blew, but unfortunately I didn't think to do the fingertip temperature test before clipping them out one by one and checking the current draw after each one. I thought of doing it when there were two left, so it saved me from replacing one of the BS170s as only one was hot!
?
Does anyone have a handle on why calibration seems to injure the PAs? I can't imagine that it generates more thermal stress than an afternoon of digital mode operation. Little voltage stress too as the SWR is low while calibrating into a dummy load. Why should only one go short? Tolerances in breakdown voltage?
?
I found a little bug. It's great to have access to the diagnostic screen from the front panel; I used it to test my replaced PA. Unfortunately, each time you change the band up in frequency, the audio volume increases! The volume control seems to retain its AF gain function while being used to change band.
?
Please keep up the good work! I'm having great fun watching my QMX+ develop and I'm looking forward to using it when I go to Cyprus in a couple of weeks.
