QMX issues

Brand new, worked perfectly in the shack on Monday. Took it to a local park with a freshly charged 9 B Bioenno battery (it's a 9v build).?

  1. No audio out
  2. No sidetone
  3. A bunch of letter "T" across the lower of screen, and as I tune, more of the letter "T" show on the lower screen
  4. cannot change band from default startup. ?

After three factory resets, finally got audio out But no side tone.?

Factory reset again, and audio is gone. ?

Antenna is a resonant ?fed halfway and is confirmed as SWR 1.2 to 1. ?

After 10th factory reset, I see a message "initializing Si5351" and everything ?is back to normal. ?

I create CW message but can't get it to repeat even though I have Repeat set to 8 and interval set to 3. ?It only plays the message once.?

Is there something funky going on, or operator error?

Hi Mark

I cannot comment on your other issues, but the T's are normal, just the CW decoder trying to make sense of random noise.

Possible RF issues? Everything always works great within the RF choked and optimized space of my shack, it's always outdoors with a temporary antenna and ground (or no good ground) that I start seeing random issues, even with just a few watts. I like to bring a small dummy load along (for example, Hans' inexpensive little kit!) and if I have no problems with it, I've narrowed the issue down to my antenna setup. By "fed halfway," do you mean a dipole or something else? I tend to have the most RF issues with end-fed half-wave or random antennas, even with counterbalances so a couple of inline chokes always come along for the ride.

Thanks for the help.?

Sorry for not being clear, I am using a par and fed 20 m and fed halfway antenna with an inline ?RF choke. I shall experiment later this evening from my home QTH where I have a resident 40 m dipole.?

Mark, a freshly charged "9V" Bioenno battery will have an output voltage significantly higher than 9V.?
From the Bioenno manual, its nominal voltage is 9V, but its charge voltage is 11.1V.? After some amount of running discharge time, which decreases the 'full charge' value to the steady state value, quoting from the manual, "The battery outputs a steady voltage around 9.6V until very little capacity remain".
?
So you were likely running your QMX at significantly higher than the recommended voltage for a 9V build.? If you run FT8 at this voltage level, it may result in damage to your finals.? CW and SSB may survive, but there is risk.? You should put a simple silicon diode in series in your data cable to drop the voltage by about 0.6V to be safe.
?
I am not surprised that you had some problems; I'm not sure why a bunch of Factory Resets fixed it.

Well alrighty then!? I had NO IDEA that the voltages were that way, Stan.? I'll never understand why 9V is actually 11.1V and 12V is actually 13.8V LOL.? Thanks much.

Of all their batteries I found all of the "9V" were when full charged were
11.1Volts, not much surprize as there are no combination of LFE or Lion
that hits 9V they are all 11+ Volts or the next increment down 8.4 or 7.2V.
?
Likely as the voltage drained off it settled some closer to your target.

Test at home with that antenna no another!

Probably because the op fiddled long enough to draw the voltage down to an acceptable value.
?
Y-O-Y did Han's waste so much time putting multiple LARGE PRINT, red font, voltage warnings in the manuals?? ;)

12V and a bit more is no problem for a 9V QMX except the PA. So if you operate from 11.xV without transmitting there will be no problem. And there will be nothing like written in the first post.
?
No sidetone could be a result from protection because of a (short) high SWR. Factory reset will reset the protection status but every time and not only after some resets.
?
But what should cause "No audio out"? The audio is switched off in some parts of the menu. But you should see this if watching the display. And I don't know why it should be off in normal RX status and "repaired" by a factory reset. (Ok, if you lower the volume to zero it will be at default after a Factory reset, but default after the first Factory reset.)
?
All this looks to me more like a wiggly contact. After pressing buttons sometimes it's ok and sometimes not.
