QDX: Sometimes only getting RX after PTT

Hi all,

First off: I Love the QDX. I'm going to do a video review soon. But before I do, I want to know if anyone else experiences this issue: When switching bands, I get spurious input on the waterfall until I PTT. See the screenshot:

In this screenshot, I was on 40 meter JS8, and switched to 20 meters. You can see the vertical lines. Those went away after clicking "tune" just to trigger PTT for a moment. Any thoughts on what might be causing this??

Thanks!

I was also able to replicate the behavior on WSJT-X when switching bands. It's intermittent though.?

Ditto - same here. Using WSJT-X.

I got this when switching from FT8 to WSPR. The fix was simple enough - either change bands and then return to band of choice, or do the same with a mode change.

Hi,

yes I saw it many times after switching band when testing the finished QDX. I used the "CAT command test" in terminal mode. I happened to be listening to the audio and watch it on a spectrogram/waterfall. It was an awful loud pulsating sound - I thought that the LO synthesizer was running berserk. The problem disappeared as soon as I sent another FA...; command.

You just saved me so much time, thank you!! I'm also experiencing this, only on 20m.? It happens all the time for me so I thought I hadn't soldered C29 or L12 correctly.? I was about to start troubleshooting the circuit but it sounds like a firmware issue.

By the way, I'm so happy with this thing.? Today was my first time on FT8 and I'm hooked.? Made contacts in 3 countries in the matter of minutes.??

I also see some strange behavior sometimes - only way to get it work again - is to go to the audio setting on the wsjt-x - do not need to do anything - just press ok - and it works again.

Sometimes it stops totally - then I go to the radio tab - and pressing Test CAT - all works again.

Tested using different USB cables etc etc but no differences.?

And I do not have this problem when using my Icom radio - and there is no RFI in my shack - and a good and stable 12V supply.?

But - the radio works great - except for this??

?

73 - Knut?

?

That sounds like a Windows issue. I still have to change the audio setting on my taskbar every time i change from WSJT-X to listen to a video.?

Well - I use a new M1 iMac , but I do not have any problems using any of my other radios from the same iMac -
Same cables etc - so I do not think its a PC issue

73 - Knut??

Quick question, has anyone tried a quick "Tune" command in WSJT-X to see if that resets the CAT link?? From the limited information that I read here, it sounds like a "critical path" problem that I ran into MANY times in industrial control systems where the reset signal was dropped in the exchange.

Just curiosity on my part.

I should have been more specific. I PTT by using Tune. So yes that resets it.

Thank you Ryan for the response.? Based on that information, the command to drop the PTT line is being missed by the QDX.? This could be a software issue on the QDX side that it cannot decode the message fast enough or that there is noise causing the issue.??I have not started building the QDX, so do not have a transceiver to test.? Is it possible that you have the PTT set to VOX in the WSJT-X software?? I have reports from other builders that you need to set the WSJT-X Radio and Audio settings exactly as set by Hans in the manual.

Hi Evan,

CAT and other options are all set exactly as the manual states. :)?

Today I have used it for about 8 hours
Stopped working 2 times?
First time - this vertical bars you can see in an image 2-3 messages over.?
After pressing "Test Cat" - all was ok again.
The next time - I did not get any replies on my CQ's - and checked pskreporter - and yes - no TX.
This time nothing worked to soft reset , so I had to pull the power to do a hard reset.
Then all was back ok and working.

BUT - after another 30 minutes I find that I have no TX output.? 0.1W varying to 0.3W on all bands , and about 0.44A steddy from 12V
The output starts at 0.1W and works up to about 0.3W after 10 seconds ?? - but the current is stabile.?
Measuring the voltages for the pin diode switching on the filters - and all normal as indicated in the manual.
The same about 27dBm on C34 as on the antenna connector - so the filter switching is working.
So then I just changed the PA transistors - as I was thinking 1 or 2 ded ones , but no difference .
The working voltage for the PA's are 12V so nothing wrong with L14

But the voltage regulator for +5V are getting somewhat warm on TX mode - not in RX mode.
So what could then be common for all bands ?? C34? C2? , but I have about same RF level on both sides of them measured using a probe.??
And 27dBm ~ 0.5W on C34 - so I have to little out from the PA's.
I have to stop for tonight , but will continue tomorrow?
