QDX Initial Testing

Am stuck from the git-go. QDX assembled and given final visual and continuity checks.

>Initial setup with OHR WM-2 wattmeter + dummy load
>Acer laptop running Windows 11
>Device Manager shows
??? Silicon Labs UART Bridge to COM3 (for IC-7200)
??? USB Serial Device to COM4
??? USB Serial Device to COM5
>Configured WSJTX to QDX
> Configured Audio to QDX USB for rcvr and xmtr
>Plugged in QDX:
??? Ant to WM-2
??? Power to 12VDC (LED starts flashing at 0.1s for 5 seconds and then stays on)
??? USB cable to USB connection on Acer (no sound ping acknowledgement at connection)
>Obviously no power out and no control over the radio from WSJTX.
>USB cable used successfully with IC-7200 and WSJTX and other digital software.

Just need some tips to get off dead center here. Further QDX testing??
Thanks in advance.

IIR, the QDX audio devices show as that--not USB. I believe the phrase "QDX" was included in the audio device name... (It's been a year since I touched this!)

Is that what you've configured?

Paul,?

Yes it is. My issue is the apparent non-recognition of the QDX by the laptop. Apparently, one just plugs every thing in, fires up WSJTX, and the radio takes off in receive mode.?

While the two "USB ports" are visible in the device manager, there are no connections made and the QDX is locked in transmit.?

As I said, I just need to determine if the radio is functioning or is it a connecy/set-up issue.?

Hello William,

I start the initial checkout with PuTTy and the terminal programs to remove any WSJT-X configuration issues.? This also allows checking the firmware version and updating it if needed.?

I would remove the QDX, open Device Manager, attach QDX, and turn it on.? The Com port that is added is the one for QDX.

PuTTy is available here:

Evan,?

Appreciate the advice. I reviewed W7RLF's last video and he does what you describe. Also, the LED behavior his exhibits is what mine is doing. So, I believe my QDX is functioning correctly.?

So, I do have PUTTY and will continue as you advise.?

Thank you again.?

It is better to enable QDX after turning on and starting the system on the computer. Then it is correctly determined by the system. I tested this on two different computers with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

Yeah... "Locked in transmit" seems unlikely for a simple "failure to connect", though.

There's a common thing that's reported on the 991 where it goes into transmit, if on, when the computer is rebooted. That's because when DTR (or is it RTS) goes low, it acts as the default PTT. Maybe that's happening here?

I vaguely recall reading that order is important-- Disconnect power and USB from the QDX, turn computer on, apply QDX power, plug in USB, something like that. Something about the USB init negotiation with the computer only happens once, with the QDX (and QMX too!)

I keep coming back to seeing USB, not COM and Audio. The computer is seeing something plugged in (USB), but not the correct devices. I don't remember, was there a driver that's supposed to be loaded? Is there something showing in DM Unknown Devices?

In DM, go into View and show hidden devices (i.e., devices that are not present.) I'd delete the hidden devices, especially if there are a lot, just to simplify things.

You could try re-flashing the QDX memory. (How-to is in the manual!) If you can't get to the flash drive to load the firmware, suspects are your USB cable, and some problem on the host computer.

Have you tried known good USB cables? How about another host computer? Are you using a USB hub? What if you connect directly to the computer?

Good Luck, William!

Oleh and other gentlemen,

That's what I found out. Thank you!

The little fella is an amazing piece of work and the support offered here by both Hans and the rest of the QRP Labs group membership is absolutely terrific! Once I stumbled through my first waves of ignorance, everything fell into place and the QDX performed flawlessly. I have never had a radio I built out of the box (off the bench?) work with as little troubleshooting as this one!

And I cannot say enough about the forethought and engineering that went into the creation of this radio. Not to gush too much (impossible!) but after building this kit and watching the many presentations by Hans -- -- I remain astounded at the genius of his work..

..also on the order sheet for the "low band" version of this hoping to catch the magic once more!

As Alistair Sim said in his famous Yuletide recounting in the movie, Scrooge, My sincere gratitude to all!? ? ?
