QDX and Fldigi

I know that having searched this group there are several threads about QDX and Fldigi but I do not succeed to set all up my station and have it working well.
My computer is under Windows11 and my QDX is a Hi Band (PCB Rev 5) with Fldigi v.4.2.06.17
1. CONFIG DIALOG - SOUNDCARD - DEVICES
Each time I start Fldigi I need to check Portaudio and then I see QDX in Capture and Playback. I SAVE but nothing is saved and the next time I start Fldigi I need to do it again. Anyway the Fldigi screen shows that data are exchanged with the QDX when Portaudio is checked.
2. CONFIG DIALOG - RIG CONTROL - HAMLIB
I chose Kenwood TS-480 and Device=COM4, I save it but I have no control of the QDX (no modification of frequency which remains to 00000, no PTT).
?
I use mainly my QDX with JS8CALL and occasionnaly with JTDX, both work well.
I would like to setup Fldigi to be able to use RTTY (I know most digital modes cannot be used).
I shall appreciate to know precisely the settings which will allow my QDX to work with Fldigi as other OMs have succeeded doing it. Thank you for your help.

Hello Pierre! I have spent hundreds of RTTY QSO on QDX and I can share my experience. The Fldigi configuration will be saved if the configuration is saved in the main window menu Configure - Save Config. QDX is controlled via Hamlib, but I immediately refused such control. It is better to transfer control to Flrig, then it will be possible to control not only the frequency from any frequency panel but also the gain of QDX, which turned out to be very important. The Flrig configuration has QDX and there should be no problems.?

Thanks Oley, I have never used Flrig even if it is installed in my computer.
Could you, please, answer me with your settings in order that I can configure a working software?
73 - Pierre - FK8IH

These are my Flrig settings. In FLDigi settings, remove control from HamLib and set control to FlRig. I think that's all.

Thanks Oley, done. I applied your settings to Flrig, removed Hamlib control and enabled Flrig control of Fldigi. The CAT is working now and my QDX obeys.
However I still have a problem of Audio (under Windows 11):
- volume mixer: I read fldigi ver 4.2.06 / QDX-FK8IH 100%
- Flrig: Col 99%
- Fldigi: I must check Portaudio every time I restart fldigi, I click on Configure-Save Config but it does not work, Portaudio is not checked when I restart
When I Tune with Fldigi or clicks PTT with Flrig the QDX Led flashes fast twice every second, which shows the CAT command arrives in the QDX but the ausio level is too low to trigger the QDX in transmit.
My question: is there a place, a ruler,... to increase the audio level of Fldigi?

On the bottom status/control bar of fldigi near the right corner is the TX level attenuator - it is by default set to some non-zero value.? You want to set it to zero for full volume from fldigi.

Pierre, the configuration is saved after saving through the menu of this button

Thanks again Oleh, it works nearly well now with the right RX level attenuator set to ZERO. I had searched in the manuals (more than 1,000 pages!) of Fldigi and could not imagine that to have full audio the slider was to be set to its minimum. Well, using Flrig my computer works well with my QDX and it transmits RTTY.
I still have one problem: each time I start Fldigi I have to check Portaudio in order to have Capture and Playback QDX. Then I click on the Save button then the Close button and I open the Configure button on top of Fldigi window and click on Save Config but it does not work, next time I open Fldigi I must do it again. What is amazing is that yesterday during my first trials of Fldigi this Save Config worked well and now it does not work anymore!!!
Anyway I'm happy to have more capabilities for my wonderful QDX (high band 30-20-17-15-12-10M).

This is my Flrig and Fldigi window.

Do you first attach USB and then turn on QDX BEFORE starting fldigi?
If you start fldigi first, the QDX audio devices are not present, so it can't find the port audio you saved.
Stan KC7XE

Stan, yes I first attach USB then turn on QDX then start fldigi and flrig. I still have this Portaudio unchecked with the following message:
"Could not open audio device: PortAudio error: Unanticipated host error Check for h/w connection and restart fldigi"
73 - Pierre - FK8IH

Interesting.? Very strange.
So this is not a save-config issue.?
It is an issue with how fldigi interacts with your Win11 and USB connection - causing fldigi to disable the port audio when it gets this error.? Since you had it working for a time, it may be something flaky in the USB connection.? If you are using a USB-C port on the computer, use instead a USB-A port (with a good A to C cable).? If you are using a high-speed USB port or a USB-hub, switch to a different port.? These things go through different driver chains in Win11 and sometimes can cause problems.? Or maybe just a different USB cable, perhaps with clamp-on ferrites.
Good luck -
Stan KC7XE

Stan, yes I probably have a problem of USB cable: USB and ethernet cables used in digital communication must be of top quality. I'll check that.
73 - Pierre - FK8IH

Stan, I did several things:
- I changed the USB cable with one looking nicer and having a ferrite;
- I plugged it in another socket of my computer. Until now I plugged it in a USB3 plug and I got a message "Port audio device not available when I tried to check Portaudio and Portaudio remained unchecked. Now the USB cable is plugged in a USB2 socket and it works nicely (Rx and Tx).
The only remaining problem is that I need to check "Soundcard" "Devices" "Portaudi" each time I start fldigi, the "Save Config" button on top line of fldigi has no effect.
73 - Pierre - FK8IH

Glad you got it working.? Sometimes USB v3 ports do have problems with lower-speed devices.
Regarding the save config, I have never had a problem with it.
Maybe your user doesn't have write privileges for the folder it is stored in.?
Open the menu "File - Folders - Fldigi Config".? This will take you to the folder fldigi is using.? If it is under the Program Files area, you won't have write permission.? My folder is under my user name.
Stan KC7XE

Stan, I opened this "File - Folders - Fldigi Config" and read its content. Do you know what could be the name of a file in which the configuration is saved, I could perhaps edit it and have Portaudio definively checked?
73 - Pierre - FK8IH

In order to find a solution I "ran as admistrator" fldigi, checked Portaudio and flrig, "saved config" in the top menu and it works: after closing fldigi it restarts with Portaudio checked. If I start it as normal user Portaudio is not checked. I'm quite surprised but I found a solution to my problem even if this problem is faced by nobody else!

Where is your installation?
Stan tells you the problem.
Fldigi writes to the program folder so if you install in "Program Files" then you have to run as Administrator.

The file you want is "fldigi_def.xml" and the port audio items start about line 1998.
?
But if this file is in a folder where your user (when you run the program) does not have write permission, I would encourage you to re-install fldigi after reading how to install the user directory in a writeable area - it will save you lots of hassles later on when you want to change more parameters, like disabling the RTTY tx shaping mode (which allows QMX to do rtty properly), make tx macros, etc.? You really want the save config to work.? And it is almost certainly just a Windows file permissions problem.? You will do yourself a favor figuring that out rather than hand-editing the config files.

Fldigi v.4.2.06 is installed in "Programs" folder and fldigi.files is installed in my "user" folder.
In order to start it well I have checked "run as administrator" in the fldigi.exe file and now I just have to enter the administrator password BUT this is the first time I face this problem of rights between "ordinary user" and "administrator" as I installed the software as any other software.
Anyway the good news are that it's working now.
