QCX: receiver is dead
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJust finished my 30M QCX last night. The receiver seems DEAD, but the transmitter works! TX puts about 2 watts out (I know a bit low) but changing TX freq I can hear the signal on my big rig and freq. seems good. But when I transmit with my big rig I can NOT hear the signal at all on the QCX! When I try to peak BPF I get two bars, that is all C1 does nothing and I can BARELY hear the 700 Hz tone. ? Only mistake during assembly was wrong resistors in two spots, so I unsoldered and found that the little ¡°circle¡± solder pad came loose on R19 and R26. I flowed enough solder around and I THINK the new resistors in R19 and R26 are connected to the trace. ? Any ideas? Almost ALL voltages on the ICs are off. Most pins are HIGH by about 1 V, but some are low. I measured them but will not post unless someone can figure out what they mean. Maybe T/R stuck in transmit? ? Paul K3STX |
In my experience, once these solder pads come loose they are gone and you cannot trust the connection. I suggest checking the continuity (resistance) from the component upstream to downstream of those resistors. I suspect you will have to install new resistors without the through-hole pads, joining the upstream and downstream components.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýBINGO!! Bad trace from R19 to R20. Soldered in a jumper and BINGO!! Hears well. Can peak the BPF, but not minimum on the other ¡°alignment¡± settings yet. But one thing at a time. ? Thanks for your help. I should NEVER had made that mistake. I was looking at the wrong picture for the resistors. Had to cover up the parts of the page I was not interested in to avoid putting in ¡°right¡± parts in ¡°wrong¡± holes. ? paul ? From: <[email protected]> on behalf of Steve Zabarnick <zabarnick@...> ? glad you found your trace issue.? now to get this receiver to work very well -- that IQ calibration is vital.? I just emailed another builder on the same topic - perhaps both of you have correctly done the IQ calibration -- if not it makes a huge difference.? without this precise calibration, the image signal (around 1.4 kHz away) may be as large as the signal on your transmit frequency.? with careful adjustment of the nice routine that the designer provided - you can null this down more than 50 dB.? follow the instructions in the manual -- the result is very cool !? glad a few of these nice rigs are landing here in the land of PVRC.?
