oscilloscope use

 

I finally replaced my oscope which I foolishly sold years ago. but struggle to remember how to use it.

does anyone know agood online resource to study up on using one?? im not taking about how to use the buttons and features but rather it's practical common uses.? like when to user the 1x,10x, twin lead probes, tracing circuits, do's and don'ts,? e.t.c.?

I have been exploring
Its pretty informative.
I still have not learned what the bnc-cable with two alligator clips is for. Im guessing low voltage DC say 40v or less.

Bryan:? Use 10X probe setting whenever possible, most probes have lousy frequency response in the 1X position.? Compensate your probes to their 'scope channel prior to use.

Don, good to know about 1x and freq resp. I was aware of the probe cal and all that was covered in the manual for the scope. I read somewhere today that the ones with 2 alligator clips was for the function signal generator output it has. I just dont want to use them for the wrong application and damage something. Im also going to run through Hans trouble shooting video and get familiar with what the QCX+? is doing.

Not really on-line, but quite cheap, even more so for the Kindle version.? Available at Amazon and probably many other places as? well.
 

In a private conversation, one of the excellent contributors of this group shared this link, which I wanted to post here for the benefit of others. Its about all the grounding bits included with a passive probe.

I don't have an oscilloscope yet and the one that McClanahan bases his text on, the "Rigol DS1102E 100 MHz digital" seems to be out of production. The book was first published 2015, so I'm guessing there are a lot of newer oscilloscopes on the market.

Does anyone have a suggestion for an inexpensive digital oscilloscope? I don't have any experience with which to choose one and there are many available on Amazon and other sources. At this point, I don't really have a need for a very complex instrument, just something suitable for analyzing my herd of QRP radios and test gear. Thanks.

I don’t have a lot of scope experience. I bought this one 4 or 5 years ago and it is much nicer than the old tube scopes I have used. It is recommended in these groups often ?

Oscilloscopes all have very similar controls, your text should be applicable to them all.??
I have 2 Hantek 'scopes, one the box type and the other essentially identical except that it is headless; all of the controls are on an application which runs on a computer.
The box type is more portable, the headless has an arbitrarily-large display.
And don't skimp on bandwidth; 50MHz is barely adequate for 10 meter work; I went for the highest available at the time, 4 channels @100MHz.? 2 channels may be enough for your needs.
I also opted for the internal tracking generator.
Don't forget to budget for quality 10X probes if they are not included with the 'scope.??
I started my career in the '70s using Tektronix 'scopes with storage CRTs.? If you are used to those analog 'scopes you are in for a pleasant surprise as regards storage and triggering capabilities and convenience.?
Hantek, Rigol, Siglent are all respected name brands in this mid-tier space.??

Personally I bought a Siglent SDS-1104XE which is a very capable 100mhz 4 channel unit. It’s has loads of features, an excellent display and is expandable to 200mhz. Very pleased with the purchase and also bought a Siglent 60mhz function generator which be controlled by the scope to display the bandpass characteristics of things like filters as shown here in this short video where I sweep a low pass filter .
