Antenna tuner companion for QMX? #qmx

Hello everybody,

have you please anybody heard about / seen a tiny QRP antenna tuner of size comparable to QMX? Ideally in the same size of case, black anodized? HI

Hi Jindra,

It's not in a black anodized case, but the Kanga QRP Pocket Transmatch is very similar in size to the QMX and makes a great companion to the QMX in my experience.

This one is pretty close in size...

I like the 4-States tuner for use with the QMX because it presents at most a 2:1 SWR to the QMX while tuning up your antenna, so it's quite safe on your QMX finals while you're finding a match.

It's about the same footprint size as the QMX, but it's almost twice the thickness.

I use this ATU with my QDX and QMX when not using a matched antenna. It performs well (I recommend this seller, the same guy that is the approved tr(u)SDX seller), it¡¯s an automatic ATU with latching relays so doesn¡¯t drain the internal batteries anytime soon once tuned.?

The unit is about the same size as the QDX and is a great aesthetic match.?

I have, and have used multiple times now, a knockoff version of that ATU-10, the ATU-10-A I think it's labeled? Has a larger button on the front to reset, and capable up to 20w. Found it on Amazon for $30 which is hard to pass up.? If/When it stops working it won't break my heart at all to toss it but so far it's been a solid performer. It's roughly the same thickness as the qmx but a tad longer and a few hairs wider. I do pucker up every time i have to tune for fear of blowing out fets, but it tunes really fast luckily. And I don't worry that much, having swr protection at 50% (less might even be better, it'll tune down to .1w but 1w would be better and relatively safe). I do occasionally have to reset the qmx's internal swr protection which is a good thing. But it's always eventually pulled through after a time or two. It's also the exact same size as the talentcell 6000 which I use.

I have had PA FET failures that may have been caused by the high SWR that the ATU-100 causes when searching for a match.? I have since put protection Zeners (43V) D503 & D504 on the QMX (Zener diodes not included in the kit).? Note if the high high SWR causes high voltage this may kill the PA FET faster than the protection can work.

Any switched-element tuner is going to present the radio with severely mismatched conditions (nearly open circuit in some cases) as it toggles relays searching for a match.?
I have the same tuner, I? use mine with a QRP-O-Meter between the radio and tuner; set to VSWR bridge position, its 6dB loss keeps the radio
from seeing those wildly mismatched conditions.? When a match has been achieved I set it to bypass position and operate.

Hello,

Please see my proposal that suits your needs: KT-005 Automatic Antenna Tuner.
It fits perfectly in terms of size and appearance to QCX-mini and QMX-mini series. It's not available yet, but I hope it looks promising.

Sadly Four States no longer ship outside the US.

I have one of these¡

I think it¡¯s based on this¡

I was going to build one but couldn¡¯t buy the parts for the price on AliExpress so bought one to test and it¡¯s fine.

I use a home-brew Z-match tuner with my QRP radios - very similar to the kanga products design. It's reliable and has a switchable SWR indicator. It's slightly bulkier than the QMX but its versatility more than makes up for that. If I were buying something, I'd go for the ATU-10 or the Kanga pocket transmatch.

Popping the QMX into SWR measurement mode (under the Hardware tests menu) ensures its PA is run at much reduced output levels and offers good protection while tuning.?

Cheers,?

You can build your own like

It is smaller than the QMX.
Using a LED as tuningindicator isn't the best choice for outside.

You can run one of these in line and then use any auto tuner without fear of high SWR.

Hi

Go for ATU-10

Read the reviews

Open source (same guy who developed the famous ATU-100, this is for QRP)

Cheaper than most manual tuners

I am using it for

QRP Labs QDX QMX, Icom 705, Hermes lite 2

don't miss it

Very kindly Barb WB2CBA lend me one, (I had the one with a nice front panel)

While testing

I even tuned a destroyed vertical :)

Thanks again Barb

That Krait Technologies KT-005 looks really good, except the SMA connectors. ?They would require adaptors for BNC on both connectors unless you have custom cables, and there is insertion loss.

I wonder if they¡¯ve chosen SMA due to the form factor, or whether they could be retrofitted with BNC?

Very cool looking tuner, regardless.

SBJ... if someone can't fit an SMA connector to a cable they shouldn't call themselves a radio ham and should give up this technical hobby and start stamp collecting or such.
