QDX Win7 COM port
Just finished my QDX Rev 2. All checks on board, for shorts, opens and voltages were good. Powered up with good current (115 mA on Rx).?
Installed STM driver as per manual, but cannot get Win7 laptop to recognize it. No ports at all noted in device manager. WSJT-X only shows USB as a way to connect. Went into Computer Management and added port from STM which gave a COM15. However this is present whether QDX is present or is not present.? Connected QDX to Win10 laptop and all functions normally. Tx works on all bands and Tx power draw into a dummy load on all bands is as expected (780-1000 mA) at 8 volts. The QDX is built for 9V operations. Status LED is as expected. Question is, did I get the right driver for Win7 or is there another driver I need?? (I used the STM32102 suggested in the manual.) -- 73, Dan? NM3A |

Hi Dan,
The COM port is displayed in Control Panel / System / Device Manager when the driver is installed correctly and connected to the machine. You can check this by looking for Windows Driver Package - STMicroelectronics (usbser) Port in the Control Panel / Programs list. If not, install dpinst_x86.exe manually in the Program Files / STMicroelectronics / Software / Virtual comport driver / Win7 folder. There may be a conflict between driver programs, and a program called USBDeview will help you remove the faulty driver and install the correct one. Notice what USBDeview tells you when you plug the USB into your device. USBDeview displays all device connections used since the system was installed, so be careful not to delete the connection in use. I hope this description helps. -- Gyula HA3HZ |

Dan,
I did say you have to be determined! I hope this will work the same on W7 64 bit. STM XP-W8 drivers \en.stsw-stm32102_v1.5.0(1).zip Unzip and run. This places the drivers on the computer but Windows 7 is no longer updated so it does not recognise them, refuses to install. This downloads \STM_Virtual_COM_Port_1.3.1.zip. Unzip. In it are .inf files. Try updating the driver and directing the installer to the relevant .inf 32/64 bit. Plug in the QDX, power it up. Go to Device Manager, find the STM device, on my W7 it comes under "Other Devices" QDX Transceiver. It will have an exclamation mark signifying a problem. Right click - update driver. Browse my computer - Let me pick - A long list of hardware is shown select Ports (COM and LPT). Next select STMicroelectronics. One model is shown, select. Next, you get a notice saying Windows cannot verify.. continue with Yes. Now the QDX should appear as a STMicroelectronics Virtual COM port in Device Manager with the allocated number. Try Putty as a test or see if it works with WSJT-X. It should work but perhaps reboot both PC and QDX if it does not. This may be required to be repeated if you subsequently use a different USB port. * Now! I have just done this on my W7 laptop using a different USB socket than before. As I suspected I had to go through the above process. It did not work... Windows had assigned a COM port number that was reserved for a virtual port. In Device Manager right click STMicroelectronics Virtual COM port - Properties - Port Settings - Advanced - Select a different port number. My well-used W7 objected to choices I made so I just selected a high number that probably had not been used and selected "Yes" to continue. After that I needed to reboot the laptop, then the QDX and finally Putty connected. **** I also think I never got W7 to see the QDX as a memory stick for updating.. It appears as a STMicroelectronics Virtual COM port with exclamation mark. Do not know how to get that working, possibly needs to be directed to a USB memory stick driver. That would probably ruin the COM port setting. I use my W10 if needed. 73 Alan G4ZFQ |
The STM VCP driver V1.5 also works with Windows 7. However, the QDX uses a different product ID than the one in the INF

file. Therefore, after installing the driver, the QDX is not automatically recognised. In Windows 7, the QDX must therefore be manually assigned to the driver after installing the driver package. The key was this line in Hans' write-up: went to Device Manager selected the "Unknown Device" and clicked "Update Driver" "Browse my Computer.." - "Let me Pick.." - Ports COM andLPT -? Manufacturer STMicroelectronics.I can't tell you how many times I went through the "Update Driver" procedure and just didn't see the "Let me Pick ..." text at the bottom of the pop-up box.? I shudder to think how much time I wasted!? After seeing your post, it took about a minute! Thanks again! - Bruce K1FFX |
