Hi Peter (and anyone else interested):

I'm at the early stages of doing something similar over bluetooth le. I have the hardware working and am exchanging CAT transactions with my QCX-mini from Python on my iPad. There are two Python implementations for IOS that are theoretically capable of using BLE. I'm using the older "Pythonista" app because I've had good luck with its BLE API in the past, but the more modern "Pyto" app should also work - but I've not tried it.

I'm presently using an Adafruit "Bluefruit LE UART Friend" board with good success (after I used a terminal interface to change it's baud rate to 38,400). It's power supply is very flexible and can run on 12 Volts from my batteries just fine.

Here's the setup (running off AA batteries for testing because I haven't built a power cable yet for it to connect to the battery pack in the picture).

This easily available interface works well with test software from the MacOS as well, and I already use it to keep VFOA values updated in the popular "RumlogNG" logger for Macintosh, but that program has a bug preventing some other CAT commands from working.

The IOS version of that Rumlog supports BLE, but It's going to take a little lobbying to get the author to support the QCX. So far he only supports the KX3 and Icom 705 ?via bluetooth.

I wonder what language you're writing in, and if a port to MacOS is possible? I might be some help if you are interested.

Mark me down as interested. I¡¯ve got a Mac, an iPad, and an iPhone, all aging but working well. I¡¯m not excited about getting and learning additional hardware and an OS to chat with QRP-Labs devices. And out in the field a smartphone makes more sense than any computer.

A kit for the BT LE hardware would be great. A lot of people, including hams have iPhones. I can¡¯t understand the lack of support beyond indifference at Apple. A trillion-dollar company could afford to hire or contract a couple of hams to make their hardware more ham friendly.
