Preparing for the new U3S firmware, I bought a USBasp programmer off eBay and can't get it installed.

I've tried and a dozen similar ones, to no avail.? Zadig doesn't detect the device (or at least doesn't show it does), so it can't install a driver for it.

is 100% identical to the one I got.? The Chip is an ATMEGA8A.

In Windows 7, I plug this onto the USB cable and the device's red LED comes on steady.

Windows shows . It then uselessly installs a driver that doesn't work and shows an error in Device Manager.? I uninstall the device.

I run Zadig 2.3 in Administrator and it does not show this device at all.

Am I doing something wrong, or have I actually managed to get a dead USBasp?

This shows my installation.

In Zadig the main things are "List All Devices" and the USB ID

If it is not seen on any USB port (try all and with no other USB device installed) then I guess it is faulty.

It co-installs the needed USB drivers. In WIndows 7 the install procedure is straight-forward.

With "all devices" listed in Zadig, it still shows up as the "Unknown Device" that Win7 errored-out on.? When that entry is selected and the driver package for USBasp described in the instructions is installed anyway, it doesn't fix anything and I'm back where I started.? This shouldn't be this difficult.? I'm beginning to think this is a bad unit.
