QLG1 with Kenwood Tm710a


 

My venerable Deluo GPS puck bit the big one a couple weeks ago. I'm wondering if anyone has used the QLG1 as a gps receiver for APRS reception on the formentioned radio. I have a QLG1, from a wspr build and was very impressed with the sensitivity. Other than the default 9600 baud on power up, any reason why it wouldn't work? I can change the radio for 9600 nema 0183 data,so that is a moot point.?


 

Read the QLG1 datasheet. You may need to change the baud rate and select the
NEMA sentances you need, then write the new configuration to the QLG1's RAM or
EEPROM for the changes to be persistant. You might also need to convert the
TTL ASCII sentances which come out of the QLG1 into full RS232 using a MAX232
or MAX3232 - check the TM710 requirements carefully as an error could let out
its 'magic smoke'.
The software package TERMINAL, available from :-

is very useful for writing control messages to the QLG1 as it allows you to
embed 'control codes' in the ascii string which is, IIRC, required in order to
change the configuration parameters.

The default NMEA sentances should suffice, easier to change settings in the radio than mess with the GPS chip (and they are volatile, no eeprom).
AFAIK the TM710 uses RS232 levels at the external port, so the QLG1 is not a perfect match. You will need a MAX232 and a 7805 to make it work.
Easier to grab a GPS puck that has RS232 levels and internal voltage regulation (8-15V input).
