log vs audio taper (was: Re: Volume controls from Amazon - be forewarned)


 

Linear taper potentiometers have a linear resistance change across the range of the resistance. Audio or logarithmic versions are made so the resistance changes, more or less as the log of the position of the wiper. In a log potentiometer, the resistance increases much more quickly as you move toward maximum resistance.? This mimics how we hear because our ears are, basically, sensitive to sound in a logarithmic fashion.??
