Audio level request
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýPerhaps my suggestion was without enough detail and I assumed too much. In my experience, the suggestion to "just turn down the volume" is no substitution for AGC, and the multiple reasons that it was invented. If my reasons to want? and use "unnecessary" AGC, in single tone digital modes, make me a technical dufus, so be it. If I requested Hans to do something extraordinary, or difficult, or time consuming, or contrary to his vision - to make AGC available for all modes - I hope he will offer something more sensible than "turn down the volume". wa4hei Re: Audio level request From: Daniel Conklin Date: Thu, 22 May 2025 12:33:39 EDT Fred,
AGC is not necessary with the Digi mode because the audio is
always at 100%. You don't even need to listen to it since it's
encoded ad interpreted by the computer. If you do want to listen
to it, then just turn down the earphone volume.?

The audio levels are painfully loud when adjusted for correct usb output to WSJT-X.I think I understand what you are saying, and the need for an audio change - but I think the words you used are not quite accurate. Adjusting the USB level for WSJT-x doesn't (or shouldn't) affect the audio level out the earphone/headphone jack.? They are separate audio paths.
So I think the reason the headphone audio level for digi mode is very high is for a different reason.
I believe it is because the way you set filters/AGC for CW mode (and SSB) requires you to turn the audio gain higher to get the appropriate CW audio level - and that makes the audio level in Digi mode higher.?
Since digi mode is not affected by the AGC, this makes it comparatively very loud.
?
I don't experience this problem with my setup, perhaps because I use different AGC settings (something close to the default), and don't often listen to weak CW signals for which I turn up the volume.
Does this sound like it could describe what you are experiencing?
?
If so, yes, I agree that adding a capability to silence the headphone audio for just digi mode would be useful.

Yes Stan, that is the scenario. When listening on headphones to relatively weak signals in, for instance LSB mode...to change to another mode you can only click forward passing through Digi mode. In my case and the same for others posting to this group, audio is painfully loud. I don't believe that I have changed any settings other than the band configuration overall audio gain. I do not support the use of AGC for digital modes either. The difference in headphones levels is the problem. If the levels for LSB, USB and CW were higher, the end result would be the same as by reducing Digi level.

Audio levels problem solved ! It was due to incorrect parameters in the AGC settings. I swear I did not do it....think these defaults came with v1.02 ? The AGC threshold was set to 15...should be 8. Also sample blocks was 2....should be 5. The audio levels on all modes are now roughly the same. Audio attenuation setting I have now increased to -100dB, seems I have very sensitive headphones.
