The enthusiasm?is so infections, might even get ME on SSB eventually!

It's worth watching the earlier parts of Mike's video as well. The rattlesnake he encounters on the way to his park activation is beautiful!

nice video but i think he has just installed the update and not gone through the eventuelly dangerous calibration procedure.
I am still hesitating.

Martin,
Yes, you are right! But it just re-inforces what Hans has said all along; you don't need to do the calibration for SSB to work well.?

I think many (me included)have focused on getting everything to work perfectly, rather than just getting on the air and using the rig.?

I think I read on the beta page for SSB, calibration was NOT required. Just install update and usb on.-W7YWF

Thank you Hans!
It is so cool!
So many new possibilities to play with!
The latest thing I did:
Installing pat + ardop onto RPI zero w.
Together with my mobile connected to the RPI zero via WIFI it's the smallest Winlink client ever!

Don't fear the Calibration, it is very reliable now!
1. Make sure to do all the other tests before and inspect the results carefully.
2. Use a properly connected dummy load.
3. Regard the calibration as quality control! It involves all components and is very picky. When it passes, the device is reliable and won't break on your next outdoor trip.

My QMX was rxing and txing fine though the I/Q tests were a bit noisy.
The calibration was permanently failing.
Then I resoldered the trifiliar coil.
Now the calibration runs flawlessly!

I made dozens of FT8 & FT4 contacts right after finishing my QMX+ built with no issues at all. Then I tried calling to a group of friends ranging from San Diego to Oregon who were chatting on 40 meters. It took a few calls but they finally heard me and wondered what was wrong with my rig! (I'm usually running about 900 watts to this crowd, not the 3-4 my QMX+ was putting out.) They said my signal was not always copyable due to QSB but when they heard me, the audio was very clear. Band conditions were terrible at the time so I'm calling that a win!

This was with a Heil portable headset for Icom rigs with my little adapter box that diverts the mic signal from tip to ring and provides a PTT button. I've tried the rig with a few mics, including a tiny lavalier that I believe is intended for car Bluetooth installations. Every mic worked just fine although I've got a few of the recommended elements on the way from DigiKey.
