Hi,
?
I've just ordered a QMX+. I want to print the assembly manual out. I'm assuming it'll be a Rev 3 PCB but I'm wondering if I should wait until the kit arrives to be sure and not 'waste' paper and ink?

Thanks
?
Mike

Hi Mike,

I built both of mine from the pdf on screen.? Works fine.? Before I built the first one, I looked into a proper printer producing a colour copy and simply bound - huge cost (not a problem if you can do it at work!).? Having built a few Elecraft kits I wanted to tick off as I went along.? TBH, you? don't need to.

While seems likely you may get version 3, building from a screen works nicely. Just starting my qmx plus build now. Plenty of room on small surface for my screen, kit and tools. It's actually easier to reference assembly manual in vertical position. Try it before spilling the ink.?

Probably a waste of paper either way.
Most of us have a laptop or small desktop that can sit on the workbench,
better than paper in that you can quickly search for a specific part.
?
I'd just print out a few key pages that you might want to mark up.
For example, print the BOM, and use that to inventory all parts in the kit as a first step.
?
No hint that there are any hardware changes imminent.
Hans will be busy with firmware for some time to come.

If you just ordered it, it's a Version? 3.? ?Hans said at the start that he would not ship 3 until the stock of older versions is empty.? I ordered? weeks ago and it was a 3.?

Printing in color will cost a fortune. Even mono isn't cheap via online printers.?

I have the build manual on both a large screen and an iPad.? It works well that way.

Thanks for confirming what I thought. Looking through the manual, and as others have stated, I think I can probably get away with using a tablet I have here, or, as it's probably not going to be a 'couple of evenings' build maybe clear some space in front of the main PC monitor and use that area for the build instead.

Building from a screen works well, but I prefer to check off things as I go. However, the biggest reason to print things out for me, is to document any issues or changes that I make to that particular unit. I have built many QRP Labs kits and they are frequently different revisions. If I don't document each one , it is a nightmare figuring out what I did on each one when a later mod is needed or wanted.?

On printing, I usually print 2 pages to a sheet and double sided and use 'draft' print quality. That makes the cost of paper and ink much lower - maybe about 1/5th the cost of full size, normal quality.?

Most browsers will let you save it as a PDF. I use a Mac and the IOS has a built in app called Preview. It lets me read PDFs and lets me markup the PDF. I can do dates, text boxes, and text for notes. I would think Windows can do the same thing.
