QMX SSB settings for Winlink?
Hello Hans and others, I just uploaded the new firmware and am trying to get Winlink / VARA-HF working. Are there any specific settings that need to be adjusted? When CAT control supposedly keys up the radio, I can see activity on the signal bars on the right side of the display, but I do not get the bar or even two dots under the "A" on the left side of the display. Thanks, Darrell |
As info, the power supply I am using indicates 0.6 amps at 9.15 volts when I believe it's transmitting. Idle is 0.137 amps at 9.15 volts. On Thu, Mar 20, 2025 at 7:43?PM Darrell KI4RXJ via <kruegdr=[email protected]> wrote:

Got it working, had to change the microphone setting to "USB". Band conditions on 40 m weren't great, but I did manage to hit speed level 6 on VARA-HF. If anyone has other settings that would be beneficial, please let us know. On Thu, Mar 20, 2025 at 7:50?PM Darrell KI4RXJ via <kruegdr=[email protected]> wrote:

Yes, first of all you need to use either update 01 or 02; the CAT PTT was broken in the original release.
?
Then these settings worked for me, along with setting the output all the way up to 0dB in the soundcard settings:
Radio settings:
Radio Model: Kenwood Amateur, USB, use internal soundcard
(if you use "USB Digital", it will set qmx to digi mode and only use low rates)
Control port: the COM port of your QMX/QMX+, baud rate doesn't matter, don't check enable boxes
PTT Port: Kenwood TS-590S? (it didn't have TS480 or generic here).
?
I made a connection and sent email just now.? Low power out, but VARA did switch to one of the higher rates and send successfully.

(I set to log radio control commands so I could see that it was using correct ones; you don't need to set that).

Hello Darrell ?
This bar and dots under the 'A' only applies to Digi mode. But I agree it would be useful in SSB mode when the USB audio source is selected. I will add it...? 73 Hans G0UPL |
Thank you gentlemen, I was able to send an email last night at level 6. What's the best way to set up for switching between Winlink/VARA and JS8 call? I noticed in JS8 call there's?a radio setting for "None", "USB", and "Digi/Packet". With USB and Digi/Packet selected I wasn't able to get out. I'll have to go up and switch the radio to Digi mode to do JS8 call. Or maybe I can change it in the serial menu?? Currently my rig is in the shop about 150 feet from the house and I use remote desktop to interface with the radio and pc in the shop. Or maybe I can change it in the serial menu??With a little testing, I see that JS8call, with the radio mode set to "Data/Pkt", will use Digi mode on the QMX if you manually set QMX to digi mode.? It for some reason does not seem to ever send the mode command (MD6). ?
When I set the JS8call radio mode to "USB", it does indeed send the mode command (MD2) when you hit 'ok' to dismiss the radio settings dialog.? And it works fine for me in USB; I get good hearbeat responses, at a little lower level than Digi mode, since SSB right now is putting out a bit less power.
?
JS8call unfortunately won't switch QMX back to Digi mode, at least in any tests I have run.
But you can do that yourself remotely by sending the MD6 command via USB.? One way to do this is to bring up the QMX terminal program, select "PC and CAT", then "CAT command test".? Type in "MD6" and the radio will switch to Digi mode.? You can type in "MD" to verify, and see the response "MD6".? [The very first time you bring up this CAT command tool, you may have to type in the first command twice; sometimes the very first command isn't recognized.]? Some other radio programs have a tool that you can use to send custom commands to your radio; these will also work to send the remote command.

Thank you Stan, I fiddled with it last night and had trouble with Putty connection to the right.? This afternoon I was using win link and it doesn't seem to get beyond speed level 5, then it falls back to speed setting 1 or 2.? Not sure if I am missing some microphone settings or the like? Transmit seems to be 4-5 watts based on my power supply display. On Fri, Mar 21, 2025 at 2:24?PM Stan Dye via <standye=[email protected]> wrote:

None of the mic-gain/agc/filter settings pertain to the USB / Winlink interface (assuming the software is as documented).
Only the phase and amplitude modulation compensation should make a difference - and I have it at pretty much default settings.
?
A lot of the speed will depend on quality of your connection (propagation).? I just connected again, with about 1W of output power, which is all it would give me on 40m SSB.? The speed/level varied a lot during the send of a large email -- it spent a lot of time at level 6 and down a notch at level 5, but several packets went out at level 7 and 8 (and some at 4 and 3, too).
?
So it is working for me...

Hm, thanks Stan. I ran the auto calibration the other night so that's fresh. I can reliably get level 5-10 on receive, but it doesn't seem to get out of level 1 or 2 on transmit. On Sun, Mar 23, 2025 at 10:33?PM Stan Dye via <standye=[email protected]> wrote:
