.6mm wire included in new kit

Hey all, recently got my first QMX kit delivered and noticed it included some .6mm wire, while most docs are saying it isn't included on newer kits due to better performance. Is it worth to get some more 28 awg magnet wire or just just the .6 where directed?

Rocky,
Everything I¡¯ve read says you get better radio performance when you use 28 awg.
Good thing it¡¯s quite inexpensive!
:)

Mike,

I don't know yet. I just finished a QMX high band and used the heavy .6mm wire which was provided. Yes difficult to work with. The results are output on every band is 5w or more. I used the 3:2 winding with 12 volts. I buck my battery down to exactly 11.9v
?
I just started a QMX mid band because I want 40m. The kit only came with the thin wire, 28 awg magnet wire. I have no choice but to use this wire. I will let you know the results on power out.
?
Either way, the results are outstanding and beyond expectations.

Dean,

The 0.6 was changed a month or two ago.
Hans had carefully tested and said the 28 awg was very slightly better and certainly easier to work with.

Alan,

I just finished the Mid QMX as stated before. I was supplied the thin .330 wire and completed all the windings. All went well and the kit fired up on the first shot and firmware was applied. All bands work as expected except for 60 meters. I'll work on that later.
?
Using the supplied wire gives me less than 4 watts on all bands. My first build with the thick wire gave me 5 or more watts.
?
Thats the only conclusion I can make. I would not call that result "better performance"
?
Any suggestions how I can raise the output?

It's nothing to do with the wire diameter. There must be some other reason. There is always variation from unit to unit anyway. In my tests for whether or not the wire diameter made any difference, I was extremely careful. I used a QMX+ which was the SAME throughout. I removed the choke and replaced the wire on it with 0.33mm. Then made power measurements (oscilloscope Vpp) and spectrum analyzer measurements (for harmonics) on all 12 bands. Next, changed the output transformer too, and re-measured. Finally, changed the SWR bridge and re-measured. The measurements were also done on a 9V QMX. By changing only one component at a time, I could be sure that no other build or components variance parameters could influence the conclusions.?
