Low Audio QDX
#build
#qdx
#transmitpower
Hello All,
?
I purchased and built a low HF QDX and modified it with the JasonKits MOSFET PA.?
I am to the point of frustration trying to troubleshoot why the radio is not TXing.
?
It seems to receive well with the level at around 60-65dB (My FT857 will max the meter, but I'll take 60). When I attempt to transmit, I only get the 3 pulses of the red LED.
?
I have tried on both a Raspberry Pi running 73Linux as well as a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 running Win11. I have confirmed all volume controls are at 100% on both devices.?
I have double and triple checked my soldering and, while it's not pretty, I am moderately confident that there are no cold joints.
?
I have run the diagnostics on the terminal and don't see anything that is problematic as far as I can tell.?
I am seeing the same behavior on 20m and 40m.
?
Is there anything else on the hardware side that I could focus on that might be the problem?
?
?
TIA,
Mark

Hi Alan This is the problem, not enough audio. Nothing else causes the flashing. But he said he has 3 flashes. On the older QDX firmware that means enough audio, on the newer firmware the LED would pulse at 1Hz if all OK (sinewave brightness), but the old for ware, it was 3 flashes which meant OK.? If it was 2 flashes that would mean insufficient audio level. I use Rpi400 and I don't have any such issues once it is set up correctly (full volume everywhere), the same as on a PC. So to me the symptoms indicate a hardware fault. I'm not a fan of the Jasonkits PA mod. But that doesn't mean you should get zero power out. I'd check toroid soldering first. 73 Hans G0UPL com |

I just did not think of firmware, the gentle pulse was introduced long ago, I thought everyone would have updated. I should remember, I was the one who asked for the 3 flashes to be reinstated, frantic flashes that said TX, TX! 73 Alan G4ZFQ |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýShoot!?
It is actually 2 flashes that I am seeing. I fat-fingered that. I am getting audio, just not enough to TX.
I am also running FW 1_10, for what it's worth.?
I will try lowering the threshold.
Thank You for the responses.
Mark

Hi Mark Reducing the threshold isn't the correct solution. You should set all the volumes on the computer to 100%. Application (WSJT-X slider), device volume and master volume.? 73 Hans G0UPL On Sun, Sep 15, 2024, 17:04 Mark B via <cfd.hazmat=[email protected]> wrote:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Hans,
I have confirmed that all of my volume controls on both computers, Pi and MS Surface, were set to 100% and I still am not putting out? a sufficient level of audio apparently. I am thinking it's probably more of a hardware issue?
Thank You,

Hi Mark I'm sorry but categorically there is no hardware issue. 2 flashes means it has audio (you selected the sound card correctly in WSJT-X etc) but not enough audio. Something is not configured correctly somewhere... There is no hardware involved. QDX is only looking at the audio coming over the USB audio link and two flashes means it isn't seeing sufficient volume. From the point QDX receives some audio samples from the USB, to the point it decides whether or not it has enough audio, there isn't any hardware.? 73 Hans G0UPL On Sun, Sep 15, 2024, 20:06 Mark B via <cfd.hazmat=[email protected]> wrote:

Hi, Just to add my 2 cents. I spent most of last night looking at the same issue on my QDX.? On windows there is a level control that is part of the playback sound device settings. You need to push that to 100%.? On Linux there is an equivalent that is hiding in the settings of the sound card.? Also that I set my Linux sound to default and then set the input and output of Linux to the QDX sound card in WSJX software.? The section of the troubleshooting guide that tells you what the red LED is trying to tell what the magic that allow my QDX to start to transmit. ? Hope this helps someone.? Ian? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHans,
Don't be sorry! That's exactly what I was looking for. I feel like I have gone around and around on my devices checking audio settings, sliders, etc.?
I have dealt with similar issues with digital decoding with SDR's.?
Your explanation makes it perfectly clear that I need to spend more time in the computer and not the QDX.
I was looking for some direction so I am not looking at the QDX when it's not the issue.
Thank You (and everyone else) for the help!
Mark

Hi Mark OK Good luck! QDX status LED is always in one of these states:
