QCX+ audio attenuation 5 seconds after power on

Hey all, I've had my QCX+ collecting dust for a few years.? When it was shelved, everything was working fine (according to a much more knowledge ham than myself - he had to fix a small assembly issue).? My son decided he wanted to learn CW so we've dusted it off and have been practicing a bit.? The first few days, after powering the unit on it would somewhat randomly reduce the volume almost completely.? We'd turn the volume all the way up on the radio and the speaker and could barely hear the dits and dahs.? After a minute or two, the volume would slowly return to normal (and we'd reduce the volume on the radio and the speaker).? It started to get worse, and now it's to the point where after about 5 seconds preceding power on the volume dies almost completely and never comes back.? If there is a transmission on frequency after power on it sounds beautiful, for about 5 seconds.? This occurs with or without an antenna connection (we are careful to put it into practice mode without an antenna) as well as with a dummy load.? It happens with an external speaker as well as with normal ear buds.? It happens on battery or on mains, but when on mains there's the added nuisance of odd high-pitched chirping as the volume is decreased to almost nothing.??

I'm moderately okay with electronics, but troubleshooting them is above my head.? I'm fine with a multi-meter and can follow steps fairly well, I just don't even know where to start.? I have tried resetting the radio to factory defaults and performing the alignment steps.? The alignment is odd though, the values are very, very low even with the volume all the way up.? The Peak BPF value is towards the bottom of the 06 range.? With the volume half way up, the I-Q bal range is 03.? The video indicates it should be around 10, but if I increase the volume all the way up, it's barely to the top of the 03 range.? Phase Lo is in the 02, and Phase Hi is in the 03 range.??

Other parameters that might matter: Firmware is 1.07a.? 40 meter band.? I do have the TXCO, no GPS module.? No modifications from the build manual except for a header on the JP17 to use the battery meter with a small jumper cable (which hasn't been working properly either).? When on battery I use a 3S 11.1V Li-Po battery.? When on mains I use 12V wall warts and have tried 2 different ones that work fine for other uses.? I have the official enclosure.? That's all I can think of but am happy to answer anything else.? Thanks in advance.

Sorry. Didn¡¯t see your name in the note. The symptoms you¡¯re describing sound like a dry solder joint. At least that¡¯s a good starting point assumption. Before looking for that I like to check the DC voltages on the op amps. Specifically you want to see about 2.5v on pins 1,2,3,5,6&7 of ICs 5,6,7&8. Also 2.5v on pins 5,6&7 of IC9, 4.9v on pins 1,2&3 of IC9 and a little less than half the input supply voltage on pins 1,2,3,5,6&7 of IC10. Please look at those voltages first and let us know what you see. That may point to a specific area to look at for solder troubles or whatever.?

I went through the DC voltage readings in section 6.4 (page 124-126) and found 2 sets of discrepancies.? The first is on IC5, pins 3 and 5 are both reading a little low.? The table has them at 2.26 and 2.28, mine measured at 1.66 and 1.69.? Not sure if that's enough of a difference to matter.? The second is much more significant.? IC10 is way out of spec.? Pin 1-3 is spec'd at 5.83, I'm seeing 10.73 - 10.81.? Pin 4 is fine.? Pin 5 spec is 4.21, I get somewhere around 10 but it rapidly decreases to under 8 in about 2-3 seconds.? Same for Pin 6.? Pin 7 spec is 5.83, I'm seeing 10.78.? Pin 8 is as expected.

I'm not sure what these means?? Is this IC blown, or is it something upstream from this IC feeding it bad inputs?? Also, when I touched pin 5 the volume instantly came back up to normal and stayed there for a few seconds.? The static sounded completely normal.? I then keyed up, which caused the static to go away but the beep was completely normal for as long as I held it.? When I take the probe off the pin, the volume instantly drops again.? IC10 appears to be an LM4562 dual op-amp.? The chip, board, and solder all seem to be fine around this part.??

Thanks Ron!? Missed your message before I posted my last bit but it sounds like I might be on the right track now eh?? Think I should resolder those pins, or based on the high voltages just attempt to replace it?

Hi Cam. Well, it's possible that IC10 is internally shorted but also possible a problem in the voltage divider made of R39 and R40 along with C24 is feeding the wrong bias into the chip to start with. If the ground side of R39 was not grounded or "grounded" through a high resistance connection, a higher voltage would appear on pin 5, and would cause high voltage to appear on the other 5 pins. So check around that area first before removing IC10. But I think you're?in the right area...

Good luck ... 73 .. .Ron

Reflowing the solder and adding a smidgen to the top of some of those pins that were a little lacking seems to have resolved the issue!? Voltages are measuring appropriately and no more loss of audio.? Thanks Ron!? 73.
