MM to AWG for QMX Coils

I messed up and used the wrong core for T501.? Being that the wire is twisted, I want to use a new length.? The manual calls for 0.60 mm wire.? Anyone know the equivalent AWG of the wire.? 22 or 23?

Thanks,
Burt?

18 AWG = 1.02mm diameter

20 AWG = 0.81mm

22 AWG = 0.64 mm

according to my calipers.

This link gives a great resource for wire specifications, including dimensions (with and without various builds of insulation):

According to this resource, 22-1/2 AWG would be closest to 0.60mm.? Good luck finding that in small quantities!? Either 22 or 23 would work, however, 22 would be more common.

Wire size is measured by the size of the conductor, not the insulation.? Various insulation types are defined in NEMA MW-1000 standard.? The insulation layers of the various types of insulation can be single, double or triple build.? There are other specialty wires that have thicker and other specialized insulation types as well.? Insulations are rated by temperature and resistance to various chemicals and environments.? MW 35-C while rated to 200 degrees C is a good insulation, however, it is difficult to "burn" off the insulation and must usually be abraded or scraped away unless other caustic methods are used.? More commonly (typical of amateur radio kits) MW 80-C spec'd insulation, rated to 155 degrees C, is easily burned off with solder temperatures.

Hi Burt,

AWG cannot be exactly "translated" to milimeters. 0.6 mm is between 22 and 23. I would use 23. When I was building my Hi-band QDX I used 0.5 mm instead of 0.6 for 20m coils - just for my comfort (it was easier to wind the higher number of turns).

Incidentally, Harbor Freight has a cheap digital caliper for $10 that does metric and standard very well. Good enough for the stuff we do, for sure.

See Assembly Manual --> Parts List --> Miscellaneous Misc (In my QMX manual Page 20)

0.33 mm (AWG #28)
0,60 mm (AWG #22)

A search of the assembly manual will find that Hans has indicated the AWG equivalent at many locations.

Good luck with the build! You'll love the little rig!
