QMX stops at "Initializing: Audio system" #qmx

Help and advice needed please. Running FW 1_00_010 in which Hans has added at least one start up message so in the case of failure it points to which aspect is having a problem.

My QMX doesn't get past the "Initializing: Audio system" message. Exactly what this means is a bit of a mystery but given it is a clue I have checked voltages around the PCM1804 (IC407), 74CBT3253 (IC402 & IC403), MS5351M (IC204). All devices have the correct Vcc or Vdd, the bias to IC402 & IC403 is 2.5V.

I can't think what the MCU might be doing in terms of initializing the audio system as this suggests it is sending some commands somewhere and not getting an acceptable response. IC407, the PCM1804 has I2S lines connecting it to the MCU and I can see that the I2S_RESET line goes high? (3.3V) when the QMX is switched on by pressing the left pot. I can also see that I2S_MCLK has a 25 MHz clock signal on it and I2S3_SD has data pulses on it. According to the datasheet this all looks like normal operation. The I2S3_SD line is connected to pin DATA/DSDR which is where it sends audio samples so it does look like the chip is sending audio to the MCU.

So, what is stopping the audio system initializing? As a long in the tooth IT professional it could be that the audio system is perfectly ok and the next step in the chain is failing but the status message is not changed before the error occurs.

Any advice accepted as I am all out of ideas.

Simon, I have exactly the same issue. Not sure if you were able to resolve your issue. I was about to post the following when I saw your message.

My situation is as follows:

Assembled the QMX (OCB ver 1.0) and did multiple checks on the board for any errors. I was able to upload firmware (Ver#1_00_014) although I had to use the jumper on the board to set the QMX in boot mode. It does come up but only up to a screen that says "Initializing: Audio System". At this point it appears to be "stuck" and won't respond to ON/OFF or any other control. Voltages appear to be correct as I do get the 5V and 3.3V coming out of the regulator boards. Not sure what to check/do next. Out of ideas at this point and any help would be highly appreciated.

Simon, Vlado,

The last time I saw this was in a post by David Walsh on 11-21-2023.

An over voltage on the 5V supply rail destroyed the analog front end of the stereo ADC chip. That chip is the most vulnerable of all that are connected to the 5V rail.

Simon, Vlado,

Hans reminded me that there is another way to trigger the referenced message.

The first batch of Rev 1 QMX boards were soldered up at the manufacturer with a CS4334 chip mounted backwards. A massive rework effort at FDIM corrected that but it was later learned that a small number of escapes occurred.? You may wish to ensure that your boards are not bearing that problem.

The stereo ADC fails that I have seen have, so far, all been in conjunction with clearly observable component failures in the 5V smps.

Hello John,

Thank You?for the update. I got the boot up issue resolved. Simon sent me an update about a incorrectly mounted and soldered 4434. Everything works now except I have no TX power when using FT8. CW works fine. Receive FT8 also works fine. I will look into it this weekend. It must be something in the TX path from the USB connector I to the DAC side.

This little QMX is a real gem! Beautiful.

OK Vladimir! Excellent news!

Regarding your FT8 no-power issue, it is probably an audio setup problem at the computer, QMX and QDX need every audio-out slider set to maximum in order to work.?

Enjoy your QMX! 72 & 73, JZ KJ4A

? thanks JZ!

This weekend I will see if I can get the QMX to work on FT8 TX.?
