QCX+: Noise heard touching trimpot during alignment

Hello,

I am in the process of setting up my newly built QCX+ and I noticed that during the alignment step, upon touching my screwdriver to the trimpot screw for adjusting "Phase HI" I hear some noise and static on top of the test tone. Is this normal, or does it indicate a problem or short somewhere?

This isn't "normal" in my experience. Does it make the noise when touched with an insulated tool as well, or just when touching with a metallic screwdriver? Regardless of that, are you able to make the adjustment and afterwards is it seeming to receive normally without noise? If that is all true, then you probably don't need to worry about it. But if that pot is noisy all the time or when you move the?rig around, then it's either a cold solder joint (most common issue) or a bad pot (not common. I've not seen one yet after over 125 QCX repairs). Good luck ... 73 .. .Ron

Hi Ron,

It only does it when I touch the adjustment screw with my metal screwdriver. I haven't had the chance to hook up an antenna just yet to see if I can recieve but it seems to go back to normal (just a little low background noise in the headset) when I don't touch the screw with anything. It essentially sounds like the tool is acting as an antenna whenever I touch the pot and is picking up various buzzes/clicks/interference in my room. It was just making the aligmnent step a little tricky, since the noises would drown out the test tone as I got it lower and lower and would make the meter jump around.. I checked and didn't find continuity between the screw and any of the legs of the pot so it's a little strange. Oh well. I'll report back once I've got everything fully setup, just didn't want to proceed if there was any kind of risk or issue.
