accurate time source

You can use a browser to view <time.is> which will give you a very accurate time. ?Even if you have to manually input the time to your rig, you would likely be close enough to the correct time to make QSOs.

Time.is is good.
Ive had issues using built in time sources for updating the pc time automatically and wondered if a lagging wi-fi connection could have caused some delay. Sometimes it works and others not so much. But setting manually to time.is has always worked for perfect ft-8 timing.

I can’t imagine that your WiFi has hundreds of ms of variable delay, as NTP will correct for fixed delay, but I suppose anything’s possible.

is the source from which many other time websites get their time.? It's NIST's own website.? Not as useful for non-USA users.

Since you have internet connection, to see time.is ...
I find JTsync.exe is really handy ... it will check the
internet time servers if you have a connection and
will force time update of Windoze ...

BUT even better, if you have no internet connection
it will AVERAGE the time offset of stations in the
waterfall and will set your pc time to match them !

Willie - yeah its kinda weird. Even if I go to clock settings and force an update it can sometimes not sync, even trying different servers. I assumed a wi-fi lag

Jim - JTsync sounds cool. Except for ft-8 I really dont care if the clock is off a few seconds.?

Dimension 4 is a reliable time sync software.

One obscure issue with time sync:

I have a cellular internet modem (T-Mobile) and it will not allow most of these time syncs, such as Dimension4, or many others, to work. It will also not allow ftp sites to work.

My work around for this is to use a Personal Hotspot from my cell phone. Even though it uses the same cell network and the same tower, this works, while the cellular internet modem does not- go figure.?

But built in time syncs in Windows and Mac OS do work fine, tho.?

I have the coffee can version of T-Mobile Home Internet Cellular Modem and
run Meinberg NTP on my machines when using T-Mobile. Thus far, NTP has
been golden.? Using Windows NTP services however is another story. Sometimes
it works, sometimes it doesn't. So I simply disable Windows NTP and use Meinberg
full time.?

Either Meinberg or Dimension 4 will work well for Windows systems, and I highly recommend the use of either one instead of the built-in Windows time sync, which frankly sucks. For Linux folks, Meinberg will work although you may need to compile before installation. I normally work with Ubuntu, which has pretty decent NTP facilities available?as timedatectl / timesyncd.?

If you have a dual-boot system like mine (Windows 10 / Ubuntu with plans to add Mint as a third OS), set Windows and Linux both to UTC as the primary time; that will save you some hassles when moving from OS to OS.

Barb, Documentation for Dimension 4 does not indicate whether it is compatible with Windows versions beyond Windows 7 and 8. Do you know if is compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11?

Steve, Dimension 4 works with Windows 10.

Steve I use dimension4 with Win10 and Win11. No problems.

My off grid computer uses BK TimeSync and a USB GPS.

I find that it works very well. I exclusively use it every time. My computer is turned on whether it is on line or completely off grid.

I use NetTime 3.14 from www.timesynctools.com on all my windows machines, no
problem. Just install it and forget its there. Seems to work, flawlessly for
me, over wired networks, Wi-Fi,networks 3G and 4G networks using mobile
routers and pocketable 'hotspots', Cannot speak for 5G, there are no 5G masts
anywhere near, nearest I believe is 75 miles away.

Linux, the sensible OS, just does it without any user intervention..
