QMX dead

I waited a couple of days to post this to get over my depression.? I used a standard 9V battery to start my QMX the first time.? The LCD lit up and I was able to load the latest firmware - yay!? But no receive - boo.? So I looked over the board carefully again and found a bad solder joint on T507.? Reflowed it and I had RX- yay! but no TX - boo.? RX sounded great in both modes on all bands. I was able to get into command on Putty and everything looked fine to me.? So I decided that maybe since I built the rig for 12V I would try that.? I turned an MFJ PS down to 11.8 VDC and tried that. Nothing happened - no LCD light, no audio, nothing.? No flash, smoke or smoke smell.? So I tried it again with the 9V battery and still nothing.? Took the rig back apart and looked carefully under magnification and I seen nothing obviously burned anywhere.

So maybe using a non-amp limited PS blew something that isn't obvious?? I'm a lousy tech so if anyone has any suggestions please talk to me like I'm a 5 year old.73, Bill NZ0T

I have to look at my T507 since mine is deaf!
Yours turned on once but no more....my tech on this thing is so far, not so hot! But I would start by seeing if that push-the-knob on left encoder actually opens and closes. I caveman on computers but this is pretty basic so I can understand! You can if'n I can!

I am trying to "rah, rah!" both of us back into the fight, you see!

Bill- This is going to be an adventure. We've all got to relax and suffer the early-adopter's blues. Mine had a factory short on the 5V regulator board...smoked upon fire-up.
I just got in replacement FETS and Bingo- It's alive. Sort of alive. Now I'm just going to watch and see what malfunctions are my hardware and what is Firmware.
I've got no S-meter, relative deafness (at least -10dB on all bands), No Semi-QSK, No sidetone level control, battery meter is confused.....but at least it is alive!?
Check your 5V regulator board (add-on board with two black FETS on it) Anything fried? Let's let the experts do their thing and distill the path to usability. Walk away and come back later..
A idea may come into your head on the loss of power issue. Bob-AB5N

One thing you said Robert "no S-meter" is true! No one gets an S-meter until Hans programs one in!
That battery icon is REAL SLOW... so both are not malfunctions! Yet....
Har, har!

Good to know Karl! Thought that might be so. The main issue is really RX sensitivity. I checked the Config this morning with Putty and
all is normal. With so many mixing signals bleeding through and the native higher noise floor with SDR, it would need to be sensitive
enough to overcome these issues. I did an A/B with my QCX Mini and although I'm happy to see the QCX is very usable, the QMX is
about as deaf as I am at 68. Funny thing, I could swear that I hear the RX background noise when I'm TX'ing on CW. It doesn't seem
to be muting. Strange. All bands look 4-5W out except 20 meters at 2.5W. My C405 was missing, so I put in a generic disk 22pf I had.
Maybe this is an issue. Unknown without a schematic. We shall see if we can get "there" from "here. 73's Bob

I tried to post a link for the schematic but it does not work...grrr! There is a link on this forum which produce great if not faint diagrams. Another on the same thread "QMX schematics" found a way to make the traces more bold. Try the search above with QMX schematic and see whatcha get.

The schematics are on the QMX page along with the Assembly manual and the Operating manual.

Did you perform a reset after all those mods ?
Sorry if you mentioned it before...
