??

---------------------

ANNOUNCING:? FLORIDA QSO PARTY (FQP) GROUP EMAIL REFLECTOR

by George K5KG

????????????????The Florida Contest Group (FCG) maintains an email reflector on Groups.io, called?[email protected].? Groups.io was developed in 2014, and has become the most advanced email group service on the Internet.? The FCG is using the Groups.io¡¯s basic service at no-cost.? This service allows for an unlimited number of subscribers, provides a Group directory and calendar, the attachment of files and photos to messages, and offers 1GB of file and photo storage.?

[email protected]?was established to support the Florida QSO Party?which occurs every April, although some subscribers use it year-round.??This email reflector is not limited to FCG members, and anyone can belong.? There are currently 83 subscribers on?[email protected].? As the 2020 FQP approaches, we expect the number of subscribers on?[email protected]?to escalate rapidly.

Anyone wishing to subscribe to the FQP email reflector may send an email request to George, K5KG at?k5kg@....? Upon receiving your request to join, George will send you an invitation to subscribe to the reflector.? When you receive the invitation, simply follow the instructions, and sign yourself up.

Here are some tips about using the?[email protected]?reflector:

1.)????When you join a reflector, go into your?PROFILE, and?enter your call sign and first name (or nickname) in the?Display Name?field.??It is critical that your Display Name and/or email address identify your CALL SIGN so we can properly administer your account.? (We have had times when a ¡°BillyBob¡± subscribed with an email address of ¡°swampbuggy@...¡±, leaving us in the dark about who he was because he did not provide a call sign.)

2.)????You can post a photo in the PROFILE.?? This is optional, but if you do enter a photo, it will appear in the Directory of all subscribers.? Typically, subscribers post their photo, but it could be a photo of their shack, antennas, etc.

3.)?????Subscribers can choose any one of these Email Delivery options

a.???????Individual Messages

b.???????Full Featured Digest ¨C group of up to 12 messages individually (rich formatting)

c.???????Plain Digest ¨C group of up to 12 messages individually (plain formatting)

d.???????Daily Summary ¨C delivered in the morning of group¡¯s messages from previous day

e.???????No Email

4.)????Subscribers can set up a Signature format to include in messages for Web or Email postings

5.)????The reflectors are not moderated, so we ask all subscribers to keep their messages related to ham radio related-topics, and suitable for reading by all age groups.? Frequently, subscribers will post for-sale, wanted-to-buy or how-to messages on the reflectors, and this is perfectly acceptable.

6.)????The FCG¡¯s old FQP email reflector?fqp@...?has been discontinued and is no longer supported.

In summary,?[email protected]?is an Florida QSO Party email reflector that the FCG operates at no cost to the subscribers.??If you are currently a subscriber, please check the DISPLAY NAME in your PROFILE to make sure it identifies your CALL SIGN and NAME.?? If you are not a subscriber, drop me an email so I can get you on board.

Tom, AJ4XM Candidate for QCWA VP

Jeff

Hi Chapter 111 members

We have important Officer Elections coming up with the March QCWA Journal release. Voting will be done online this year, a substantially less costly and easier wat to do it. For those who we do not have an Email address for, they will get a postcard in the mail with a link to get online and cast their vote.

Many QCWA members will remember me from being General Manager of QCWA a few years ago and more details are on my QRZ page.? I am running for Vice-President not because I am unhappy with the Vice-President for the last 2 years, but because I think I can bring more to the table that will benefit QCWA members. Of course, I will only have 1 seat at the table and 1 voice for these causes, but I know from discussions that other officers and board members share many of these goals. But it will take a dedicated effort to accomplish them.

I know from firsthand information that most members do not read the QCWA Journal. I want to change that so it is a ¡°must read¡± publication for most members. This includes more articles and content useful to members.

The most serious issue facing QCWA is our membership is declining. While I was General Manager, we had slight increases, but for the past few years we have a decrease of 200+ members/year. This is from a combination of factors, but mostly from the age of our membership. We need to replace members that become SK¡¯s with new members. But by the 25-year licensing nature of our organization most of those are already older Hams when they join. That is why increasing support for our youth program is so important. We must help build a new generation of Hams so there will be younger (under 50-year old) Hams with 25 years of experience to join QCWA in the future.

We need to actively recruit eligible Hams NOW that are not members and may have never considered or been approached to be a member. This can be done in person with other Hams we know, but a lot will have to be done by Email and some snail mail. And increasing publicity about QCWA will help.

When asked to join, most Hams want to know What¡¯s In It For Me (WII-FM). Of course, we have the Journal (which most do not now read) and the camaraderie of Chapter meetings (but most do not join or participate in Chapters) and the Scholarship Program. The Scholarship Program is a benefit that far offsets the cost of membership but is useful to only a small subset of members with children or grandchildren who are licensed Hams and going to College or Degree programs. We must provide additional benefits to our members that offsets the cost of membership.

Some of these Member Benefits can include discounts on equipment, services, and products. These may or may not be Ham Radio specific. I was able to do some of this while GM, but those programs are no longer in place. I have specific programs in mind for doing this. We must give members¡¯ benefits greater than the cost of membership. This will remove the main reason eligible Hams do not join and give a reason for previous members (who outnumber current members more than 2 to 1) to renew. My target is to have a $100 value for the $25 dues expense. There should be more than a $25 benefit that most members can take advantage of, something for almost everyone. This will include our members in other countries.

Here is more info from the candidate bio that will appear (I believe) in the March QCWA Journal. I really appreciate your support and will do my best to serve as your Vice-President.

I fully support the efforts led by President Ken Oelke to revitalize the QCWA and to Elmer and support Youth in our hobby. I would like to pursue restoring contact with QCWA members who have been out of touch, recruiting new members to join QCWA, developing a QCWA Podcast, developing meeting presentations for local chapters, developing a streaming QCWA meeting for those removed from a local chapter, getting future QCWA members and supporters to attend local chapters, and extending our outreach to young Hams. I would like to see QCWA recognized as THE source for Elmers.

I was first licensed in 1956 at age 12 in Buffalo, NY. But was only active for about 2 months when my parents decided to buy a house trailer and move somewhere South. We stopped for about a year in Pittsburgh to care for my ailing Aunt. I could do SWLing but no transmitting there. After many months of travel and many states, we ended up in Miami, FL. During High School I worked in local radio broadcasting and met my first real Elmer. I later got a degree in Broadcasting from the University of Florida. I worked in Radio and TV broadcasting in Gainesville, FL, Albuquerque, NM and in Miami, FL. I later went on to work in the computer and telecommunications industries and a few other fields. I was licensed a few times, but when time to renew I was so busy with work and family it slipped by me. I took the tests and got licensed a few times and in 2010 I retook the exams from Tech to Extra and really will keep renewing now. My radio interests include homebrewing, restoring, QRP, DX and Contesting. I work CW, Digital and SSB. I am developing Video Podcasts on some of those topics.

I am also an ARRL Life Member, a VE Team Leader, member of many local clubs and other organizations including IEEE and SBE.

73 & 47,
Tom Loughney, AJ4XM

Re: December Meeting - Tuesday, December 17

Hi Tom,

So sorry to hear that you have the flu. I hope you will be over it very soon. Also, thanks for letting me know that you will not be at the meeting.

Take care and feel better. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

73,

Al, N3EA?

Re: December Meeting - Tuesday, December 17

Hi Al,

I will miss the meeting Tuesday since I have the flu and and will just finish treatment Monday night. But the Dr says I will be contagious for a few more days. (Our whole house has the flu from the 6 year old on up). I would not want to come and spread germs on anyone else there. And it is really hard to eat through one of these masks they gave me to wear!

My best to all for a great Holiday season, Chanukah and/or Christmas and a very Happy 2020.

See you in January.73 & 47,
