International Space Station Visible Tonight (7 minutes!)
International Space Station Visible Tonight (7 minutes!) Folks - Good news! Another opportunity to spot the International Space Station this evening as it passes over our area in Arizona. It should be a great pass and hopefully the clouds will be minimal. It will pass about 51 degrees above the horizon! Treat your family and friends to a viewing of the International Space Station tonight. I find that even the most non-technical family member or friend gets a kick out of seeing the station as it moves across the sky at 17,150 MPH - that's 4.76 miles per second - and about 250 miles above us. If you are an amateur radio operator, take the opportunity to relate how hams can communicate directly with the ISS or through one of its transponders. The ISS will be visible for 7 minutes and should be a good viewing and becomes visible directly from the West Southwest and disappears towards the Northeast. Time: Thu Mar 14 7:24 PM Visible: 7 min Max Height: 51° Appears: 10° above WSW (from 247 degrees) Disappears: 10° above NE (toward 45 degrees) I've also attached an illustration that will help you determine how to use this information. You can watch and track the station in advance at this link: https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/sightings/view.cfm?country=United_States?ion=Arizona&city=Mesa And, something new! I've attached a chart of the actual pass. Remember, these times are based on a viewing site from the Mesa area (and within 50 miles). If you would like to generate times from your specific city or town, visit this link and follow the instructions. If your specific city or town isn’t listed, pick the closest one: https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/home.cfm The space station is visible for at least a 50 mile (80 km) radius around each of the listed locations. If you are an amateur radio operator, listen in (or work) on these frequencies: Voice and SSTV Downlink: 145.80 (Worldwide) Voice Uplink: 144.49 for ITU Regions 2 and 3 VHF Packet Uplink and Downlink: 145.825 (Worldwide) - easiest to hear UHF Packet Uplink and Downlink: 437.550 UHF/VHF Repeater Uplink: 145.990 (67Hz PL Tone) UHF/VHF Repeater Downlink: 437.800 Regards, Joe N2QOJ

Another Tech Class, 2 Days - May 4th and 11th
Another Tech Class, 2 Days - May 4th and 11th Another Tech Class has popped on my radar. Scottsdale Amateur Radio Club is hosting a 2-day class. Here's the link to the announcement: https://scottsdalearc.org/ It requires the purchase of Gordon West's Tech license manual, pre-study, and attendance on two Saturdays. Sounds like a self-study recipe with free materials from the Queen Creek Amateur Radio Club might be a competing option: http://queencreekarc.org/index_files/Page1462.htm ???? Cheers, Joe, N2QOJ

Fox Hunting - A fun way to learn about direction finding while enjoying the great outdoors!
Fox Hunting - A fun way to learn about direction finding while enjoying the great outdoors! *** Next Hunt: March 16th *** Have you heard of amateur radio "Fox Hunting" also known as "T-Hunting" or "Transmitter Hunting"? This amateur radio "sport" is very active in our area and can be a great club activity. The following is an excerpt from www.AZTHunt.com: "Transmitter hunting, or "T-Hunting," also often referred to as "Fox Hunting," is an enjoyable combination of Radio Direction Finding (RDF) techniques, orienteering, healthy exercise, fun in the fresh air, and good friends from all walks of life. AZTHunt utilizes small, low power transmitters hidden in public areas such as a large regional park and the "hunters" seek them out using easily constructed equipment along with a hand-held radio receiver. Around the world T-Hunting ranges from smaller casual hunts, such as those typically sponsored by AZTHunt, to national and international championship competitions. Additionally, T-hunting skills are often used in search and rescue work, wildlife tagging applications, and tracking down interfering signals in both professional and amateur radio communications systems. T-Hunting participants are not required to possess an amateur radio license and the skills are easily learned." "The typical T-Hunt sponsored by AZTHunt may be a larger scale "driving" hunt where multiple transmitters are located within a three to six mile radius of a starting point, or a walking hunt where several transmitters are hidden within walking distance. Driving hunts often also include the multiple transmitters of the walking hunt at a single main transmitter site once it is located, and those who prefer only the walking portion may proceed directly to the hidden transmitter area. Other options are available and we are always open to new adventures!" I strongly recommend a visit to www.AZTHunt.com to learn more about this radio sport and how you can participate or organize a sponsored event for your radio club, Scouts, students, or other group of people looking to enjoy a fun time. You will find great info and guidance on how to get started in this activity. The folks at AZTHunt use transmitters and other gear from Byonics (www.byonics.com), a long time global supplier of APRS trackers, fox hunting transmitters, and accessories located right here in the Valley. Please take the opportunity to share your fox hunting experience with us.
