RUSS Event
From: Dennis Lawrence <kf7ryx@...> Date: Fri, Oct 13, 2023 at 4:28 PM Subject: RUSS Event To: Dennis Lawrence <kf7ryx@...> Please join us for the RUSS Event (Radios Under Sun Shades) Saturday (10-14-2023) anytime between 10:00AM and 2:00PM at the Ramada behind the church building. (2228 E. Brown Rd., Mesa, AZ 85213) Several people have indicated they will be there with their portable stations. Whether you have a portable station or not, this is a great learning opportunity. Come set up your station or come get some ideas to put one together. What is RUSS? RUSS is a hands on event. The idea is to set up a station without the use of grid power. Simulate a grid down situation and operate on Simplex…not using the repeaters. Learning how to operate during a simulation is much better than learning during the actual emergency. If you have questions or need a little help with your radio, the RUSS event is the perfect time to get that help. Hope to see you there whether for a few minutes or the entire time. Volunteers Needed to Support QC Trunk or Treat 2023 2
We still need volunteers! - Town of Queen Creek Trunk or Treat, 10-21 https://www.queencreekaz.gov/departments/parks-recreation/special-events/trunk-or-treat The Town of Queen Creek has asked for QCECG communications support services for their very large event - Trunk or Treat 2023. We expect about 15,000 to 20,000 attendees. This is a fast paced event for our volunteers. The event is on Saturday, October 21st, and runs for the public from 5 PM till 9 PM. Our participation will be for a (8.0) hour shift from 3 PM till 11 PM, with volunteers ARRIVING at 2:30 PM for check in. This is an opportunity for QCECG members and any licensed local amateur radio operator that is interested in developing/maintaining/enhancing their EMCOMM communications skills. We need at least 10-15 more volunteers to cover the expected assignments. There will be some walking involved since we are shadowing event organizers. We also have a couple of fixed locations, i.e. none-to-limited walking assignments. All you will need is your HT, spare battery, headset or speaker/mike. There will be a follow-up email with more details for volunteers but, for now, we need you to consider the date, check your availability, and support our request. Please reply directly to Joe, N2QOJ, at jsammartino (at) gmail (dot) com if you can support this event. PLEASE REPLY WITH RESPONSE AT YOUR EARLIEST CONVENIENCE. Thank you in advance for your service and participation. Joe, N2QOJ for the QCECG Leadership AUXCOMM, Maricopa County - AEC www.qcecg.org

International Space Station Visible Tonight (6 minutes!)
International Space Station Visible Tonight (6 minutes!) Folks - Good news! Another opportunity to spot the International Space Station this evening as it passes over our area in Arizona. It should be a great pass and hopefully the clouds will be minimal. It will pass about 69 degrees above the horizon! Treat your family and friends to a viewing of the International Space Station tonight. I find that even the most non-technical family member or friend gets a kick out of seeing the station as it moves across the sky at 17,150 MPH - that's 4.76 miles per second - and about 250 miles above us. If you are an amateur radio operator, take the opportunity to relate how us hams can communicate directly with the ISS or through one of its transponders. The ISS will be visible for 6 minutes and should be a good viewing and becomes visible directly from the Northwest and disappears towards the Southeast. Time: Wed Oct 04 6:51 PM Visible: 6 min Max Height: 69° Appears: 10° above NW (from 315 degrees) Disappears: 12° above SE (toward 135 degrees) I've also attached an illustration that will help you determine how to use this information. You can watch and track the station in advance at this link: https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/sightings/view.cfm?country=United_States?ion=Arizona&city=Mesa And, something new! I've attached a chart of the actual pass. Remember, these times are based on a viewing site from the Mesa area (and within 50 miles). If you would like to generate times from your specific city or town, visit this link and follow the instructions. If your specific city or town isn’t listed, pick the closest one: https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/home.cfm The space station is visible for at least a 50 mile (80 km) radius around each of the listed locations. If you are an amateur radio operator, listen in (or work) on these frequencies: Voice and SSTV Downlink: 145.80 (Worldwide) Voice Uplink: 144.49 for ITU Regions 2 and 3 VHF Packet Uplink and Downlink: 145.825 (Worldwide) - easiest to hear UHF Packet Uplink and Downlink: 437.550 UHF/VHF Repeater Uplink: 145.990 (67Hz PL Tone) UHF/VHF Repeater Downlink: 437.800 Regards, Joe N2QOJ

Ever wonder about the General Mobile Radio Service, aka GMRS?
Ever wonder about the General Mobile Radio Service, aka GMRS? The folks at AZ GMRS Repeater Club, normally a private group, run a public net on Tuesdays called "Travel Tone Tuesday" GMRS 1900 Net. Begins at 7 PM at 462.550 MHz (+) PL 141.3 Hz (White Tanks). This net is open to all GMRS licensed operators. If you are not licensed, you can still listen in. Actually, if you are a licensed GMRS operator, you can use this repeater all day on Tuesdays! It's a great way to check out this great Family and Mobile radio service. It's very popular with hikers, 4X4 fans, preparedness folks, and more. The GMRS services allow the license holder and family to operate legally. I've attached a GMRS info card for your reference. Here's the full description from the Queen Creek ARC Net Calendar: AZGMRS - Tuesday 1900 Time - 7:00pm to 8:00pm Location: 462.550 MHz 141.3 (Travel Tone) Description: The GMRS 1900 Net is a general directed net with topics of interest to all GMRS Radio Users. Membership in the club is not necessary to participate in the net but all participants must have a valid GMRS License. The net is held with the National Travel Tone of 141.3 Hz. (This is GMRS lingo for setting your T-CTCSS/PL to 141.3 Hz) The net starts at 1900 Hours (Also known as 7:00 PM) and runs until all participants have had a chance to comment. It could run as late as 8:00 PM or end as early as 7:30 PM, depending on the number of participants we get. RAH, Radios At Home - Saturday, September 16th, 10 AM till 2 PM 2
RAH, Radios At Home - Saturday, September 16th, 10 AM till 2 PM This is the last RAH event of this summer season. This event is a great opportunity to test your simplex "reach" in the Valley and beyond. Radios@Home was initially introduced by Heidi K7ZAE when RUSS was sidelined due to the COVID pandemic that hit the US in 2020. It was designed to keep us all “radio-active” even though we couldn’t get out to the parks due to public area closures and social distancing requirements. These days….. Simply stated, it's the same RUSS activities but at home in the comfort of refrigeration (what some of you refer to as air conditioning). It is mostly an individual activity since it is at home but you can certainly invite fellow hams and guests to participate with you. The objective is to continue exercising our stations and skill set on a regular basis despite the Arizona heat (which some of you refer to as inferno). Operating off-grid power is still encouraged. Heidi has turned over the reins of this event to John, KI7PPW, who is well known to us as the venerable host of the Maricopa County New Ham Operator's Net on Thursday evenings and the very frequent guest Net Control Operator of the Queen Creek Emergency Group's Training Net on Sunday evenings. One very important item that has been changed is the duration of the event. To give more folks the opportunity to participate, the duration is now 4 hours - from 10 AM to 2 PM local time. That should give folks with morning commitments a chance to possibly participate in the early afternoon. Here are details for your calendars: ? When: Third Saturday of every month, from 10 AM till 2 PM ? Where: 146.460 MHz Simplex (T-Encode/Decode 77 Hz optional), 446.000 MHz and at 7.178 MHz LSB for those with HF stations. ? What: Log as many contacts as possible and please be courteous to others that wish to make contacts and move to another frequency if you are having an extended QSO. ? Why: The objective is to exercise on a regular basis our stations and skill set, operating preferably off-grid if possible. ? Who: Any licensed amateur radio operator directly and / or acting as a control station operator for non-hams. Questions? Comments? Contact John, KI7PPW, at ki7ppw@....
