Listen in ON PC/Laptop or Smart Device

Hi Folks,

Don't have a radio or scanner but you would like to listen to your ham community?

(By the way, "listening in" is an excellent way to learn how to converse on the radio while non-hams are studying for their license exam.)

No worries! You can listen to some of the most active repeaters in the Valley and beyond by navigating to one of these links with your browser. If you like what you hear, bookmark it!

You can also download scanner apps to your Android or iOS device.

The Red Cross EmComm Fall Drill 2020 ¨C Summary and Result

The Red Cross EmComm Fall Drill 2020 ¨C Summary and Result

Some observations by N2QOJ:

1. About 36 stations in Arizona participated, most here in the Valley, and only 2 stations in the Tucson area.

2. The actual program name is not Winlink, it is formerly known as RMS Express and now known as Winlink Express. Winlink refers to the worldwide network and infrastructure enabling HF, VHF/UHF email communications via PACTOR, VARA, ARDOP, PACKET and Telnet modes. Winlink supports both automated worldwide email distribution and peer-to-peer email exchange. Learn about Winlink here:

3. N2QOJ participated via VHF packet.

4. If you want more info regarding "Winlink Thursdays" mentioned in the article, send a direct email to N2QOJ at jsammartino at gmail dot com. I will be happy to send you a very detailed information sheet with links to videos sessions and presentation material.

The Red Cross EmComm Fall Drill 2020 ¨C Summary and Results (I believe this was prepared by K4WK)

The Red Cross nationwide emergency communications drill was held on Saturday, November 14, with ARES and other operators asked to demonstrate the ability to deliver digital messages using Red Cross forms to specific addresses viaWinlink. Participants were tasked with sending one message to the Red Cross Divisional Clearinghouse for their geographic area.

Only Winlink generated messages were requested. This drill was an exercise in sending messages from local sites to one of seven Divisional Clearinghouses (that is, one for each of the six Red Cross Divisions, plus Hawaii) both to practice and to demonstrate the capability of amateur radio operators across the nation to relay information in times of need.

This drill used the messaging program Winlink as the method of delivering preformatted messages. Operators were free to use any connection mode that they had available, including the variety of digital modes on HF, VHF, UHF and Telnet.

The goal was to encourage more operators to become familiar with Winlink and its associated message templates. The primary message template for this exercise was the ARC-213 found in the Winlink catalog of forms templates. This message format allows for standardized messages to be sent and allows for the messages to be easily evaluated for correctness.

The drill started at 9:00 Eastern time and continued until 18:00 local time in each time zone. Thus there was a 9 hour window for each operator to create and send his/her message.

After many hours of number-crunching by our Divisional Clearinghouse managers, the results are in: a staggering 1,750messages were sent by 1,550 amateur radio operators in forty-seven states, plus Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Canada. This is about twice the number of the very successful first Drill in Spring of 2020.

The map below shows the locations of the participating radio operators.

Our thanks to Rob Jagde, KD2GRS, of Long Island, New York for preparing this map.
For a zoomable map, go here:

The Red Cross EmComm Steering Committee will begin planning for 2021 Spring and Fall Drills soon. The very popular Winlink training and practice sessions, called Winlink Thursdays, will continue on at least a monthly basis going forward.

An important goal is to continue to raise the bar for Winlink Proficiency and Bill McFarland¡¯s (N0AXZ) Winlink Thursdays are instrumental in this.

There will be a follow-up report with lessons learned and additional information in the near future.

Great weather! Perfect for another Radio in the Park or Radio Under Sun Shade event!

You will find below a brief description of the event's objective and activities:

*What is it?* *Here's the recipe:*

- take several ham radio stations and antenna systems
- add portable power - generators, batteries, solar power
- add some experienced hams
- include an open invitation to new hams, experienced hams, and anyone else
- publish a valley wide talk-in frequency of 146.460 Mhz (PL of 77 Hz); if operating HF, 7.178 Mhz LSB
- and replicate this recipe several times over in the Valley at the same time

*What is the objective?*

- Engage in as many contacts as possible across the Valley using a VHF simplex frequency of 146.460 MHz or HF frequency of 7.178 MHz LSB while operating off grid power, If possible.

*What is the result?*

- An excellent opportunity to learn about ham radio and ham radio operators.
- A great opportunity to learn about the type of equipment available - portable, mobile, base radios, antennas, coax, cables, solar arrays, solar controllers, and more.
- A great opportunity to learn about the importance of basic emergency radio principles.
- An opportunity to actually use the radio equipment and speak to local hams and distant hams hundreds or thousands of miles away -- even if you are not a ham!

It is a hands-on learning experience that is unequaled. We have had many of these events over the last 10 years and every one of them has been a tremendous success.

The hosts of these events have one key objective - to relate the fun, facts, and usefulness of ham radio while exercising emergency communications via simplex and off-grid power.

*Where and When? (Mesa)* - More locations are possible and, if they are confirmed, an update notice will be sent out.

The event will run from 10 AM (10:00) till 2 PM (14:00).

Dennis - KF7RYX and Doug - WB7TUJ - At the present time, all event locations are in Mesa.

Dennis, KF7RYX, will host his event at the ball field pavilion behind the Stake Center at 2228 E. Brown Road in Mesa, AZ 85213 (just east of Gilbert Rd. on the north side of Brown Rd).

Doug, WB7TUJ, will host RUSS / RITP in Mesa at Emerald Park.

*If you can't visit the sites, please check in via the frequencies listed above and participate off grid, if possible.*

An update to this message will be posted later this week with a map link to all confirmed RUSS locations.
