Sticky Packet Forwarding Objectives.
Hello Everyone, and thank you for joining this group! I want to share with you what I think this group's objectives should be. 1. First and foremost, to have some fun with Ham Radio and Packet. 2. To make Packet Radio relevant again, how to do that, you ask, well the biggest thing is to stop relying on the Internet so heavily (let Winlink do that). I am by no means suggesting that we do away with AXIP but that we have an alternate path in the event of a wide area Internet outage. How do we do this? Lets start by working the problem. The Problems: 1. Propagation 2. Band space 3. Effective forwarding mode(s) 4. Mis-configured forwarding settings 4. No regional coordination I am sure there are a few more, but that's start here. Possible Solutions, Jeff KP3FT and I have bounced these problems back a forth for a while now, and Brian KA3VSP thinks that regional coordination is necessary to have a successful path. 1. Propagation: There are a few of us using 80 meters, why 80 meters, for it's NVIS characteristics. We could potentially use the same freq across the county by having stations that are 180 to 250 miles apart. Currently, Jeff and I are successfully forward on 80 meters at nighttime up to 800 miles or more if the band is decent this certainly is not NVIS. This distance makes for a slow path but works never the less. We need what I have called a leapfrog approach using 4 points from any location. At 180 to 250 miles, one station should only have to get to the next closest station, I have seen speeds 700 to 1200 bps using B1 compression and VARA HF at least 10 times faster than AX25 at 300bd at this distance. 2 & 3. Band Space: So for this one, it's if you can't beat them, join them. The bands are full of Winlink VARA HF Gateways, I have found that using VARA HF @ 500 BW you can actually inter-mix with a 2300 Winlink Gateway, and both signals get through, may be some slowdown, but it works depending on the distance between stations. So for me here on the east coast, VARA HF is my choice for a HF forwarding mode. I still have the traditional AX25 1200bd user port on VHF. 4. For this to all work, there needs dedicated nodes correctly configured for just the purpose of providing the RF backbone. This should not be a free for all and needs to be controlled. The backbone should be dedicated to US traffic only and leave all the WW traffic to AXIP. 5. For this to work, the backbone needs to be controlled with coordination regionally. The region needs to coordinate both the stations and the mode of choice for forwarding. I am sure there is more to getting this off the ground nationally, but the process has started with N3MEL-7, KP3FT-7, W9IKU-7 & KB9PVH-1 using HF VARA on 80 meters. And Brian KA3VSP in northern Delaware and I are forwarding on UHF and have been for months now. So if this interests you then I welcome your constructive comments, if it doesn't then please feel free to opt-out. Please excuse any typos! 73 de Glenn N3MEL (FRNPA) 1st Responders Network of Pa PKT:145.090 & VARA HF:3.596 WL2K:145.670 Emergency Coordinator Chester County ARES/RACES

Added IL2Pc, QPSK 600-baud 16
I added IL2Pc 600-baud QPSK mode to my setup, if anyone wants to try connecting. It's at 2000-hz center freq on the waterfall, just above the VARA HF audio. I'd like to compare it to the standard 300-baud AFSK mode, which is also running at 1000-hz center freq at the same time. I'm using UZ7HO's unpublished IL2P version of Soundmodem. I posted it on my QSL page with his permission: https://www.qsl.net/swlkp3/Packet/il2p.zip Direwolf also has IL2P capability but not sure whicj IL2P modes it has. QTSoundmodem does as well, but I couldn't get it working on my Linux machine. According to documentation, IL2P is robust with weak-signal conditions when using BPSK mode. The closest to BPSK in the IL2P Soundmodem is "V26A IL2Pc 600bd" (otherwise known as QPSK), at the bottom of it's drop-down list:

TPRFN Welcomes The Island Of Puerto Rico 15
We would like to welcome the Island of Puerto Rico to the TPRFN Network! Stations NP4JN and WP4OH have joined as our latest 24/7 Hub Stations. After Hurricane Fiona totally cut off the island's most critical infrastructure, the Ham's on the island have been working on options so if this won't happen again. Although these 2 stations are not within NVIS range, Jeff KP3FT in CNY has been working for some time now to get HF connectivity into the island. Jeff has established connections using 30 & 40 meters as the bands permit. There is also a backup AXIP link as well. Below are the current VARA HF links by station. KP3FT to NP4JN-11 on 30m 0000-2359z KP3FT to WP4OH-11 on 40m 0000-2359z Jeff will be reaching out to a few of our southern stations to see who else can also provide additional connections to the island. This is an important link for TPRFN as it will provide a needed EMCOMM connection for Puerto Rico in the event they become cut off again from the mainland. . The PR stations have also been added to the network interactive map. https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1a2IGi69o4z2HjerNOrFO73Gj0VApFj4&usp=sharing For additional information on the KP4DOG Puerto Rico Digital Operator Group Services use this link: https://www.tprfn.net/pr-digital -- -- Apologies for any grammar or spelling errors!-- 73 de Glenn N3MEL (TPRFN) The Packet Radio Forwarding Network www.tprfn.net tprfn@... TPRFN Network Station Change
There has been a change to the network so I wanted to provide an update. Gary K7EK who has been a Polling Station for quite some time had decided that he would like to become a full time Hub Station. K7EK is located in Kentucky, we will be getting Gary¡¯s info added to the website as soon as possible. Gary is also part of the NTS network and will provide an additional station for sending any NTS messages. The other NTS stations as part of the TPRFN network are listed below: Hub Stations K7EK KY N3MEL EPA (RF linked to traffic network) Polling Stations KY2D ME N3HYM MD TPRFN would like to thank K7EK and all our other participating stations and partners for their continued support! As the TPRFN network continues to build out, we are looking for additional Hub or Polling stations particularly from the center of the country and west. The goal is to build a reliable RF link from coast to coast and north to south. As these wide area storms/events happen more frequently TPRFN is here to support these affected areas by providing a portable HF EMCOMM or any isolated station digital access to Packet Radio Nodes,BBS & NTS as well as Winlink RMS and APRS sms & email. If you are interested in more info about the network or would like a presentation for your group or club please fill out our contact us form using this link: https://www.tprfn.net/contact-us or see the full site at: http://tprfn.net -- -- Apologies for any grammar or spelling errors!-- 73 de Glenn N3MEL (TPRFN) The Packet Radio Forwarding Network www.tprfn.net tprfn@... Grid Down Newbie? 8
I have never tried a VARA-HF connection to a packet BBS before and am trying out the procedure "Grid Down TPRFN Network Direct Connection Options" that was linked in this month's PKTNET instructions. I am using a licensed copy of VARA with a Signalink USB interface to a Tentec Omni 7 transceiver. I use this setup successfully with Winlink HF and with NBEMS nets running fldigi. I went through the Qterm setup procedure and linked it to VARA and my transceiver's PTT. I have tried connecting to KN4LQN-2, KP3FT-4 and KA3VSP-1 this afternoon on 7103.2 kHz USB without success. The rig keys and transmits when I run the "Connect", but none of those stations has answered my calls so far. I notice in the "station profile" section a parameter of "1500" with no explanation. Does this mean I should offset my radio frequency by -1500 Hz (7101.7)? I would appreciate any advice. -Scott N3SW-

Cc: business@... Subject: [EastNetPacket] Quarterly EastNet Conference Call Thursday 3/13/25 7 PM- all are welcome Tomorrow night at 7 PM is our regularly scheduled EastNet packet group meeting. Topics to be covered: MODERN NODE STACK BUILDING Jason Rauch K4APR has been assisting in building some TAPRN nodes in Virginia. Their methodologies have many features and principles that apply to large scale dedicated packet networks that we are used to, he published a YouTube video about the things he has been working on. This is worth a watch to get some idea of the newer more modern things we can do with node stacks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD33XNfQ-Zw The major difference between the TARPN system and our network is they do not use any internet backbones, they don¡¯t do any automated systems on their nodes and they do not have user ports. They also shy away from building node stacks on high mountaintop sites that have difficult and limited access. What Jason has built and presented here can easily be built for our network by adding another radio in each box to be used as a user port where individual operators from their home the field can connect to the network and move around and use service on the network such as BBS systems, CHAT nodes, WinLink gateways and DX Clusters. TARPN uses a modified version of G8BPQ for their node operating system. We can absolutely build modern packet node stacks with modern hardware! This type of node stack lets you interconnect regions with backbone links between sites that do not suffer from hidden node syndrome. Having dedicated backbone links makes even 1200 baud data rates work so much better. You can move more data around than you would think. Linking nodes like this in to systems like the TPRFN gateway node sites really does a not to establish viable and robust networks. While we can still use the older TNC¡¯s there has been much concern that someone who wants to start new node sites they have a very hard time getting the hardware together. IP400 updates ¨C We hope to have Steven Stroh give this update but it may be someone else. TPRFN ¨C Glenn N3MEL ¨C Updates to their project and the new gateway station expansions to the RF only BBS VARA-HF gateways. This is an exciting part of amateur radio data networking. We are bridging geographically separated terrestrial packet networks and BBS systems to be able to deliver bulletins and message traffic. This is independent of the internet backbones. They are directly support the Radio Relay International (RRI) mission. He will also give updates about how the monthly checking nets have been working and the knowledge being gained each month. AREDN - There have been some exciting updates regarding AREDN and Mark Herson N2MH will highlight those and be available for those with any questions HamGate, 44 Net and ARDC updates ¨C Charles Hargrove N2NOV will give some brief updates as well as discuss ideas about creating files to be stored on BBS systems as resources to have available should someone need documents or information and they do not have access to the internet.
