SOUTH PACIFIC APPLIED GEOSCIENCE COMMISSION
Deputy Director
Applications are invited for the position of Deputy Director in the SOPAC
Secretariat, located in Suva, Fiji Islands. Preference may be given to
nationals of SOPAC (South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission) member
countries.
SOPAC
SOPAC is an independent, inter-governmental regional organisation
established by South Pacific nations in 1972 and dedicated to providing
service to the island member countries of its Governing Council*. Currently,
eighteen South Pacific countries are members with two associate members. Its
Secretariat is currently located in Suva, Fiji Islands, and has about 60
professional and support staff, together with short term project staff.
SOPAC's goal is sustainable development and management of mineral, energy
and water resources and the coastal zone and related human activities,
reduction of human and economic losses and damage resulting from natural
hazards, efficient information technology and communication systems and
strengthened skills-base for member countries, readily available and current
information in all program areas and strengthened national capacity in the
sciences and other supportive program areas. SOPAC is an equal opportunity

Secretariat
The Deputy Director is responsible for the management of the technical
program of the Secretariat, which includes programs in Resource Development,
Environmental Science and National Capacity Development. The Deputy
Director shall also carry out the duties of Acting Director during prolonged
absences of the Director. The secretariat currently has a staff
establishment of 60 people, of whom about half are professional or technical
staff recruited internationally.
Qualifications
Applicants should have sound understanding of the Pacific Islands region and
should be capable of developing effective relationships with the member
countries of SOPAC and with other Governments and organisations providing
funding, technical and scientific support to SOPAC.
In addition, the applicants should have a degree in one of the earth
sciences and research experience in geology or geophysics, the ability to
provide technical and managerial leadership, and to lead a multidisciplinary
team effort. A commitment to the aspirations of the Pacific Islands peoples
and good health are also required.
Remuneration
An attractive remuneration package at regional levels will apply. For non-
Fiji citizens and non permanent residents, this is tax free and includes
housing and education allowances where applicable, and the appointee will be
eligible for full diplomatic privileges, as decided by the Fiji Government.
Other benefits include payments in lieu of superannuation, and medical, life
and travel insurance coverage.
Term of Appointment
The appointment will be for 3 years initially, and may be renewable for a
further 3 year contract. Selections will be made in October 2001, for
commencement of duties in 2002.
