passwords and decoder rings
Hi everyone, You should have recieved a password at the bottom of your first message from the list. If for some reason you did not, you will have to go to http://www.egroups.com and enter your e-mail address and select "email my password to me". This should resend your temporary password to your email box and then you can access the web portion of the list. On the subject of decoder rings, Im working on that too.....just about 400 more boxes of Cracker Jacks to go through ;-)... Later, Tom midlman@...

Car hauler?
Hi All, Say, does anyone around here have access to a car hauler that I could rent to get my wrecked 88 back up here from Deveks? Then, when Marc finally gets all the stuff for my new motor, I could haul the GT down in the trailer and come back with the wrecked one, then fly back down and drive my--Look out, Louis--hot rod back. Time frame is sometime near the end of the month/first of next month (I hope) Soon after that, I will have a bunch of good parts from that car to dispose of to good homes. Keep dry, Don Hanson

I am going for 14.5 & 100mph, that Euro gearing should be good for something. Last time I spoke to Louie he was having trouble getting power to the ground, something about wheels wanting to go vertical into the wheel wells so maybe i'll get in front for 2 yards before all I see are tail pipes !!! So Don whats your excuse for not making it ?, it would be fun to see you and Louie at the lights. Not many people complain about redlining in 5th (off the Dyno that is), green and envy come to mind. Whats up:
12
Hey guys, Though I'd take a minute to uppdate you all on how the project is going. For those that don't know about it, I've got an '80 MY that I bought slightly wrecked and as I closed in on getting it near done I found an '83 Euro 5spd also wrecked and decided to make the '80 into an'83 Euro, big project to say the least. Anyway the body sits as a skeleton in the garage and now it's just a matter of bolting everything into it. I've taken a week of vacation starting Monday and expect to have the interior installed, and full drive train and suspension back on the car by weeks end. All that will be left then is painting the car and during tune-up, timing belt, and fluids. I hope to have it fully running and driving by the end of May and painted by mid July.....except.... My wife Tina who is in the US Coast Guard has applied for a transfer to Honolulu,Hawaii. While this is terriffic and cool, the job comes open June12 and throws a big wrench in the 928 plans. We still don't know if she's gotten the transfer, but if it does come she thinks they will want her there 1st week of June. So now I am fighting with what to do about the shark,I figure I've got 2 options one is to stay here for a couple months, finish the shark except for paint I'll have access to hobbyshop on base there with paint booth) The second is to pack the car up and put it in storage for 3years till we get back to the mainland. I'm leaning toward storage because I'd hate to be away from my wife and daughter even for a couple months and I've been hearing horror stories about what the salt air does to car bodies there,I guess it's worse than even S Florida which I know is bad. I welcome anyones thoughts on what to do with the shark, and I'll certainly keep you all informed as to what happens with the transfer. Thanks for the bandwidth Jim Viglietta '80 turned '83 Euro

Subscription Options
2
Hi fellow listers, This is a quick note to those concerned with being overwhelmed by the volume of emails from this list. First, I don't think there will be too much traffic on this list (probably similar in volume to the 928 Owners Club list) and I expect about a max of 5 or so messages per day. In any event, there are several options available to you. Use the password supplied in the first email to access your account at the web site (http://www.egroups.com). Once you are at "your" egroup home page, it will show the lists you are subscribed to. Option 1) select digest mode to deliver one message per day with all the messages for that day in one email. Option 2) Select Web based access. This will stop the emails but you still remain subscribed to the list and can read/write messages from your egroup "home" page. Option 3) You can always unsubscribe and the re-subscribe at a later time. If anyone needs assistance in figuring out the options let me know, Thanks Tom

Shark Drag Nicknames
9
Okay, this could be really geeky, but I think it could be a lot of fun. I want to put nicknames on the backs of the Shark Drags T-shirts. Below is what I have come up with so far. I need help on a couple of names, my own included. The people with *'s are "maybe's" that haven't yet committed to race, but haven't told me to go jump in a lake either, or whom I haven't heard a response from but showed an interest at the dyno day. If anyone is not happy with their nickname, wants to change their nickname, or have no nickname on your shirt, let me know. I don't mean to offend anyone, there are no hidden connotations, I'm just trying inject some humor. Okay, here it goes: Louie "The Professor" Ott - Self explanatory, right? Terry "The Enforcer" Redinger - Terry's a big guy, I'm glad he's my friend Tom "Mongoose" Middleton - Tom is a true enthusiast, and has the racing spirit Rob "Dolby" Fossett - Rob is a car audio god Curt "Beta" Nichols - works with computers, plus Beta is a fighting fish Chris "Spitfire" Ford - its a British thing Lloyd "The Prophet" Johnson - Lloyd has an introspective demeanor and a long ponytail, kind of reminds me of a modern day prophet. Adam " " Birnbaum - help me guys, don't rip on me too badly! Phil " " Wilson - Phil is new to the group, so be kind. * Andy "Thrasher" Pope - Name just fits. His Car in for repairs, may not be ready * Nick "Goose" Daffern - Nick's a commercial pilot, doesn't know his schedule for June yet * Mark " " Rosenfield - Mark's in the restaurant biz, no response yet * Ray " " Henson - Ray does crime scene testing and investigation, he hasn't committed yet, but I'm supposed to talk with him tomorrow. I think you can get a feel where I'm going with this. Let me know if this is a good or a bad idea. -Adam Birnbaum '88 S4 A/T

Shark Drag T-shirt graphics
5
Hello everyone, I've attached a copy of the t-shirt graphics for everyone to see. The jpeg is just a scan of a template. It will be colored in on the final version. The Word file attachment is the sleeve and front left breast graphic. Let me know what you all think. Tom had suggested perhaps changing the team name to Stuttgart Luftwaffe, using the gothic type text. I'd be curious to hear any feed back on this suggestion, and would be willing to do a mock up if anyone wants to see it. I don't know if the Pac NW list supports attachments, so I tried to email as many of you direct as I could from my home computer. I don't have everyone's email address here at home, so some of you may only pick up the text of the email from the list server. -Adam Birnbaum '88 S4 A/T - "Ready to race!"

Shirt sizes please
9
Hello All, I need to know your shirt sizes for the Shark Drag T-shirts. They will be long sleeve T's. I have a Large from 928SP which is plenty big, so that is the size I will be getting for myself. Let me know what size you want. I am meeting with the T-shirt guy tonight, so I should have an estimated cost for the completed shirts for everyone. I'm curious to see how much extra the nickname screening will add, hopefully it won't be cost prohibitive. I will scan jpegs of the front, sleeve, and back graphic and email them to everyone tonight. If you have any input on any of the designs, please let me know. We will probably have about two weeks before the screens are burned, should anyone have any changes they want to make. I must say, the design looks pretty cool so far. I think everyone will like it. -Adam

Back in Town
2
Hello Adam, Chris, and all of the PACNW928 Bunch! Just recovering from serious 10 hour jet lag after a 30 hour flight home---so hopefully this will make some sense. I have just returned from four weeks in Kampala, Uganda; working on privatizing the electric power sector. Hard to believe, but it is a great place with nice people, ideal climate, great food and cheap beer. The roads are hammered, however, with massive pot holes. I did see one 924 on the road, but everything else are SUV's. We have a diesel Pajero for the project, slow as can be, but it is just about the right size to keep everyone sufficiently intimitated! Anyway, fired up the 928 today, no problems and always a joy to get the shark back on the road. Thanks for the invite to the drags, but looks like I missed it. Will be heading back to Uganda in about 20 days. Someday I will make it over to the coast. Levi Hanson

Tune Ups
15
Hi Listers, I am planning on doing some much need maintenance on my 87 S4 and need some feedback on a few items. I know most people replace the caps and rotors when doing a tune up. Im curious if anyone has replaced theirs due to cracks or rotor wear as opposed to "just because it should be done". In my experience (domestic and european 80's up), I have yet to run across a cap and rotor that really needed to be replaced and the only ones I did replace were due to moisture getting in there (also dosed it with silicone spray) so I don't know if the cap really needed to be replaced? Has anyone done the Nology wires recently (Adam - got yours yet??) I know Chris F did his and found he had to replace the ground? wires due to the holes being too small to bolt to the valve cover. Has this been redesigned? Does anyone know of a way to check the coils (87 S4). I recall something about measuring resistance. Any simple instructions out there? Just read the post on the Rennlist about the Nology wires. Any hints on replacing the passenger side coil?? And finally, does anyone have the ball joint separator (VW part I think) that I could borrow, or know of a place where it is cheaper than $100. Thanks in advance, later Tom midlman@... 87S4 97 850R Sportwagon (family hauler!!!!!)

Coil discussions
3
The recent coil discussions are interesting, I was just recently considering coils and wondering if anyone had gone to an E coil? Seems like a nice cheap easy upgrade type of item that one of the big 3 should be offering and I was wondering why such a thing had not appeared yet? By the way Ecoils are just coils that are built with an E shaped core material that completely surrounds the wire of the coil as apposed to the standard auto coil that is just a straight stick of core material with the wire wrapped around it. The benefit is that an E shaped core (actually 8 shaped) uses a core to channel all the magnetic field and so it is more efficient than the straight stick approach where the core only channels the magnetic field through the inside of the coil, but the field must find its own way through air from one end of the coil to the other. They are also potted in epoxy/plastic instead of submerged in oil, now days plastics are good enough insulators for the purpose where oil was the best solution in the old days. RSS
