Hey Nick,
Sorry to hear you won't be able to make it. If your schedule happens to open up, just show up. 8am at SIR. The nice thing about my not organizing the event itself is that I don't have to take any deposits. Last minute entries are no problem. -Adam ---------- From: Daffern1@...costs or whatever. |

Adam Birnbaum
Hey Andy,
The Pac NW Shark Drags are taking place at SIR on Sunday June 25th. We currently have 16 928's that will be racing. Our "team" is called "Stuttgart Air Force". The cost is $25 to race payable at the gate. T-shirt orders are closed at this time, although there is a chance I may be able to get a couple extra printed up without a nickname printed across the back. There will be an extra charge to cover the costs of our own trophies and prizes, I'll let everyone know what this is when I get the shirts back. I'm shooting for $25 apiece, including the price of the T-shirt. Tech inspection begins at 8am, I would try to be a little early. All spectators are welcome. This is not a private event. We will be participating in the "Hi-Tech Import vs. American Muscle" race day. There will be anywhere from 200-500 participants total. You will get anywhere from 2-5 dial in runs, depending on how many participants there are. From there, you race until you get eliminated. We will have four trophies: "Quick Draw"-fastest reaction time; "Top Gun"-fastest top speed; "Eliminator"- quickest E.T.; "King Shark" - 928 that gets furthest up the ladder; There will also be a Drag Day Poker. All participants guess what their best reaction time, top speed, and E.T. will be. I think I may have people do this after their first dial in. Who ever gets the closest on all three at the end of the day will win the as yet to be determined prize. It'll be a great time Andy, you should go for it. We are all first timers for the most part. You don't have to abuse your car. The key is consistency, not top speed. Even if you decide not to race, please come and check it out, it's always great to meet other shark owners in person. One last note on racing, if you don't go for it now, you may not get another chance. What are these drags? Do you have to race to be there? I don't think IAndy, The shark drags are going to be held in Seattle, at SIR right guys?? The looks to be a great turnout of guys running their cars as well as some not so by all means show if you can even if you don't want to run! Adam Birnbaum has organized this event as well as other great events for all us NW shark owners, Can one of you guys fill Andy in on more of the fine details?? Jim V |

Oscar,
Yes I did, bought a '79 5spd car,I'm going to make it a daily drive while I get the other one done,I really wanted a 78 or 79 do a stock resto on while the other will start to be more of a street/track car. Will you be attending the shark drags??Sundays are best to drop by my place, real busy with work this time of year. Jim V |
Re: By the way, Hi!
Jim & Tina
Andy,
Congrats on the purchase, must be a very clean car with only 38K! Hope you can make it down to the drag day on the 25th, should be a great time.As far as the fan not working it would have to be a bad viscous coupling, this can be re-filled with fluid but I'm unsure where the procedure this was posted; anyone?? Jim V |
Re: By the way, Hi!
Hey Thanks Jim!
Yeah, my car is amazingly clean. It is, dare I say, immaculate. I was really lucky to find it, because it was the exact car I wanted, color and everything. My only problem is that it has been sitting for about 15 years and so it has some issues with things just being not used. I replaced the timing belt and water pump, but other than that, i don't really know exactly what to do. What are these drags? Do you have to race to be there? I don't think I would be up for that, but I would like to meet fellow shark owners! lemme know... and thanks for the response! your pal andy 79, cockney braun! |

Am I to understand correctly?, you've bought another shark? Are you trying to compete with Roberts and Morrison? Them boys have about 5 sharks a piece! I'll be relocating to Austin, Texas soon, but I'll take a road trip and check out the erector set before I leave. Let me know when it's a good time. -Oscar 81 auto -----Original Message-----

whiring noise - update I
Adam Birnbaum
Well, the shark is in the air, comfortably resting on 4 two ton jack
stands, with a floor jack under the rear cross member and a floor jack under the oil pan. Pretty stable. I removed the front "clutch housing" cover and noticed something interesting. There appear to be 2 hex studs bolted to the drive gear. They must be about 3/4" tall. Any idea what these are for? Are they for balancing purposes? It appears that they may have cut notches where they came in contact with web castings in the upper bell housing. It's possible that the bell housing was machined with these notches, but I find it unlikely. It looks like there are friction marks where the notches are. The studs themselves appear to be intact. Maybe a source for the sound? I unbolted the front drive shaft collar just to see what would happen. The drive shaft immediately shot 4mm forward (or the crank shot 4mm backward). I retorqued the collar and started the car. The whirring noise was still there, but had decreased in intensity by a good 75%. Very curious. There is a large ring gear sandwiched between the drive gear and the flywheel, which I am a little puzzled over. The drive gear is bolted to the flex plate and is where the starter engages right? I initially assumed the large ring gear was for the "Park" mechanism, but that wouldn't make sense. Because its bolted to the flywheel, the big ring gear would have to turn even when the car is in "Park". So, what is it? It also blocks access to make the space measurements between the drive gear and flex plate as noted in the manuals The giant ring gear It isn't shown in any of the picture diagrams of the front drive plate unit in the torque tube section of the manuals. Probably a silly question, but any have a quick answer? I'll be scouring my manuals tonight for an explanation. I'm going to proceed with lowering the transaxle, and will attempt to run the car with the rear of the torque tube disconnected to see if the sound is from the tranny bearings. Don't know how for I'll get on this tonight, but I figure I still got a good 3 hours of life left in me. -Adam Birnbaum '88 S4 A/T |
