Gilmour Space announces launch window for Australia’s first sovereign orbital rocket
For those who are interested in following Australia's Space program. Al. -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Gilmour Space announces launch window for Australia’s first sovereign orbital rocket Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2025 04:21:05 +0000 From: Gilmour Space <no-reply@...> Reply-To: no-reply@... To: al72@... The countdown is on... Countdown to first Australian orbital rocket launch Gold Coast & Bowen, Australia – Gilmour Space Technologies has announced a launch window starting 'no earlier than' March 15 for the maiden flight of Eris, the first Australian-designed and built rocket aiming for orbit. The news follows final airspace approvals from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and Airservices Australia, clearing the last regulatory hurdle before launch. It also marks the culmination of years of innovative R&D and manufacturing by the Gold Coast-based company, which developed the Eris launch vehicle and Bowen Orbital Spaceport in North Queensland. Gilmour Space made history in March last year when its Bowen spaceport was granted the first orbital launch facility licence in Australia, and when it secured the country's first Australian Launch Permit for Eris TestFlight 1 in November. Now, with airspace arrangements finalised and mandatory notice given to the Australian Space Agency, the company is preparing for liftoff. "This will be the first attempt of an Australian rocket to reach orbit from Australian soil," said Adam Gilmour, co-founder and CEO of Gilmour Space. The company is backed by private investors including Blackbird, Main Sequence, Fine Structure Ventures, Queensland Investment Corporation, and superannuation funds like HESTA, Hostplus, and NGS Super. With the mid March window fast approaching, Mr. Gilmour highlighted a few key points for those less familiar with rocket launches: Firstly, it's important to understand that delays or 'scrubs' are a normal part of rocket launches. These can last anywhere from hours to days, or even weeks, and are often caused by weather conditions, technical issues, or other factors. "Safety is always the top priority. We'll only launch when we're ready, and when conditions are appropriate," he said. Secondly, the first launch is always the hardest. Reaching orbit is a highly complex engineering challenge, and every successful rocket company has faced setbacks in their early attempts—SpaceX, for one, did it on their fourth attempt. "It's almost unheard of for a private rocket company to launch successfully to orbit the first time. Whether we make it off the pad, reach max Q, or get all the way to space, what's important is that every second of flight will deliver valuable data that will improve our rocket's reliability and performance for future launches." Thirdly, this is the road we must take to build sovereign space capability that will be critical for Australia's future. Launching Australian-owned and controlled rockets from home soil means more high-tech jobs, greater security, economic growth, and technological independence. "Only six countries in the world are launching regularly to space using their own technology, and Australia could soon be one of them." Finally, he said: "I want to thank our incredible team at Gilmour Space for all their hard work and dedication in getting to this critical first flight. Whatever happens next, know that you've already made history—we now build rockets in Australia. And this is only the beginning." Visualising the proposed Pines Wind farm in Google Earth Pro
Cross-posted from the OCSN Facebook group for OCSN member who don't use Facebook: You may have noticed that last week the developers of the proposed Pines Wind Farm released a candidate layout for the facility which comprises 250 wind turbines (actually 242 shown on the map they provide), for an overall nominal power capacity of 2,000 MW. That is a very large wind farm, possibly the largest so far proposed for Australia (there are larger ones in China but not many other places). The Pines Wind Farm developers are offering to show residents what such a wind farm would look like from their home or property, using AR (augmented reality) software on a tablet computer. That's OK but access to that is obviously a bit limited and the accuracy of the visualisations is unknown. Alan Sheehan and I thought that there is a role for OCSN to provide an impartial, evidence-based alternative (or adjunct) to that which is easier and more convenient for community members to access. We have been working with Professor Jim Palmer, a US-based researcher who has been developing better methods for visual impact assessment of wind farm and other renewable energy developments, and he suggested the use of 3D models viewable using the free Google Earth Pro software . He generously gave us permission to re-use instructions he developed for doing that. Over the last few days, we have created accurately-scaled 3D wind turbine models in the 242 locations proposed by the Pines Wind Farm developers, together with detailed instructions on how to correctly view them using Google Earth Pro to get a reasonably accurate impression of how the proposed Pines Wind Farm might look from various locations -- in fact, from any location, such as your home or property. The simulated views are not perfect, but we think they are adequate, and they are accurately scaled -- they neither exaggerate or underestimate the visual impact of the proposed wind farm from any arbitrary location (if you follow the instructions). As such, we think they are consistent with the goals of OCSN of not taking a position for-or-against the wind farm development proposals, but rather seeking to provide principled, scientifically-valid information about their potential impact - in this case, their potential visual impact. All of this is described in detail on a web page at https://oberon-citizen.science/pines_gep_model_oct_2024.html This page has not yet been publicised and it not yet linked to the main OCSN web site menus. Before drawing wider attention to it, we would very much value your feedback, over the next few days, on this web page and the 3D models it provides access to -- both suggestions for improvements, and whether you think this is helpful in informing the Oberon community in an impartial manner. Reply to this message or email me directly at tim.churches@... if you prefer. I'm also working on a detailed set of visual impact assessment metrics for the Pines Wind Farm proposal, using the methodology developed by Jim Palmer and explained in the series of blog posts I put up on the OCSN web site a few weeks ago, using the proposed Palings Yard wind farm as an example. However, that will take a bit longer since there is a large amount of computation required. Regards, Tim Churches

Nominations for OCSN Committee Members 9
At the meeting on Friday, September 20, 2024 we plan to elect office bearers for OCSN. There are 7 positions on the committee: President Vice President Secretary Treasurer and at least 3 ordinary committee members. The constitution also requires written nominations 7 days prior to the elections. Given we are brand new as an organisation, it is not reasonable to enforce the 2 person nomination plus consent from the nominee in writing (as per the constitution), so we ask you to consider being on the committee and to self nominate for up to two positions you are interested in on the committee. No one can hold more than 2 office positions, hence the limit of 2. This at least will comply with the nominee consent part of the constitution. Please could you self nominate to the oberon.citizen.science@... email address by midnight tomorrow September 13 (Friday night). Apologies for the short notice, but we're doing our best to get used to and meet the constitution. If we don't get enough nominations, then we'll have to sort out nominations on the night for the outstanding positions which will be appointed 7 days later if only one candidate, or will be elected at the next meeting. Thanks, Al.

Meeting Friday 20th September, 2024 2
Next OCSN Meeting: Venue: Oberon Community Centre (Library Building) Date: Friday September 20, 2024 Time: 4:00pm till 7:00pm Agenda will be set and distributed Friday 13th September via email and FB group. Suggested Agenda Items can be discussed here on either the email group or the FB group. Initial suggestions are (largely based on the constitution): Agenda 1. Meet members (particularly for anyone who wasn't able to attend the first meeting). 2. Elect Committee members: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, 3 non-office committee members. Do we need other officers? e.g. Media/publicity officer, etc. I suggest they would take the place of the non-office committee members as defined in the constitution. Once the committee is elected, the committee shall take over the running of the meeting. 3. Fees. What should be our joining fee? What should be our annual membership fee? Debate and vote. I suggest the fees be payable at a future meeting once the committee is in a position to organise things like bank account, receipt book, record keeping, etc. 4. Meeting times and types: 4.1 Face to face or in person meetings: How often? Venue? (confirm Oberon Community Centre or other), Timing (i.e. day of week and time of day)? Duration of meetings (required for bookings)? 4.2 Online meetings: What media e.g. Zoom, Teams, etc? Regular or ad-hoc? If regular: How often? Timing? Purpose (particularly if different to a normal meeting)? Working meetings for sub-groups of members for the planning and execution of specific projects can be organised by the those sub-groups as required. What else do we need to add to the agenda for the meeting? Thanks, Al.
