invitation to participate in groundbreaking webinar on uncontrolled crossings August 15. . .
Hi everyone! Jolene and I are planning to record a webinar on uncontrolled crossings with 15-20 O&Ms starting at 6 o'clock (eastern) August 15, and invite you to participate if you are: willing to actively participate with camera on and be recorded (this will be edited and anything that you don't want recorded will be removed) You do NOT need to know anything about how to deal with uncontrolled crossings. Just like the Cane Workshop that Rebecca Sheffield and I did which some of you participated in, we plan to edit and post this webinar with a quiz for O&Ms to get ACVREP credit. We plan for this to be a FUN webinar where the participants are engaged so we can create a recording to help folks get a better understanding of the concepts O&Ms need to know to prepare their students for uncontrolled crossings. The live webinar may take 2-3 hours to give us all the raw footage that we need, BUT you can take a break whenever you need it and even leave early if necessary. The recording will be edited and we will remove any video of you that you don't want included. So if you'd like to have some fun with Jolene and me and maybe learn a BUNCH while sharing your insights and wisdom and raise questions like the O&Ms did at the Cane Webinar to help your fellow O&Ms learn, please contact me. O&M Book
Hello all, I was speaking with another O&M friend of mine and we were both swapping funny stories that had happened recently with students we work with. She suggested it would be fun to put together a book of all the stories people have of being an o&m as well as stories they have from their clients (with permission of course). If you are interested in participating in this project, please contact me off-line (my email is mathesonw18@...) or Julie Parker (her email is julienne.22.tvi.coms@...). Thanks, Whitney Matheson

Continuous Tactile path 2
Hi Friends, I am checking on how to advise a commercial shopping center to place a continuous tactile path along a painted path in a dark parking garage that is the only pathway from the front to the back of a building. It so happens that a blindness support group meets there. I have no experience with a continuous path, just truncated domes/tactile mats at blended curbs so any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated. Aloha Amy

My concern for AER 9
HI guys! I had hoped to share my concern with AER members but apparently I'm not getting through to the AER listserv so I'll share it with youns (Pittsbughese for "y'all"!) - I know a lot of you are AER members. One of my biggest concerns in this world is the increasing division among people, an "us vs. them" approach with factions trying to energize us with fear or anger (in what Arthur Brooks calls on the national level the "outrage industrial complex") to pressure us to choose and identify with one side or the other. It is toxic and leads to dysfunctional organizations, where people can't work together and don't trust each other. This is what is going on with our government. I'm very concerned that our AER leadership is going down this path. As I understand it, several months ago AER's Executive Director, Lee Sonnenberg, told the board he would resign rather than work with President-Elect Mark Richert. After the board voted not to remove Richert, Sonnenberg reached out directly to the membership, setting in motion a campaign to support him by removing Richert. This is no way to run an organization. If a board member needs to be removed, that is a serious issue that should be carefully considered on its own merits. It should be separate from any considerations of whether the board member's removal will satisfy the Executive Director's preferences. If Sonnenberg's resignation is reconsidered and he remains as Executive Director, I'm wondering what happens if the board does not agree with him on another matter, or there is someone else he can't get along with. Will he again appeal directly to the members to take his side, further dividing us? In my opinion, an Executive Director who asks the membership to choose sides is divisive and not a good fit for an organization whose mission is to work together to find common ground and consensus to "speak with one voice." ¡ª Dona ¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª Dona Sauerburger, COMS Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist www.sauerburger.org On 06/20/2024 9:12 AM EDT AERBVI <memberservices@...> wrote: Dear AER Members, The Board of Directors of the Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER) held a special meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the future leadership of the organization. The meeting resulted in a vote to remove Mark Richert as president-elect, which also means he is no longer on the Board of the organization. The Board did not make this decision lightly. Only after receiving a significant amount of input from members and other constituents of AER did we take this action. The Board will now begin to evaluate new candidates for President and President-Elect. Olaya Landa-Vialard, AER¡¯s current president, has agreed to extend her term until a new President is chosen. While change is always difficult, the Board is enthusiastic about the future of AER. We look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming International Conference in July. Tips on keeping white cane clean.
Hello everyone, I use a white cane specifically one by Ambutech. It is the one with finger guards, and it also has the marshmallow rolling tip. What are some tips that you can give me on making sure that the tip lasts as long as possible? What is the best way to keep it clean? Any tips would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much. tactle Maps 2
Designing Tactile Maps: an Introduction for Everyone Hosted by New York Public Library with the generous support of the American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults Thursday June 27, 5;00 to 7:00 PM Eastern Maps matter, and maps you can read by touch are a valuable tool that blind people use to plan trips, navigate complex spaces, understand intersections, understand geography and more. What makes a tactile map a pleasure to read and practical to use? Spoiler alert: it's often different from what works for a visual map. Begin or continue your tactile map-making journey with renowned tactile designer Naomi Rosenberg of the Media and Accessible Design Lab at the LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco. This workshop will cover key map vocabulary, questions to ask yourself while designing, how to use labels and symbols, how to choose what appears on the map, and much more. The session will cover techniques that sighted and blind designers can use: no specific equipment or prior experience is required. After the session, you'll be ready to take on the challenge of designing your first tactile map, and interested patrons can sign up for a small-group map-making challenge that focuses on New York City parks and landmarks! This online workshop is open to everyone: thanks to the American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults for making it possible, and as always thanks to the experrts at the MADLab! Webinar Uncontrolled crossings RISK ASSESSMENT June 12 @ 11:30 AM Eastern 6
Hi everyone! The second in our series of free webinars for the South Africa Low Vision Centre of Learning is next week, Wednesday morning June 12 at 11:30 AM Eastern. The link to register is at the end of this message. It will be recorded and posted for free afterwards. In this webinar, we will present different situations to 3 volunteers and guide them through the process of 1) recognizing if they can be confident in that situation that it will be clear to cross whenever it's quiet and 2) if not, analyze what the risk of crossing would be, knowing that when they start crossing, there might be a vehicle approaching that would have to stop for them. VOLUNTEER STUDENT??? If you'd like to be one of the "students" please contact me. You'd join Jolene or me for about 10 minutes the evening or morning before the webinar to develop a good intuitive understanding of "your" 7-second crossing time.
