Re: Guide Technique Option
开云体育Good day!? Ramble tag is available from the RNIB () but, stateside, at Carroll Center for the Blind.? , for $35.00 ( I think.) ? This may be a good solution for some, but the only issue, the Ramble tag, might have, is the guide needs to put it on, and return it to the individual, so one may need more than one, to reduce cross contamination.? ? ? Adaptive Guiding Techniques:? ?????? Everyone wears a mask! ??????? Use a voice guide ??????? Place hand on guide’s back. ??????? If shopping, use the cart between you and the guide. ??????? Use a backup cane for guide to hold one end & person holds the other end. ? Cane & guide dogs need to be used with most of these techniques.? These “adaptive guiding techniques” offer less protection than standard guiding techniques. ? Carry extra masks and gloves to offer to guides. ? Always use hand sanitizer after any contract or entering or exiting a location. ? Carry a re-sealable plastic bag for trash disposal of gloves and masks to dispose of items, upon return home. ? Is there a different way to do the trip?? (On-line shopping, friends or families, etc., while COVID19 social distancing guidelines are in place?)? ? Be prepared with a plan, if one needs a guide due to COVID restrictions to get around a place, have your list, call ahead to find out what are the COVID changes in your business, etc., so you are prepared with work arounds to get your errands done. ? ? Meg Robertson COMS MA Director, Orientation and Mobility Department Massachusetts Commission for the Blind 600 Washington St. 3rd Floor Boston MA 02111 617-626-7581 ? ? ? ?I'm reading that article right now ? it could deal with the stigma of physically touching another person by having this bit of Velcro and a nylon strap acting as an intermediary. Going forward this could be good for students who are afraid of touching peple. ?19 pounds seems like a lot I wonder if it's available through MaxiAIDS.? ? Doug Gilbert

Guide Technique Option
开云体育Was reading an article from Forbes on the challenges people who are blind and visually impaired are experiencing with re-opening across the globe, ? In the article, it lists an option for Guide Technique called The Ramble Tag, ? Might be something to consider for Staff who are doing lots of guiding throughout their workday as a way to minimize direct body contact. ? |

SOMA 2020 O&M conference going "live" virtually!
开云体育The
Southeastern O&M Association (SOMA) conference was scheduled for December
12-15, 2020 in Tampa, Florida, but agency/state budgets are making it hard for
many O&Ms to come.? But will that stop us from having the best
conference EVER?? NO WAY!
?
THIS YEAR WILL BE HISTORIC!
We are planning a virtual O&M conference that will be “live” – you’ll
hardly believe you aren’t there in person!? We’ll have concurrent sessions
(all interactive!), meet & greet breaks, even vendors at their “tables”
eager to meet you – everything you expect at a conference but the snacks (AND
the travel expenses)!
?
CALL FOR PAPERS
We encourage you – yes, YOU! – to come share your ideas and put together a
proposal to present at this historic, first-ever, interactive online SOMA
conference.? We especially welcome those of you who are practitioners
and/or have never presented before (or never presented on line before, or made
it interactive)!? We plan to support our presenters with tutorials, provide
practice sessions and technical support.?
?
Following our tradition of getting participants out of their seats (SOMA
was the first O&M conference to have “Feet-in-the-Street” sessions!), all
the sessions will be interactive for at least part of the time.? The Call
for Papers has some ideas for how you can make your session interactive, which
may inspire you to come up with some ideas of your own!
?
The Call for Papers is posted at – the
deadline is just a few weeks away, so put your thinking cap on!
?
REGISTRATION:
We are exploring options and figuring out the costs for the platform and
technical support, captions, and related services.? Since we are nonprofit
and have no need to raise funds to support our programs, we expect the cost per
person to be very reasonable.
?
Updates and news will be posted on our website :

When
a toddler needs cane arc safe mobility - she needs it all the time. Start with a
tool that fits her developmental abilities aka a pediatric belt cane. Wearing
the cane arc builds confidence and promotes complete understanding of the
necessity of cane arc to the wearer. Grace ?
