The Great Shakeout 12
First of all, I would like to congratulate all of you who participated in last night's Net. After a few minutes of troubleshooting, we were able to get 3.5 walkie-talkie (WT) operators up and running: Eagle361, Eagle368, WingedFoot2101, and Carnoustie127! We are officially live. So, now what? The Great Shakeout by Fire Chief Dave Cosgrave is what's next. It is scheduled to happen on October 10, 2020 between 10:00am and 12:00pm. For more information, please visit: https://www.coastsidecert.com/ We will be running a simulated earthquake disaster. Basically, we will be attending the Chief's zoom meeting (invite TBD). At around 10:00am, a simulated earthquake will occur. This is where we come in. We will: 1. duck under a secure structure and ride it out. 2. assess ourselves (and our family) that we are okay. 3. assess our home and determine whether or not it is safe. 4. turn on our WTs and tune to CH2. 5. GO OUTSIDE and assess our neighborhood for damages and emergencies (this will be scripted). 6. report your findings to Net Control (to simplify, I will be Net Control). Do this OUTSIDE for the best reception possible for our WTs. 7. if possible, meet at our rally point (lake bench). 8. relay reports to the Emergency Operations Control (EOC). I will do this with my ham radio. 9. relay back messages from EOC to you (if any). 10. repeat Steps 5 - 9 for other OC neighborhoods that we did not cover. 11. do this as quickly, calmy, and effectively as possible. If we cover all of OC, then that's GREAT! If not, then we will cover what we can. The goal is to get communications up throughout the entire Coastside Region and to convey messages successfully from you to the EOC and back to you. Some notes to ponder: 1. We cannot cover the entire Ocean Colony with just 4 people in 1.5 hours. 2. Ideally, we should have 2 groups of people at the Rally Point: a HT Net Control + scribe and a Ham Radio Operator + scribe. That's 4 people! Realistically, we need a WT Net Control and a Ham operator (2 people). More than likely for this event, the ham operator will also be the WT Net Control unless we can have more participants. Being a CERT is a plus. 3. You don't have to be an adult to participate. You just need a WT! Are you married? Got kids? Do you have a pet that can operate a radio or write? You can be a kid with a radio and a bike/skateboard/etc. You can be an adult with a bike and a WT. You can be a senior with a WT at the window on at the front porch. You can even be a senior with a skateboard and a WT at someone else's window! It would be super to have a spouse/partner/child scribe for us. 4. Not all requests will be fulfilled by EOC. For the most part, we will have to fend for ourselves. That's when it's time for our Community Emergency Response Team members (CERTs) to shine. We have 2 CERTs in our Net now. Our CERTs will address most of our concerns. 5. I am open to suggestions. Feel free to throw an idea or two in the mix. 6. We only have 3 weeks to prepare for this event. When the time comes, ready or not, it will be "GO TIME". 7. We will do 2 debriefings: one immediately after the event and one during the following OCEAN WT Meeting. 8. I will get our scripts ready and hand them out. We only have 4 operators at this moment. So, I will prep at least 4 scripts. I will have them ready this week. 9. Rolls might change on-the-fly. Be prepared for anything. 10. Remember, our primary goal is to establish communications. Try not to be a hero and enter a burning house to save a neighbor or a pet. We need everyone to be on their WTs. Please post your questions and comments to this thread. -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator

Minutes from the 9/21/20 Net 3
Net Control: Eagle361 Dennis Checkins: Carnoustie127 Trish Traffic: Homework due THIS FRIDAY. Objective: Determine how many houses you can inspect within 45 minutes. This will determine if you have enough time to inspect your neighborhood. If so, we can plan on inspecting adjacent neighborhoods. Task: 1. Step outside your house. 2. Visually inspect each house in your immediate neighborhood (e.g. Eagle Trace Drive loop for me). Check each house from the street (right, middle, left, next). - See how many houses you can check within 45 minutes. - If you complete this task in less than 45 minutes, note how long it took you to complete the task. - If you did not, note the number of houses you were able to inspect. 3. Email your report to me at kn6ipe@.... - How many were you able to cover? - Did you do this on-foot or did you use a vehicle? - Were you alone or did someone assist you? Extra: If you complete your task early, you may explore your next adjacent neighborhood (e.g. Bayhill for me). Count how many houses you can inspect within the time remaining. Please remember to email your report by Friday, 9/25/20, at 7PM. 73, Dennis -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator

Our first walkie-talkie net 7
Hi everyone, I hope you enjoyed your weekend of fog a sun. You should have figured out your radios by now. If not, email me ASAP so we can get you up and running. We will have our first radio net this Monday at 7:30PM sharp. It will be a more structured meeting and you can expect our nets to follow the same format from here on out. After check-ins, we can open up the net for anything you want to talk about. I expect to be done in 15 minutes or less. Please review the Welcome doc in Folders regarding radio etiquette. I hope to hear from all of you then. -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator

Richard Lotti
Hello Everyone, Thank you all for all your efforts. I know everyone is busy. I also know that we all see the value in doing what we do: to matter and make a difference when everyone else stays silent. It is rare that someone comes along and notices the efforts of a small but determined team. Richard Lotti is one such person. He knows the value of having a prepared neighborhood and he has chosen to step up and do something about it (just like us). This year, Richard Lotti is a candidate for Board of Directors at the OC HOA. When it's time to vote, I hope that you remember the name Richard Lotti. Help me spread the word. Let your neighbors know. -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator

Our Next Radio Check 7
We will be conducting another radio check session tomorrow night, Monday, 9/7/2020, at 7:00PM on CH9. The Calendar says 7:30PM, I know. But, we might need a little bit of time to make sure everyone is up and running. If we have some time left afterwards, we can open up the Net for a little Q&A. -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator

Our first dry run 11
Is everyone free this Monday evening at 7:00? I would like us to have our first informal radio check on Monday, 8/31/2020. If this in not a convenient time, please let me know by responding here. I picked Monday night arbitrarily. If all can make it, please: 1. Make sure your radio is charged. 2. Tune your radio to FRS CH9 at 7PM. 3. I will begin talking then. Please remember your handle: you will be know as your street name and house number (e.g. Eagle361). We do this to protect your privacy as we are going to be using a public frequency. If for some reason, I am unable to hear you but someone else can, that person can relay your transmissions for you. If nobody can hear you at all, shoot me a message here. I will be standing by with my laptop. We will not have an agenda other than us trying out our radios to see if we are heard. The net (radio meeting) will be open for some Q&A. You can present your questions and concerns then. The net should last less than half an hour. I hope to hear from you all then! -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator

You can sign up in advance for the Zoom meeting here. -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator

Your CALLSIGN 4
Radio/Resource Networks (Nets) are organized, orderly communications between radio operators meant to practice or support emergency situations. Each radio operator has a call sign. For the Coastside: Net Controller call sign: Neighborhood name + ¡°Control¡± (ex: Ocean Colony Control) Individual call sign: Street name + house number (ex: Eagle361). Vision: Our neighborhood hams will monitor the FRS Net and, if necessary, will communicate via the Ham Net to first responders. Note: You may need to go outdoors for better reception. -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator

Radio Etiquette
Listen before you speak. Is the channel clear? Think about what you are hearing. If you have time, write out your message before pressing the PTT button. Use the 5-second rule. Speak for five seconds max. If you can¡¯t say it in 5 seconds say ¡°Break¡± and pause a few seconds to listen for anyone else and then continue again with call sign. Wait for a response to your call. Unless it is a life-threatening emergency, wait for 10 or 15 seconds or so before you call again. The person you are calling may have heard you but is dealing with other distractions. Acknowledge a call out to you ASAP. Use plain English; avoid jargon and abbreviations, 10-codes Do not provide personal info on air (no victim names, etc). Speak at a rate that allows the writer to keep up. -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator

How to use your walkie-talkie
There will be a webinar on September 3 from 6:30PM to 7:30PM hosted by Jim Williams. It will cover the basics on: how to configure your walkie-talkie how to operate your walkie-talkie radio etiquette It will be centered around the GTX1000 but the general ideas of radio operation applies to all walkie-talkies. You do not have to be CERT-certified or have an amateur radio license to operate a walkie-talkie. If you have multiple walkies at home, it might be a good idea to invite your family member to join as well. The suggested radio kit includes two radios. So, the information you will learn can also be used during your private adventures. Please sign up for the webinar here. -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator

Welcome to OCEAN
Hello Everyone, Thank you for joining the Ocean Colony Emergency Action Net. There are three things that you should check out since it's your first time here: 1. Messages - this will be out main information bank. Check here first for updates. 2. Calendar - we will track events here. 3. Files - any downloadable documents will be found here. The one piece of equipment that you will need is an FRS walkie-talkie. If you have one already, please familiarize yourself with how to operate it. If you would like to invest in one, I suggest getting the Midland GTX1000. It has all the functions you will need and the power to reach the entire community. Now, please take the time to check out Messages and the Calendar to catch up. -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator
