Tips and Tricks for Using the Midland 1000 Walkie-Talkie

Hi Ocean Colony Walkie-Talkie Users--
?
I thought it might be helpful if I wrote down a few key points relating to how to use the Midland 1000 WT (walkie-talkie) for emergency communications here in Ocean Colony.
?
1. Turning the WT On.? You do this by turning the POWER/VOLUME knob on the top/left of the radio just slightly in the clockwise direction.? Turning it farther clockwise increases the Receive volume for you.
?
2. Checking the Receive volume.? To check the Receive volume your radio is set for, press and HOLD the MON/SCAN key on the front of the radio for a couple of seconds.? This will turn off the Squelch control on the radio, and enable you to hear the volume at which your radio is set to receive.? To increase this volume, turn the POWER/VOLUME knob further clockwise.? When you are done, briefly press the PUSH to TALK key on the left edge of the radio.? This will engage the Squelch again, silencing the static you normally hear on an empty channel.
?
3. Selecting the Proper Channel. To select the channel you want to use, first press the MENU key briefly. This will cause the Channel number on the display to flash.? To change this to the number of the Channel you want to use, press either the UP-ARROW or DOWN-ARROW key on the front of the radio.? When you have the Channel you want, press the PUSH to TALK key to confirm that Channel.
?
Coastside CERT/Ocean Colony uses Channel 2 as its normal frequency.? In the event that Channel 2 is not usable, our back-up is Channel 9.
?
4. Setting the Transmit Power Level for Your Radio.? The Midland 1000 radio has three power levels--Low, Medium, or High (L, M, or H).? We routinely use the (H) power setting.? To set the transmit power level, press the MENU key several times, until "Pr" (for "Power") appears in the display.? Then use the UP-ARROW or DOWN-ARROW keys until the "H" appears just to the upper right of the Channel number.? To return to regular operation of the radio, press the PUSH to TALK key briefly.[NOTE: If you are using Channel 9 on your radio, the power level is set automatically to "L".
?
5. Keying Your Radio.? When you press the PUSH to TALK key on the left side of your radio to transmit, first push(and hold down) the key, and then wait a second or two before you speak.? Otherwise, if you start talking too quickly, your first words may be cut off, and not heard by others.? It may also be a problem if you don't keep the PUSH to TALK key pressed down formly while you talk.? This key can be a little "sticky," and pop back up while you're still talking, this causing your words to be lost."
?
6. How Long Will One Battery Charge Last on the Midland 1000? The NiMH battery pack that came with your radio will probably last for several weeks on one charge.? This assumes you mostly use the radio to Receive (say 80%), with limited time (about 20%) on Transmit.? To be safe, put your radio (or radios) in their plugged-in charger for about 12 hours every month or so.? Do NOT leave your radio/s in a plugged-in charger continuously, since this will over-charge (and ruin) them.? I did just this, and had to use the link below to order new battery packs for my two radios.
?
If you're very concerned about extended operating time, you might consider buying additional battery packs for your radio,? A pair of battery packs for the Midland 1000 can be purchased from Amazon , for about $20.00
?
When you put your radio/s in the charger, a red light comes on to indicate "charging" status.? However, no green light comes on to indicate the battery/s are fully charged.? Just follow the directions above, and leave your battery/s on "change" for about 12 hours.? That will be enough to bring them up to full charge (three little bars in the "battery" icon that shows in the window of your radio).
?
Happy operating,
?

EVAC Drill on July 31, Saturday, at 3:00PM

EVAC DRILL

By Dennis Tiu, Ocean Colony CERT Lead

July 31st, 2021

?

OVERVIEW:

San Mateo County has issued an evacuation order (EVAC) for Half Moon Bay and Coastside CERT has been activated to assist with the evacuation.? Ocean Colony CERT (OC CERT) will collaborate with Ocean Colony Emergency Preparation Team (OCEPT) to accomplish the EVAC in Ocean Colony.

We will break into 8 teams: 7 neighborhood teams and 1 base. ?Each neighborhood team must have at least one walkie-talkie radio (WT) operator.? We will scour the neighborhood and check the occupancy of as many residents as we can in ONE HOUR.? We will then meet at the Rally Point to wrap up the Drill.

?

THE PLAN:

1.?????? On August 1 at 3:00PM, all radio-equipped participants will turn on their WTs.

2.? ? ? ?1.??To save time, teams will meet at their local neighborhood and begin their searches.

3.? ? ? ?2.??3 CERTs will establish a base at the Rally Point and monitor WT traffic.

4.? ? ? ?3.??Everyone meets at the Rally Point to conclude the Drill.

?

EVAC PROCEDURE:

1.? ? ? ?1.??Stand by the mailbox of a house for 1 to 3 minutes.? That¡¯s enough time to

2.? ? ? ?2.??Indicate the occupancy status of the house on the map provided:

a.?????? V = VACANT

b.?????? L = LEFT or in the process of LEAVING

c.?????? S = STAYING

3.? ? ? ?3.??Proceed to the next house.

4.? ? ? ?4.??Repeat Steps 1 to 3 until the Drill is done.

5.? ? ? ?5.??Submit the forms and maps to the OC CERT Lead at the Rally Point

The Team will be comprised on an OCEPT Captain and as many OCEPT volunteers from their neighborhood.? The time you spend in front of the house is arbitrary.? The occupancy status is also arbitrary.? You can assume that most of our residents have already left.? If you do find someone who is leaving or staying, write down the time, their name and address, and any useful notes on the CERT Form provided.? At the end of the Drill, the neighborhood team leads will submit their forms and maps to the base at the Rally Point.? At least one volunteer must be a WT operator.? Traffic from volunteers who have participated in the OC CERT Net will be monitored by Net Control.? CERT Form #4 will be used.? Each Captain must print out their CERT Form #4 and their map prior to the Drill.

?

RALLY POINT BASE:

We will need OC CERT volunteers to act as:

1.? ? ? ?1.??NL = Neighborhood Lead

2.? ? ? ?2.??Net Control for WT traffic

3.? ? ? ?3.??Net Scribe

Establish the Rally Point base as soon as possible with a canopy, a table, and a few chairs.? Net Control will initiate the Drill at 3:00PM. After the base is established, Net Control will solicit check-ins by neighborhoods.? Base personnel will direct the Drill and monitor all WT traffic.? For this Drill only, I have opted not to be aided by a simulated Disaster Operations Center (DOC) via ham radio.? All pertinent CERT and ICS Forms will be used to document the exercise. CERT Forms 2, 3, 4, and 6 will be used during the exercise.

Rich, please contact your Captains and relay any questions they may have here.??I have uploaded this document, the forms, and the maps in the groups.io Files folder.?

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE REPLY TO THIS POST.
