Sorry for the late response.
My condolences on your loss.? And yes, the last 3 years has been a real shit show.? Glad you're getting back to outreach.?
It's been a great line of work so far.? Great people.? Interesting jobs.? Gives me a greater appreciation for all the behind-the-scenes (and above-the-drop-ceiling) activity that keeps our world running.? Even got to work on the Best Buy transformer explosion in Barrhaven.? The force of the blast threw the transformer door clear across the parking lot, left an imprint on the building, and apparently knocked inventory off the rear warehouse shelves.? Holy crap!

Hey Tris! Sorry how it all worked out, but glad you landed on your feet as an electrician apprentice! Steady work…. As for myself, I have been retired for almost ten years! Unfortunately I lost my wife in December 2019. This was followed by Covid-19, so a general shit show! Looking forward to getting back to sidewalk outreach soon, and excited to attend Starfest in August!

It was a nice location, big open space.? Black walls, new flooring.? Only 15 minutes drive from my house, and almost a stone's throw from Diffraction Limited Inc.? The limited storage, and loud furnace/central air were the biggest points against it.? Unfortunately the location was more expensive to lease, and there were additional expenses, such as natural gas.? But we could have made it work, if only we were provided with the means to do so.? Supply chain woes was helpful, but not the reason for the downfall.
I'll tell you about it sometime.? The employees and I are absolutely shocked and depressed about it.

Back to the original topic: buying a scope by someone new to astronomy. A very clever, but new to astronomy, friend of mine came up with a new covid-approprate way of getting a scope. He ordered online from a canadian supplier with a very liberal return policy. He bought a small scope on sale. He immediately figured out it was crap (as is usually the case with lowest-priced retail telescopes) and returned it. Then he bought another ... and returned it. He is on his third telescope. He moved up from a $200 scope to a $1000 scope in a few weeks. He is now happy with his 8 inch schmidt. This story points out that it is very difficult for a person new to astronomy to buy a scope through the internet that they will actually like and the why the first choice is almost always not the best one choice. However, if you're willing to do multiple returns (and if the store allows such with free return shipping) it can work. But I still think it's better to rent a few scopes from a local astronomy before spending money. On Wed, Sep 29, 2021 at 3:52 PM Richard McDonald <ottawarichardmcdonald@...> wrote: Ok. Hi, I’m new to the group and in the Ottawa valley. Im wondering if anyone has suggestions for good places to purchase a telescope or if anyone were selling a used one. I think I’d like to get a dobsodian telescope so my little ones have a great experience looking at the night sky.
Thank you, cheers!
