Re: Recommendations for Observing Sites in Gatineau?

Keep in mind that Gatineau is currently under a 8pm curfew, and you'll be fined if you're caught outdoors after that time.

Re: April Fools?

Thanks Graeme, I enjoyed that video.

Good advertising for the Lennox and Addington dark sky site too. I'll be visiting Prince Edward County in August for a week with the family and will definitely plan to make a trip (or two) to the site. I'm so glad you mentioned it!

I just do visual astronomy at the moment and I'm new to the hobby. I picked it up as a "pandemic pass-time" and I am completely hooked/

Hopefully I'll run into some folks who are happy to share their knowledge and experience.

Someone looking to borrow a Star Sense in West End...

Hi All,

Mark Lord is a local astronomer (but not yet a member of RASCor OAFs, I'm working on him!), and he wants to try out some of the various HomeBrew / Open-Source telescope interfaces that are being developed. But to do so, he needs to borrow someone's Star Sense for a few days. I don't totally understand all the steps, so I'll let him explain:

It will be primarily be used indoors with my Evolution 8 scope, to observe/verify operation with SkyPortal and CPWI over Homebrew Wifi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet.? And then perhaps one outdoor run to double-check things under real stars,?although not really required. There is no danger to the unit -- the projects are more than mature enough at this point to guarantee that -- I just need to sort out the additional, special message protocols used by the accessory.

He can pick up in West Ottawa and outward, as he lives North of March Rd. between Dunrobin and Carp. His email, if you're willing to help him out, is Mark Lord <mlord@...>.

I'm interested by all the DIY / Home Brew solutions that are out there. If he gets everything going, maybe a future RASC presentation would be in order or an article for Astro Notes?

Hi Folks,

A big thanks to Richard for hosting us this evening. I am so glad that I passed on joining all my buddies down at the local bar tonight. It really was nice to see some familiar faces and hear some friendly voices.

Have a great day.

Re: Zoom chat

Sorry you missed it. But note that it is possible to phone into a zoom
chat to get at least the audio part (if you have free long distance).

Thanks to Richard M. for hosting the oafs zoom.

I suggest we bug him again in 31 days to have another one..

Celestron EVO 6 scope available locally

Hello RASC and OAFs,

One of our local astronomers has had to make the tough decision to let go of his scope due to his advancing age and health, and I'm helping facilitate a note to the group. He has one of the Celestron Evolution 6" SCT, along with a selection of three X-Cel eyepieces (1.25" x 9mm, 18mm, and 25mm). The scope was purchased brand new last June and has only been used lightly 2 or 3 times (one of which was me for a training session). The scope originally cost $1700 + the three eyepieces were $440 (including taxes). Given its almost new condition, they're asking $2000 for it all together with a pick-up in Kemptville.

For those of you not familiar with the Evolution series, this is a full go-to scope, but unlike the more basic SE series, the Evo models come with integrated WiFi, so no need for a dongle to connect to your phone or tablet,?and a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, promising 10h on a single charge. You can still plug in an external charger if you want more than that for a weekend outing. And unlike my portable lithium-ion battery, the Evo will let you charge a phone or tablet from its USB port while you're observing -- so your phone won't die either. The 6" is also the perfect size for mobility (I have the 8SE and find it just a tad large, I'd love a 6" myself for portability). The Evo also has better handles for carrying it, a fantastic tray that "rotates and folds a bit" so your tripod legs stay locked together. And for those who hate normal powered scopes? There are manual clutches in both Altitude and Azimuth so you can point the scope when powered off. Oh, and if you are wondering about clearance with the base because the SE series has challenges? The EVO has way more clearance to attach cameras, full diagonals, etc.

If you're interested, please contact Juliann Whitney at 613-869-2143.

Re: anyone want an OAFs Zoom chat?

A good point.? I trimmed the phone info out of the invite to keep it short, but there is voice-only dial-in info if anyone would like to do voice-only.? Unfortunately there is no local Ottawa number, but most Canadian cell phone plans have country-wide dialing now, so you could just call the Toronto number.? Those details are in the full invite, below.

(By the way, you can pay an add-on fee with Zoom and have a 1-800 number.? It's about $1000/year - I could set up a GoFundMe account... )
