Re: No Observing Tonite ( Saturday PM )

If it is clear I'm up for it, now if I could just find that multi
terawatt laser I had in the scrap pile....

BTW I am Pythonically challenged (in case you had not noticed)in terms
of being able to quote the old shows. But I make up for it with
Technology. Just check out the Files area in about 10 minutes.

the cloud forcasts for sunday night look reasonably good
with the best clearing early in the evening.

Could be a good night to get a little deepsky observing in.

Please post if people feel like organizing some communal
observing.

Re: Mar 15 Observing report

Matt Weeks

Hello Mike,

Thank you for inviting me to this place (OAFs). I am very glad to
see everyone is still very eager to star-gaze. I am one to sit in
the background and not take much forward action so I'm glad you
thought of me when deciding to go "public". About observing, it
would be very rare that I would be able to make it out to your place
on week nights, a fri or sat night would be best. But I will
contemplate each and every invitation though, you never know, I may
surprise you one week night! (Besides the more times I take you up
on your kind offers, the greater the chance I will get to meet
Terence eh!)

Now a BBQ and a Hitchhiker's or a Monty Python 'fest I would
definatly be in for!!! That would be awesome!

PS: I can't bring you a shrubbery, but I'll bring you the largest
tree in the forest, if I can find...........a herring!!!

oh no! I said IT, oh I said IT again............

Mike --

Ah-ha! You've stumbled upon our true identity!

"OAFs" is actually a false front for a secret society called "AMASOT",
bankrolled through a numbered Swiss bank account, and moderated by a
shifty guy who operates from our head office on the Caymen Islands. It
is equipped with a remote-controlled observatory so all us poor
schlumps up north here can catch an occasional glimpse of
the nebulosity in the Southern Cross region. (I wish!)

Ah. Thats my fault. This email list was previously called amasot (AMatuer

I forgot to change the welcome messages. I will do that now.

Sorry about the the confusion. And welcome fellow OAF.

Re: Anything "Green" Up There?!?

Attilla Danko

Stars, because they are effectively backbody radiators, would be shades of
pink yellow and blue, but never green. Thats becaue if a body is hot enough to emit at 500nm
(green) it will also be emitting lots at 600nm (red) which would make it yellow.
To glow green they'd have to be out of thermal equilibrium.

A cold body could be green too, buy reflectance spectrum. Hmm. The onely green
cold stuff I rememver seeing is probably the blue-green festoons on Jupiter.

That leaves emission nebulae. They can glow at individual spectral lines (a very
non-thermal process) and there are tons of then that emit at the OIII line.

But you'd need a really bright one to percieve as green. So I think observing
M42 with a 16 inch or larger aperture is the best bet.

How anyowe know any chartreuse objects to observe?

Observing?!? I'm IN!

Hi Richard!

Observing!?! I'm in! Between Carp Airport and FLO, the latter would
be the darker of the two sites ( by 0.5 to 1.0 magnitudes). We'd need
to check road conditions for their entrance. ALso, if other dark site
options become available, let me know, and we'll adapt.

My Main Targets:

Hubble's Variable Nebula.
Thor's Hammer, but with OIII filter.
Tons of Virgo Galaxies, of course.

Time to hit the Photon Trail, Buckaroos!!

Nice report.

From: Matt Weeks <mweeks@...>
3) NGC 2438: Planetary Nebula in M46.
Yup, this is one of the coolest sights in the sky. I really enjoy such object
pairing.

Some other cools double views are:

- M35 and NGC2158
- M15 and Pease1
- M57 and IC1296
- M13 and NGC6702
- M96 and M95

The all time classic is probably M81 and M82.

Clear skies and double vision.

I ABSOLUTELY must go observing tonight!!! It looks like tonight will be better than last night (crummy!). I am leaning towards either the Carp site (never been) or the FLO. Any other suggestions Starry Knights?
