Bon Voyage to the "Texas Star Party" goers!
I think a couple of OAFs are leaving on a long van trek to Texas in
the morning. Another two are leaving the next morning. Probably fairly busy packing. They know who they are... ;-) BON VOYAGE, all of you... Have a great time... And the clearest most pristine of dark Texas skies for you!! Rol |
Re: Observing Report, April 20
Matt,
Just found this group. Thanks for the excellent report. This was my first trip to a dark site with my Orion XT8 and I must say it won't be my last (metropolitan barrhaven skies are a little more light polluted). I have to say I really appreciated the help everyone offered, I expanded my Messier List targets from 12 to about 20 that night alone. Albert Saikaley was the C11 owner - he convinced me to leave my suburban backyard and venture out into the real world. Looking forward to seeing you all again! Jim Hayko |
Re: Movie tonight
Mike and Attilla: It was a lot of fun last night and the movie is definitely worth seeing. Given a choice between it and TSP, however, I'm pretty sure which I would choose. Hope all going south have a great time and send us some reports so we can be green with envy.

weeks/months. Perhaps we can organise another dinner and show then, on a night when I can go 8^) And who's green with envy - going to a hot and dusty place like Texas, with dark skies, big scopes, lots of astro buddies, southern skies. I'm going to stay in Ottawa and go to work, watch the rain, dream about my 8"er! What could be better? Rick -----Original Message-----

Five of us: Al & Marie, Frank, Janice & I, had a fun dinner Movenpick at the Rideau centre. Movie has much good quirky humour, and yet manages to keep you interested all the way through. Sorry you missed it, Mike and Attilla, but it is to be expected that the preparation for the TSP might be fairly daunting. Hopefully, the movie will eventually come out on video and you'll catch it then. It's worth it. Good luck with trip preparations for the TSP, land of the BIG PHOTONS, Y'all! Roland |

Movie tonight
Now that the site is up and running again, here is some info. for
anyone who wants to see "The Dish." Most of the votes were for tongiht, so tonight it shall be. The early show is at 7:15 at the Rideau Centre. Anyone who wants to join some of us for a quick dinner is welcome to come to the Movenpick rest. which is on the lower level of the Rideau Ctr. near the east entrance. I suggest meeting at the theatre at 7 p.m and for those interested, meeting at the rest. at 6. It's an informal kind of place with a pretty wide variety of options for dinner or just a snack and no reservation would be needed. Looking forward to some photons in a different form! Frank |
Re: Poll Quirks
Yes, I noticed that quirk. I think the poll is showing an extra vote when someone votes for the early or late show. So far, Tuesday seems to be the preferred day. Will close the poll tonight and make a decision then. Re Al Seaman's suggestion for an early dinner, I could suggest the Movenpick in the Rideau Ctr an a very close and easy to find place, but all other suggestions are welcome. Till later...

Tuesday or Thursday are equally good for me. Voted for both, but from the results tallied, it seems like the system counts only the first day voted. Anyway, it's good that we have this started and can get a night pinned down for this week. It is not at all clear that it will be on anywhere next week. But that is the way of movies - if it's not from Hollywood it's gone quick, even though it may be better that most Hollywood productions. A further thought - show times are 7:15 and 9:40 - anyone interested in a quick early dinner somewhere close before the first show? And if clear, maybe some city centre sidewalk astronomy after the show? Cheers - Al Cheers - Al |
Mini Observing Report
May 6/01 Short Tube 80 f/5 20:30-22:00
Dunning-Foubert School lm=6 clear/calm On the spur of the moment, Roland & I decided to set up the Vista 508 on a small hillock in a nearby school yard. The slight elevation was sufficient to give us a clear view of the western horizon. We managed to spot Jupiter in the early twilight. About 10 minutes later, I noticed a second dot of light near to where I expected to find Saturn. However, viewing the object at 80X showed no rings - aha, Mercury! Saturn remained invisible to the naked eye, but a sweep around Mercury with the 26mm eyepiece revealed a yellow "star" nearby which, when magnified, revealed a planetary ring (exactly where described in the OAFs Event posting). Jupiter - best viewed with 10mm in 2X barlow. Nice crisp disk, two moons on each side, two main bands visible. Saturn - this beauty is, unfortunately, rapidly fading into the sunset. The rings were still visible, but the planet disappeared all too quickly into the western horizon. Mercury - at less than 15 degrees alt, Mercury showed a lot of flaring and chromatic fluctuation in the small refractor. However, Roland added an orange filter, which calmed the image down into a stable disk. To me it looked round, but Roland could see it as slightly oval when the seeing got calm. Moon - We almost never look at the full moon in a telescope (except for a two-second peek to centre it in the eyepiece at sidewalk sessions)-- too bad, because it's actually quite a lovely view. 26mm eyepiece with a 2X barlow shows best. While looking at the moon, Roland saw a bird fly across its face. Minutes later, I saw one as well! By the end of the short session we had each seen three of them - black silhouettes against the moon's silver light. Over the past few months, Roland & I have been wondering if we should take up bird watching with the Short Tube. Tonight, we got a two-for-one deal - bird watching against the backdrop of a near-full moon! (Two, Two Scopes in One!) Four teen-agers stopped by for a view of the Moon & Jupiter. A round of enthusiastic "cool's"! Cool! Janice |

There is a new poll posted on possible movie night.Monday, Rob Robotham is sure to be unavailable. I'm not sure if he'd like to attend or not, but it'd be good to keep that option open for him. Some people are leaving early on Thursday am for the TSP, if I recall correctly, and so might be packing furiously on Wednesday pm. So... therefore... if not Monday and also if not Wednesday or past it... H-m-m-m... that seems to leave Tuesday (probably pm) as a clear choice, at least from this point of vantage. I voted Tuesday, for now. Muchos Gratias, Frank! Rol |

Possible movie night
As I mentioned to Mike Friday night, that Australian movie he was on
the lookout for ("The Dish") is now on at the Rideau Centre. Is anyone interested in getting together this week for a viewing? A friend of mine saw it yesterday and highly recommends it but says it will only be there for one week. I probably should organize a poll, but am not sure that is witihn my technical capabilities -- though I might give it it a try... Frank |

Conditions (even for sidewalk) are far from ideal, with the moon 48 hours from full, and Jupiter less than 25 degrees from the horizon around dusk (last gasp?). However, the sky is very blue right now, so... we were just wondering if anyone might be interested in a sidewalk session in Kanata this evening? Nothing fancy - just hang around, show the moon at various magnifications, and maybe a touch of Jupiter if we're lucky. We'll check postings round 5pm to see if anyone else might be interested.
