Re: Shadow Transit

After seeing Oscar's results I less confident it's IFN and perhaps a stacking artifact.

Re: Shadow Transit

Hey Greg,

I shot that one through an 11" EdgeHD, reduced 0.7x to ~1970mm. Bortle 4 skies, ~40h of integration.

Hi Oscar,?

I'm embarrassed for posting my image after seeing yours, wow!. Do you mind sharing the focal length, total integration time and your bortle zone?.? I couldn't pull any detail out of small galaxies when integrating 12 hours of good subframes from my downtown Ottawa back yard.

I have been working on a theory that long focal lengths are not that important.? My shot was taking with a 140mm APO reduced down to 590mm.? The image scale is 1.31 arc second per pixel which is limited by seeing in theory a longer focal length scope would be limited by seeing and over sampled.??

I'm curious if my theory is incorrect and my edge HD 8 will pull out better detail, you have darker skies, longer integration, better processing (I'm still a pixinsight newbie).

Thanks,
Greg

Interestingly, I observed the two dark "barges" that seem to be clinging to the southern edge of the NEB in your shot.? The seeing was good enough for me to track the first shadow all the way to the limb, only loosing sight of it moments before the forecasted disappearance time.? This is when I knew I was going to remain primarily a visual observer.? For a moment I thought that I should set up the camera as the view was great, but then I told myself the seeing was too good to be wasting observing time mucking-about with a camera. Ha!

You're getting the same detail I am able to get with a C8 and dedicated planetary camera.?
Thanks Greg, that's nice to hear.? I suspect the planetary camera benefits will rapidly reveal themselves with other planets.? I suspect a proper planetary camera will quickly leave my DSLR in the dust with Mars and Saturn.? My camera can capture 1:1 and in Raw, which is nice. But I'm locked at 30 FPS.? The down side, of course, is that if I want to improve the SnR I have no choice but the take longer videos, I can't just shorten the exposure.? All exposure is good for for me is to freeze seeing (not sure if that's even a thing, really) or more importantly to be as slow as I can go before ruining most of the frames due to vibrations resulting from the busses passing down the road in front of me (damn leda clay!).

Still, it has been a fun experiment.? I enjoy it, but I'm not sure enough to spend a bunch more money on it.? The only other thing I may try, is to get my hands on a 2x barlow, instead of the 1.6x I'm currently using.? That would allow me to operate closer the f/ratio=> 5x the pixel size guideline for sampling.?

We will wait and see.? I think I'd rather put that cash towards more aperture to be honest.

Matt

Which calculator is the best.? I want to see one of these visually.

I simply use the RASC Observer's Handbook.? There are a couple nights to try shortly: Nov 8/9 starts @ 9:25 (Io), Nov 9/10 starts @ 8:06 (Europa).

Re: Shadow Transit

Here’s one I took recently of the Deer Lick and quintet also. It’s a fun target.

Since you guys are showing off your images I'm going to share my latest DSO pictures. The image of Stephan's Quintet is the first time I've captured interstellar flux neubula.

Just a quick share from 2022-Oct-3 -- my second night out trying to get Jupiter while it's relatively close (and my second night ever trying planetary).?
The seeing was pretty good that night -- hasn't quite been that good since from here in Manotick anyway.

Since then I've tried several more times with mixed (i.e. not much) success.?
8" SCT, ZWO-ASI462, AutoStakkert!3, Registax, a bit of a saturation boost in Paint Shop Pro.
The full animation is quite a bit longer but I struggled with focus -- so much of it is quite blurry.

Nice one Matt reminds me of one of the first sketches I did of Jupiter mid 70s.
However your shot is light years better.

Ps welcome back to the area.
