Re: What would you prefer?

Matt, Roland and Mike:

I think we have a plan! 8-)

Mike: Thanks very much for the invitation - I'll take you up on it. Let's
hope the weather cooperates. Now, as for directions to your place, are the
two maps on the other Yahoo egroup, still the best references? When would
you like us to arrive?

See you all tonight ...

Roland, Mike and Bruce,

I would be happy to head out to Mike's place tonight (thanks very
much Mike!!). It is rare that I can get the right conditions (mainly
weekend nights where I don't have to work in the morning!) to allow
for the trip. I just LOVE the view through your two excellent time
machines!

Bruce, when I have been out to Mikes place in the past, there were
usually at least a couple of smaller scopes of other friends set up
inside the observatory. You, owning a new scope and all, would
probably want to use your own for the most part. Am I right? If Mike
still allows it, you could set your scope up in the Observatory, that
way you could use your own scope and get a look through the big
guys. I usually bring my scope but don't set it up (the word usually
means "the two times I have been there before", in this sentance :))
So if you want to borrow anything,(star charts, eyepieces, etc..) you
can. I would also like to run a little experiment using an 8in SCT
to finally decide on the purchase of a nebula filter . Hopefully
someone may have a nebula filter handy for this, nudge, nudge, wink,
wink. ;-).

I'll keep wtching,

Matt

Mike Wirths' observatory has very dark skies and superb scopes.
It's
a bit farther out but, hey, so's the view you can see in those

Plus Mike's such excellent company (sorry Mike, no blushing, it's
just true). Also, if the winds are medium (20km/h say), it might
be
tough at FLO, but fine in Mike's observatory. I'd be happy to take
up
Mike on his kind invitation, especially if you guys don't mind

If, on the other hand, neither of you can go that far (approx 1.25

Let me know either way soon, OK? ;-)

Hello all!

It seems that the consensus is to head out to Mikes captivating
celestial cabin! Excellent!

Mike maybe you could post a go, no-go since the weather can be very
different in Perth then it is in Ottawa? The sat maps seem to
indicate the farther south we will be the better the chances are of
good weather.

Oh, decisions, decisions. 8-(

I'm tempted to go to Perth, but if that's too far for you, Matt, I'm
perfectly content to stick to our plans to go to FLO tonight, to show you
the site. I'm sure once you've seen it, you'll find it far better than
Carp, and worth the extra drive.

On the other hand, from what I've heard of Mike's place, we'd be fools to
turn down the invitation.

What do you prefer, Matt?

Re: Observing tonight

So many choices, I'll have to check back later to see what the
go/no-go status is (and where people are planning to go). Personally
I wouldn't want to leave poor Mike outnumbered by his telescopes. By
the time I got home yesterday it was all clouded over (and there were
no further comments on going observing) and even by 10 PM it was still
more clouds than clear (and they were moving pretty quick). And I
didn't check here either (until more like 11 PM) - guess I should
have. :-(

Hope to see everyone tonight.

Clear skies and calm air,

Rob

Hey ERoland,

FLO sounds great! But I am willing to go anywhere, so if you decide
you want to stay closer to home I will join you where ever you decide
to go. Unless another plan pops up I will plan for FLO tonight with
you (and anyone else). I can post a go or no-go as soon as I notice
the forcasted clear weather start to roll in or around 6 pm, which
ever comes first. Please note that I have never been to FLO before
and I do not have the combo for the lock. I am unsure of the amount
of time it will take me to get to FLo, but I presume it is only about
20 mins from carp, so that makes it about a 30 min drive for me. I
would plan on leaving home around 7:30 to arrive around 8. My plan
for the night is to recharge my internal photon battery, which has
been severly depleted over the last month, continue on my quest to
complete the RASC finest NGC list, and, of course, to have fun!:)

I'll check back soon!

I had never been to FLO before, and it was certainly a revelation to see
dark skies, despite the poor conditions. The peeks in the 16" were great -
things to shoot for later on, just as I was doing with M3, which Matt Weeks
showed me during the winter.

Can't wait for next time.

Sess#288 9:15-12:00pm FLO lm=6.1 s=3/10 var clouds+fog

It was 100% cloudy in Orleans when Attilla posted what I thought was
the rhetorical question: "is anyone observing tonight?" Anyway, in
spite of appearances, Bruce, Attilla and myself had an observing
session at the Fred Lossing Observatory. We were the only three
there that evening.

Sky cleared overhead as we got to Almonte. Bruce set up his still
fairly new (1 month) SCT-8" on his excellent Losmandy mount. Attilla
suggested we maybe use the observatory's 16" scope, so I focused on
that instead of setting up my own. There was some ground fog to look
through, a seeing of 3/10 max. and bouts of cloud cover, so conditions
were not ideal. Here are some of the targets we looked at (in no
order):

NGC4565 - beautiful spindle galaxy showing just a hint of dark lane
M3 - Bruce's view was good and quite bright
M101 - large and relatively non-structured
M51 - hints of spiral
Sombrero - hints of lane only. Nucleus bright.
Castor - ( sep 3.9" binary ) barely split in the 8"- very poor seeing
Gamma Leonis - same as Castor
Jupiter - much churning, low in the sky by the time we'd started.
Mizar - in 8"

Then, all in the same field of view, these eight galaxies:
M84, M86, & NGCs 4388, 4387, 4402, 4425, 4435, 4438

Things got covered over at 12pm, and Bruce's corrector plate got dewed
up completely, in spite of my lending him a dewcap and Kendrick
heaters set for 6/10 heat. Very rare indeed to have this happen.
The cause was that his scope was aimed nearly at Zenith and left there
for 30 minutes while it stood practically in ground fog. Also notable
was Attilla's green laser which was much more "Skywalker" than usual.
;-)

We tore down at midnight and Attilla made an entry in the FLO logbook.
We stopped at Denny's in Kanata on the way home and chatted over
"breakfast" for about an hour. It was fun, amigos.

PS - Hwy#44 is also called Hwy#49 and this can lead to confusion.

Actually, thanks to the Harris cut-backs, the former Provincial Highway 44
is now Regional Road 49 and County Road 49 (depending on where you are on
it).

For those that need it, here are some up-to-date directions to FLO:

Descriptive Directions - Ottawa to FLO
------------------------------------------------------------------------

* If coming from Ottawa, head west on the Queensway (Highway 417),
and note odometer reading as you pass the Corel Centre at
Exit #142.

* Go 2.8 km past the Corel Centre to Exit #145 for Highway 7 (but
don't take it), and continue straight in the direction of Highway
417 to Arnprior.

* Go 8.7 km further to Exit 155 for March Road and Almonte, and exit
from 417.

* Go 0.7 km up the exit ramp to T junction at March Road (Regional
Road 49), and turn left towards Almonte.

* Go 12.8 km to the entrance to Almonte at Appleton Road and continue
straight through. A first traffic light is a short distance beyond
this point.

* Go 1.4 km along Ottawa Street to the next traffic lights at Martin
Street, and go straight through.

* Continue for a further 1.4 km through Almonte. The road wiggles a
bit and changes its name from Ottawa St., to Main St., to Almonte
St.

* At the next traffic lights at the junction with County Road 15 (a
PetroCanada Station is on your right), turn to the right and take
County Road 15 towards Arnprior.

* Go 3.2 km to the Clayton Road and turn left. There are also Mill of
Kintail signs that mark this turn.

* Go 1.3 km to Concession 8 and turn right. Again follow the Mill of
Kintail signs.

* Go past the Mill of Kintail and over the Indian River bridge which
is 2.0 km from the Clayton Road.

* Continue past the bridge for 0.8 km to a junction at the Bennies
Corner Road.

* Turn right and go 0.2 km, and the gate should be on your right.
There is a sign that reads simply "FLO".

Note: There is an alternate route from Almonte:

* Go into Almonte as far as the second traffic light (Martin Street)
and turn right.

* Go to the village of Blakeney, and turn left at the T junction.

* Go over the Mississippi River bridge, across County Road 15, and
continue on Bennies Corners Road until the gate is on your left.

Re: FLO a GO - Thursday pm!

It's Janice here, at 9 pm. Just got a call from Roland, who is at the
Petrocan in Almonte.

He reports that the skies are clear from horizon to horizon, with a
bit of ground haze that is dissipating. As soon as Bruce arrives at
the Petrocan, they'll be heading out to FLO for some long-overdue
observing!

Clear skies...west of Ottawa!
