Will do shortly just as soon as I can verify that Jupiter and Saturn will
not be obstructed when viewed from Library parking lot.

Was going to do that last night, but of course everything was blanked out
by clouds. But I will do some daytime compass measurements to confirm.

I checked both the Bytown and Mayfair and neither has it on within the next
month or so. But they are both places I would expect to show it at some
point.

Hi,

snip

BTW, Al and those that like the sounds of the Dish movie, its not at any
theatres that I looked up ...yet but it may show up soon so stay tuned!

Clear at this second...

I don't know how long it will last, but right now (19:40) it is clear
here (I can see clouds in the west, but not to the east - oops, just
took a look there are a couple to the east (and I can't see as far
that way - there may be more). If anyone out there feels lucky give
me a call (521-5139), otherwise if things remain clear I might just
set up in the driveway (the backyard is still a swamp).

Here's hoping the skies stay (get) clear.

Rob

P.S. If someone has an authoritative reason for being optimistic, I'll
consider Perth, but since it's already been called off once...

Yeah, looks bad now in Ottawa as well, and the weather maps don't show
clearing until later in the night. Oh well! Hopefully an Almonte
session tomorrow PM might have more luck.

Not yet. Mike, if you do, maybe post a micro report, to whet our
appetites for the coming few months? I just love to read observing
reports. On second thought, you're probably working way too hard
right now to be posting reports. Enjoy the view, Mike!

Good observing!

Perth tonight

Mike Wirths

Hi,

Well unfortunately its completely clouded over here and by the looks of the sat pics its not going to get better anytime soon, they say clearing after midnight, but that does'nt help us! So I'd have to say sadly that for tonight its a no-go ;(
But I'd like to come out to Almonte tommorrow if its nice!

helpful.
The library is best from the point of view of capturing evening visitors,
but the western horizon is a bit obstructed. I will have to do a bit
further scouting to see if it is still OK for the planets, and if not
find a suitable alternate location.

Also, if it's a "GO", you maybe might want to post a few more
directions, for us Almonte neophytes.
Will certainly provide more details as soon as time and location is
firm. Fortunately, Almonte is not that complicated once you get
to the town.

What do you mean "almost"?! You other OAFs should'a seen this guy
approach me with his 31mm termi-Nagler eyepiece and that casual,
cheerful, evil glint in his eye. "Give it a try... just one look,
Roland... what can it hurt?" Worse than a snake in an apple tree.
"*Almost*" indeed! I should sue... ;-)

And if the weather forecast is right (i.e. bad) then I always have
Burnham's to read :-).
Yeah, I've had Burnham's for a couple of years now. Very poetic stuff
and still quite interesting. The stellar data is a bit off in some
cases due to the epoch, but much of the info on galaxies, nebulas,
etc. is just as valid. Also, I find some of the lore interesting as
well.

Until (hopefully) later this week,

Rol

Hi Al!

I'm free this week, so I could also join you tomorrow (Tues.) with my
SCT-8", for some sidewalk astronomy in Almonte, if the weather holds
out ok. I think you said you'd set yourself up at the public library

Good luck all,

For me the start of the week isn't great (Tuesday is right out), but
I will try and make it out Saturday to help with the Cadets at Mike's
(and I will bring the forbidden fruit eyepiece that Roland has mentioned
to me a few times - I *almost* feel guilty for having let him look
through it once...). If the weather cooperates, naturally. And if the
weather forecast is wrong for later on in the week, Thursday and Friday
have potential for me. And if the weather forecast is right (i.e. bad)
then I always have Burnham's to read :-).

If Mike calls a "GO" for tonight, I will be accompanying Roland for
a sidewalk session under the Lanark County skies in Perth.

Hope to see some of you there!

Sidewalk Astronomy in Perth

Mike Wirths

Hi everyone!

Just got off the phone with Roland and we though perhaps tonight might be one of the better looking nights for some sidewalk observing here in Perth. There are some ominous clouds to the north but I would give a go, no -go around 6:00 depending on how it looks. The location will be the Perth mall (there is only one!) on Hwy 7, its actually afew 100 feet furthur west on hwy 7 on the left past the left turn that you would normally take to go to my observatory (wilson st.). I will set up near the middle of the lot towards the Independent grocer store-- look for a large red crew cab Ford truck--thats where I will be.
So lets hope for clear skies!

Awesome moon last night

Last night (Sunday) I happened to take the dog out at 9:00 and I just
lucked into a really nice view of the moon. It was quite low in the
sky (something like 5 degrees) and almost full so it looked HUGE, and
it hit a break in the clouds just when I got out. What was really
neat (I can't believe I'm saying good things about clouds...) was the
clouds lit from underneath. Quite impressive (I'm sure Roland would
have preferred fewer clouds, but we have to enjoy what we get...). It
was pure luck that I was out, and walking the right direction when the
moon hit the gap.

Clear skies (though the occasional cloud is permitted if it provides a
really cool effect),
Rob

Another example of what you can see by just "looking up!!" There's always something going on. Since I have been involved with this hobby, I have begun to appreciate the cloud formations more, and the various moon/sun effects. Sometimes (like last night)it can be downright gorgeous with the moon seeming to separate the various cloud structures. It is stunning!! It is especially nice when you don't have a scope out!! ;o)

Cadets on Saturday night.....

Mike,

I have a confirmed 12 cadets and 4 adults who will attend on Saturday
night.
The final call is , of course, yours to make...but should the weather
be iffy, could you let me know via cell ( 265-2355) by 4:30 or so, so
that I may in turn inform the people on my list....??

The plan is to leave Ottawa around 6:30pm and leave your place around
10:00~11:00 or so....

Let me know,

Jean
