Re: This listserve can be read by anyone - at least that's what it seems settings say

Hi Linda and Marilyn,

Linda, it sounds like you're receiving emails the way we all receive them when someone creates a post in the OAEF io groups list serve.

Some mentioned a program where teens or young adults buddy up to help folks learn more about technology - but I don't recall what it was. Could you participate in this program?

Marilyn, at San Mateo Adult and Career Education, there are many classes to help folks learn tech skills. They are not marketed to older adults, per se, but older adults are definitely amongst the learners.?

The school is located not far from Caltrain. Marilyn, you could drive or take Caltrain to the Adult School - maybe a once a week class??

The Google Basics class is free. Jeanne Dimon is the teacher. I know her. She is extremely kind and patient.

Here is a link to the computer classes at San Mateo Adult and Career Education:

Article on the value of Adult Education - and some ideas on getting more coverage

Recently, there have been a number of articles about Adult Ed -- leading up to the EdSource RoundTable yesterday.
?
They don't mention Older Adults specifically - but they discuss Adult Ed - which very much needs the coverage.
?
Here's a link one of the articles:
?
?
It's important to get this kind of coverage.?
?
And it would be very helpful if there were an article written specifically about Older Adults.
?
Years back, Nannette Asimov of the SF Chronicle covered cuts to OA classes at CCSF. She is still with the Chronicle. If some of the CCSF folks have a connection to her, it might be worth a reach out.
?
Note:? she only covered OA as part of CCSF. She didn't explain the big picture - overall cuts to Adult Ed in wake of housing crash.
?
I think coverage needs to showcase the big picture. OA classes in K12 Adult Ed was COMPLETELY defunded - and in some Com College systems (not all), OA does not have the support it needs - and across the board - state wide - we need more attention and funding for these classes.?
?
Creating bulletpoint one sheets and infographics would be a helpful handoff to journalists to get the coverage we need.

OAEF meeting today

Hi everyone,??

An agenda for today's meeting of Older Adults Education Forever is attached to this email.? Please feel free to suggest changes.

Here is the information about today's meeting:

Meeting of July 14, 2024?

West County Meeting:? 1:30-2;00 PM
General Meeting: 2:00-4:00 PM

Both meetings will use this link:

Meeting ID: 836 3655 5477

Passcode: 576387

A note about the time:

Yesterday a member reminded me that this meeting was scheduled earlier than usual, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.? I actually had that on my calendar, but thought it was a mistake, so I sent a notice for the usual time, 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

I didn't hear from anyone else about the time difference, so, in hopes of avoiding as much confusion as possible, let's keep the meeting at the old time 2:00 to 4:00 PM.? Maybe we could try to end the meeting a little earlier than usual.

I truly apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

Kristen

Adult education: Overlooked and underfunded

July 25 at 2 p.m.

Adult education classes offer a lifeline for Californians who want to get their GED, acquire training for a career, hone their English skills or study for their citizenship test.

These classes can dramatically improve the quality of life for adults ¡ª and their children. But funding for this work is precarious, and adult education is often one of the first areas targeted for cuts in tight budget times.

As the state grapples with tighter budgets, join EdSource¡¯s Emma Gallegos and Zaidee Stavely in conversation with a panel of experts about the unique potential of adult education and what lies ahead.

NOTE: If you are unable to attend the live roundtable, you can still register and we will send you the recording the following day.

Speakers

  • Kathy Locke, ESL family literacy teacher, Oakland Unified

  • Steve Curiel, principal, Huntington Beach Adult School

  • John Werner, executive director, Sequoias Adult Education Consortium

More speakers to be announced soon.

MONTHLY SPEAKER MEETING ¡ª all welcome

this Wednesday, June 26, 2024? 1:30 to 3:30 pm

The June East Bay Gray Panthers Speaker Meeting!

Purely virtual - from your home via Zoom.

THE LONG-TERM HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS ON LIFE SUPPORT.? MORE THAN TWO MILLION CASES OF ELDER ABUSE AND NEGLECT ARE REPORTED EVERY YEAR. ??I am just one of the millions who had absolutely no ?idea how broken and corrupt the nursing home system truly is until I attempted to navigate it. ?
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??-- Susie Singer Carter, filmmaker
Join Gray Panthers of Berkeley and the East Bay, this?Wednesday, June 26 at 1:30pm for our monthly Speaker Meeting. Member Nancy Stevens and Hollywood filmmaker, Susie Singer Carter will share their first hand experiences and activism in the ongoing nursing home crisis. It's free and all are welcome!? RSVP below to get the link.
Nancy Stevens inspires many of us with her intense commitment to challenge and change the long-term care nursing where she lives in southern?California, and by her networking and advocacy?with Gray Panthers and change agents around the country. Nancy will update us on California and Congressional legislative campaigns and a new initiative called "" (Evaluating Innovation in Nursing Homes to End Instiutionalization) from the , bringing together longtime creative?visionaries in the field of long-term care.?
Nancy will interview?one of her own inspirations,?Hollywood actress and filmmaker, ?(video link). Here's what Carter?writes about her soon-to-be-released documentary?:

No Country for Old People is a feature length documentary that pulls the curtain back on the nursing? home/long-term care industry to reveal a decades-old systemic crisis that has been enabled by the nation¡¯s pervasive ageism & ableism.

For over 50 years, care for our most vulnerable has stealthily turned into a cutthroat world of private? equity and real estate investment trust-backed nursing homes. To put it bluntly: follow the money. There?is a lot.

No Country for Old People chronicles the last harrowing 6 months of my mother¡¯s life in a 5-star nursing? home in Los Angeles in 2022 and features powerful testimonials from caregivers, residents, and frontline providers [and] illuminating interviews from the most respected experts on Medicare, Medicaid,? Hospice ... to understand where, why, how these abuses happen, and what can be done.??Unfortunately, my experience is not at all unique. I am just one of the millions who had absolutely no? idea how broken and corrupt the nursing home system truly is until I attempted to navigate it.

Thanks for coming out this Wednesday; RSVP below. Look for summer socials, more speakers, and follow-up?on the Social Housing Movement. Keep in touch!??
